I seethe individualism thrown around alot but everyone dresses, acts, and sounds the same. They all say the same shit. They bitch about religion and call people sheep but they are the same thing. They all came together against religion, and are for Satanism. Your anti-religion is the same thing. You all come together with an ideology and belief and support it. Who are the sheep now?
as a black metal musician here in Norway, I only listen to and attempt to create older black metal. 80's and 90's black metal was true black metal. Now, it just doesnt seem the same. I believe it is the high quailty of the music, but that is not black metal. Black metal was not created for "musicians" aiming to earn millions of dollars. To be honest that makes me sick to think that some "musicians" are concentrating on makeing money instead of music and the message behind music.
The thing I love about Black Metal is it helps release all of your emotions. Thats why these people act so extreme, because they can express there REAL emotions through the music. No acting, no bullshit. Of course now, it is a business, and you do have to make money if you want to continue playing your music.
if black metal is your interest than follow it if punk is your preference than follow that but most of all be yourself in whatever your interest are.if you don't like a type of music don't listen to it but don't down it either.
You do understand just what Ihsahn mean in what he says, when you acctually grew up in Notodden. It is a perfect for rebellion against the perfect Norwegian society
there is an interesting 'tension' occuring in black metal. Sometimes bands claim it's really all about the music, while others claim the music is just one component of the general lifestyle, yet this lifestyle is always vaguely defined and ultimately meaningless.
Truth be told, black metal, like most metal, cannot separate itself from the genre's roots in rock theatricality. Because of this, there is always going to a strong 'poser' element to metal, no matter how much bands try to avoid it.
Fenriz is right, black metal is just a business nowadays. Metal in general is a business, but for some reason, a lot of the fans think it's amazingly different from the commercial music world. That is not to say that some label owners and cultural producers within the field have admirable intentions, but overall, metal is very corporate now, even on a so called independent level.
the metal audience is gullible, yet they treat others like sheep. strange behaviour.
I think you have very preconceived ideas about metalheads. Just because black metal has ideals doesn't mean they see the world in terms of black and white as you seem to do. And "metal" is too wide a term to use in the context like you did. You also took Fenriz's statement out of context and didn't offer a single example for any of your arguments. Oh, and you have some really shitty music in your favorites. Have a nice day.
@lamentate07 EVERYTHING is a business. If it can be sold for cash, it can be made into a fucking business. the difference between metal and commercialized pop/rock/hip hop bullshit is that metal has the most dedicated fans i have ever seen. metal bands do it the way they want to and don't care if people like their music or not. and if you notice, there's never a "popular" metal subgenre that every metalhead listens to for a while and then throws out when it goes out of style.
@lamentate07 Really? I think you are confusing making money vs making easy money. They work extremely hard, mainstream or not, to make it successful. That doesn't mean the music and expression isn't real. If I take what you said for truth, then life itself is just about business and is not worth living.
Probably they weren't accepted in this documentary cause of their extreme thoughts, i donno bout Immortal but Burzum is totaly deleted cause of what Varg did, and what he still does, his nazism etc.
"thats such a stupid comment, punk is totally about individualism, its a collective celebration of individualism. The guy has no clue what hes on about "
I think he do know what he is talking about ;) And How i a collective celebration of individualism individual?
One thing I get from Darkthrone's comments is that anyone who 'follows' BM in the slightest or shares the slightest ideals is somewhat of a 'poser' for lack of a better term.
