I wouldn't say "Ottoman Sephardic Jewish descent" (and neither does Wikipedia actually, this is a slip on your part). Thessaloniki was under Ottoman rule at the time his ancestors left the place, but his origins are 100% European&Jewish, not one bit Turkish (thank God for that).