Now I share a lot of ideals that these people do, and I've had them far before I even started listening to this kind of music ('mainstrem' or not). The only thing keeping me from being in a band is me sucking at anything instrumental, but I would have 'appeared' BM despite that.
any genre of music isn't about individualism. it's about getting the group of people whom share a similar interest together. that's why people who are at concerts act alike. so music isn't in any way about individualism.
thats such a stupid comment, punk is totally about individualism, its a collective celebration of individualism. The guy has no clue what hes on about
And how is punk a "collective celebration of individualism"? Any subgenre that has a dress code (including BM) is obviously not about individualism. Individualism is as much as an illusion as democracy is... just stop pretending already. If you're into metal you'll follow its dress code, you'll listen to the albums that are considered classic, etc. How's that individual? Is your concept of individualism "look I've got a yellow tie instead of a blue one" maybe? Individualism is bullshit.
ChristAlmightyAnal, Punk is more an attitude than genre of music. In its purest form, punk does not prescribe what to wear or what kind of music to make. Thats why punk has such a diverse sound, from the heaviness of hardcore punk like Black Flag and Sick of it all to the reggae influenced ska punk, then theres crusty punk influenced by death metal then theres pop punk (as bad as it is). Punk is totally about individualism. I dont mean bands like good charlotte, I mean proper punk bands.
Yeah interesting dude but the same goes for every genre. Death metal has technical bands, melodic bands, etc. Black metal has raw, epic, etc. Techno has mellow, hardcore, etc. Christianity has catholics, protestants, etc. Your argument is flawed. Individualism is only expressed through character. We are not what we want to be, we are just what we are. Trust me: the world does not see you as you'd like to see yourself and it never will. So much for your individualism... lol
@Grimeyhoob Punk is shit, Punk is pure fucking bullshit we hate punks, I´m Finnish and I know how we live indibiduality in Scandinavia black metal is the autoexploration of us we know us we know what we want and punk it´s only a bunch of little kids wanting to change the world. that is not how my room looks like, you fucked up NRK piece of shit! Jævla kristne faen, har du ikke noe bedre å gjøre enn å skape et stygt bilde av black metal? skaff deg et liv
the only thing i really like about dimmu is the origional stormblast and their first recording of raabjorn speiler draugheimens skodde. in for all tid.
Dimmu's first 2 albums were melodic black metal. Their subsequent albums are just heavy metal with extreme metal intensities and a whole lot of symphonic/melodic elements. Till this day, I can never understand why people still label them as a 'black metal' band. Just because they are "satanic" doesn't make them BM.
i wouldnt say satyricon sold out as much as they are trying to play everything, they even said, we dont try to be black metal, we just play what we want and let people label it as they please.
where is immortal? (even though he's in jail) where the fuck is varg vikernes????? why the fuck is dimmu in there? and it isn't like satyricon haven't sold out anyway.
ur kind of bithcing about it but i totly agree w/ u. theyr probly to scared to try to get newhere close to varg. btw y not Gorgoroth? they didnt totly sell out
Agreed on Varg. This particular BM documentary was apparently a fairly big production in Norway. I doubt if anyone in the mainstream media in this country would dare to profile Varg Vikernes.
People please do not use the "rate comments" function just because you disagree with what someone says. If comments in this thread become hidden because people are voting against a comment I will disable the comments completely. The "rate comments" function is not fair. If you want to make a point then SAY something and don't sit back and vote anonymously like some retarded coward who can't even explain why they have a certain opinion.
Dimmu Borgir and Emperor did not "create" black metal, they are two of the bands who "sold out" metal. Black metal was "created" by Immortal, Mayhem, Darkthrone and Burzum in 1992. Dimmu Borgir and Emperor followed later.
In all honesty though; I'm having trouble thinking of Norwegian BM bands that eventually didn't sell out one way or the other. But Dimmu Borgir posing in the mainstream media and Emperor scoring a top40 hit didn't really help evolve black metal in the right direction. So that's why so many underground people hate those bands nowadays.
Errr... I don't know many who hates Emperor. Very many disliked and/or hate Dimmu Borgir... but Emperor, nah. They're have a more legendary status. In the Nightside Eclipse is one of the pillars of Norwegian Black Metal, and I don't think anyone will debate that. If you wanna dislike a band then Satyricon is the one. They're popstars these days. No offence tho, I like their music, but still ... Satyr acts like a popstar. Dimmu not so much.
Satyricon and Dimmu Borgir are the only two hilghy commercial bands within Black Metal, Immortal? their not so commercial, but thay will be when thay releas their new album..
every BM Band has there downfall sooner or later, Empreor on the other hand got off their horse before thay fell, so to speak...
Its not fair to say every band has their downfall as if its expected. That only happens in scenes where the media exploit it and sell the image. Black metal is above that.
lol, you honestly think black metal is above selling out? If you think the media never exploited and sold the image of black metal (or helped define it for that matter) I suggest you watch the "Satan Rides The Media" documentary, it's also on youtube but not my upload so do a search.
hey man i'm not completely into this black metal world.. but dimmu borgir and emperor makes great music!! maybe is not the most underground and raw black metal but they own in front of many underground black metal bands because they can make MUSIC!! many of underground bands play nonsense music!! that's the reality!! undeground music helps involve black metal to the right direction??
Promethius is so gay, I agree. Fucking horrible gay dogshit. But early Emperor defined the Black Metal sound. You can compare it to Kill em All and the "Black" album.
-But even as a Dimmu fan, I know why some maybe "true" black metallers don't like them. I'm caught between heaven and hell with Dimmu! I feel that their sound is beginning to sound like less and less black metal.
where is part 2? oh by the way dimmu borgir's old records like stormblåst and for all tid are black metal else is symphonic or brutal deathmetal! dimmu sucks!
part 2 was deleted by youtube because it contains some explicit scenes (read: tits) You can watch part 2 on my website ghostradio . co . nr (click the link in the description of this video)
Lmao, the part when he said "no, im swearing to much im going to pee" i wish people could see Bm as an individualism aswell and that our parents stop sending us to fucking psyciatrists because they cant accept our taste in music and so on, it fucking pisses me off
and besides that: dimmu is not huge, or an pioneer of the metal scene but a band who only awnt to make money, money and money... and thats what BM stand NOT for...
Can someone explain why Dimmu should not be in this documentery? I"m not being ignorant. Just curious. In Canada, Dimmu Borgir is HUGE ! But keep in mind Black Metal is not as wide spread here. Its very hard to find good metal. It takes a lot of research for us Canadians.
Dimmu Borgir should not be there that is true, but Emperor certainly have every right to be there..afterall they are the creators of Symphonic Black Metal. Immortal & Enslaved should have been interviewed for this too.
darkthrone are the only band playing proper black metal these days, ugly - underproduced - raw - metal. all of these new bands are too polished & professional, they completely miss the spirit of the old bands. Darkthrone, Burzum, Bathory forever!
I've read somewhere that part 2 was deleted from youtube because of Frosts eyes, but the eyes are shown here in part 1 too, so I don't really get it... but it's just to download the whole thing anyway
Awesome ! Translations and all !!! I liked that DIMMU BORGIR played "Fast as a Shark" !!! It actually sounded pretty good !!! I should check-out Ghost Radio for pt. 2 AND for the rest of this one.
you can see samoth trying to reel ishahn in a bit...
got Ego?
this just kinda confirms what i have seen/read in interviews.. Samoth is a fucking standup dude, humble, talented, great great dude. having never met any of them i can only speculate but damn Ishahn doesn't come off looking too good there

I personally think that Darkthrone is the best BM band out there.
ZionXero 4 years ago
I would say that along with Mayhem they were/ are the best band of the Second Wave.
KaiserKarnage 4 years ago
but nothing beats the "original" stormblast by dimmu... dimmu ruined it tho with there crappy remake and went mainsteam, witch sucked
MrJesus666 3 years ago
the only thing i really like about dimmu is the origional stormblast and their first recording of raabjorn speiler draugheimens skodde. in for all tid.

can sum 1 tell me were i can find dimmu borgir playin fast as a shark?
ozlo77 4 years ago
Dimmu's first 2 albums were melodic black metal. Their subsequent albums are just heavy metal with extreme metal intensities and a whole lot of symphonic/melodic elements. Till this day, I can never understand why people still label them as a 'black metal' band. Just because they are "satanic" doesn't make them BM.

OMG..., Is it only me or did anyone else notice that Sam Dunn is on the cam from 6:45 - 6:47??
Btw, Sam Dunn is the popular interviewer from the documentary movie, Metal: A headbanger journey, watch it.
an1sh 4 years ago
Yes that's Sam Dunn and if you watch closely you can see the green ghost of Freddie Mercury hovering in front of him.
Metal: A Headbanger's Journey sucks btw.
ChristAlmightyAnal 4 years ago
i wouldnt say satyricon sold out as much as they are trying to play everything, they even said, we dont try to be black metal, we just play what we want and let people label it as they please.
m3eku5 4 years ago
I've got to agree with Yeaow.
structo1337 4 years ago
where is immortal? (even though he's in jail) where the fuck is varg vikernes????? why the fuck is dimmu in there? and it isn't like satyricon haven't sold out anyway.
Yeaow 4 years ago 2
ur kind of bithcing about it but i totly agree w/ u. theyr probly to scared to try to get newhere close to varg. btw y not Gorgoroth? they didnt totly sell out
m1s4nthr0p1c 4 years ago
Agreed on Varg. This particular BM documentary was apparently a fairly big production in Norway. I doubt if anyone in the mainstream media in this country would dare to profile Varg Vikernes.
DemilichFan 4 years ago
If BM is about individualism, fretting over what and who is "true" is for the weak, insecure ones. Herd mentality rears its ugly head. Tsk.

Fuck Emperor and Dimmu Borgir. Death to false black metal and all false metal!!
overthewall91 4 years ago
How can you call the creators of black metal false?
obholt 4 years ago
Dimmu Borgir and Emperor did not "create" black metal, they are two of the bands who "sold out" metal. Black metal was "created" by Immortal, Mayhem, Darkthrone and Burzum in 1992. Dimmu Borgir and Emperor followed later.
ChristAlmightyAnal 4 years ago
In all honesty though; I'm having trouble thinking of Norwegian BM bands that eventually didn't sell out one way or the other. But Dimmu Borgir posing in the mainstream media and Emperor scoring a top40 hit didn't really help evolve black metal in the right direction. So that's why so many underground people hate those bands nowadays.
ChristAlmightyAnal 4 years ago
why should having a popular song mean your a sellout?
lawwid228 4 years ago
Dimmu not so much.
dradeel 4 years ago
Satyricon and Dimmu Borgir are the only two hilghy commercial bands within Black Metal, Immortal? their not so commercial, but thay will be when thay releas their new album..
every BM Band has there downfall sooner or later, Empreor on the other hand got off their horse before thay fell, so to speak...
deadandstilldying606 4 years ago
Its not fair to say every band has their downfall as if its expected. That only happens in scenes where the media exploit it and sell the image. Black metal is above that.
Digideus 4 years ago
lol, you honestly think black metal is above selling out? If you think the media never exploited and sold the image of black metal (or helped define it for that matter) I suggest you watch the "Satan Rides The Media" documentary, it's also on youtube but not my upload so do a search.
ChristAlmightyAnal 4 years ago
hey man i'm not completely into this black metal world.. but dimmu borgir and emperor makes great music!! maybe is not the most underground and raw black metal but they own in front of many underground black metal bands because they can make MUSIC!! many of underground bands play nonsense music!! that's the reality!! undeground music helps involve black metal to the right direction??

Promethius is so gay, I agree. Fucking horrible gay dogshit. But early Emperor defined the Black Metal sound. You can compare it to Kill em All and the "Black" album.
dgarvin1 4 years ago
Don't forget Immortal, Darkthrone, Burzum, Enslaved and Mayhem.
ChristAlmightyAnal 4 years ago
You know, there were BM bands from diff countries before the Norwegian hype. Bands like Samael, Tormentor, Judas Iscariot, Beherit etc.

Lmao, the part when he said "no, im swearing to much im going to pee" i wish people could see Bm as an individualism aswell and that our parents stop sending us to fucking psyciatrists because they cant accept our taste in music and so on, it fucking pisses me off
Wigtilo 4 years ago
maybe cause dimmu isnt black metal you idiot!
Dimmu is Symphonic Death metal...
and besides that: dimmu is not huge, or an pioneer of the metal scene but a band who only awnt to make money, money and money... and thats what BM stand NOT for...
so that why dimmu should not be in this ;)

i'm not a fan of new emperor either, it's a shame to see what they've turned into..
