  • Marshall, Thank you so much for the insight. I really enjoy your videos.

  • Here's the difference between Marshall and Shawn and no offense to you Marshall your technical abilities are some of the most gifted/insane I've ever seen BUT Shawn Lane was more than speed. Replicating his speed is one thing but replicating his feel is a completely different monster and honestly I don't believe it's possible. Guthrie covered Get You Back pretty much note for note and it wasn't the same because he didn't have that magical feel that made Shawn's music so incredible.

  • @MusicWorksLA I bet my life on it he can, this is nothing to him, it's natural now. He has good control of the hi-gain distortion type sounds so he is good to go!!!

  • Very informative Marshall. I've been dabbling in some hybrid type stuff since watching you and Gabel a couple of years ago. Slow movin', I'm a picker or tapper usually. This is good! Thank you, ApB

  • what's your string gage, and how low the action is?

  • @MusicWorksLA Why wouldn't it work? ;p

  • Wow man. I love your playing. I'd love to see some lesson/melodic practice exercise videos if you're ever so inclined.

  • this is a wonderfully practical lesson. thanks for slowing it down at the beginning. if you have the time or inclination, would you consider at some point breaking down how you do your version of the paul gilbert lick? i've been watching this video and the clip on troy grady's page, but i can't quite figure out what you're doing.

  • this guy can play HOWEVER, the guy who compared him to shawn lane must be very young. watch his patterns and then watch shawn's stuff from 20 yrs ago. this dude will never catch up to shawn, even though shawn is deceased.

  • @TheBoilerman1

he wasn't far off comparing him. he is as close as it gets to matching the technicality of lane. he undeniably surpasses him in one way; hybrid picking. his hybrid picking ideas are extremely innovative and ridiculously challenging. this guy will probably never match shawn because his picking speed isn't up to date and he isn't anywhere near as technical with the stretches from what i have seen. it doesn't matter though, this guy is on a level that no more than 3 have gotten to.

  • not crazy about ronald jenkees or his solos and phrasing...

  • Hey Marshall what are your thought on all Vigier gutiars?

  • lane could play that shit 3 times faster.............In his sleep!, this guys head looks like its gonna explode, when trying it at 1/2 that speed

  • @vetmusician Death has been known to impede one's ability to play the guitar.

  • @MrUsedBooks what does that mean??!! Is this guy dying? he doesnt look very healthy compared to other videos ive seen..........

  • @vetmusician I am saying Shawn Lane cannot play this faster because he is not alive.

  • Have you played the new Marshall Harrison : warriors of rock ? I think its way better than Marshall Harrison 5, Marshall Harrison : World tour and the other ones like Marshall Harrison 3 : legend of rock and Marshall Harrison : Metallica ...

F*CK guitar hero i learn guitar NOW

  • I know most of them ziras is my fellow countryman and insane player(we hang out at the same forum) and of course della vega.iam not saying they cant play at that speed....iam saying you cant....why?from all your comments earlier.you said you can never match marshalls performance here but if you wanna know marshalls speed here is not even close to that speed.but even if you could you would probably need tabs cause you cant even figure it out lol ...enough said.

  • I wish i could hear his guitar tone as clear as his talking.

  • Marshall,

    YOUR MY HERO DUDE!

  • I gotta laugh every time I see some smart-ass making comments regarding the sound quality...Give me a freakin' break! Turn up YOUR volume or plug in YOUR headphones!

It's like complaining to Holdsworth....Just shut up and LEARN!

  • Tabs pl0x

  • Buddy u really should set a microphone in front of your amp to record these videos.Or, at least, Plug your amp to the computer. It will sound way better.

  • I can work out the notes of the Amaj7 chord easily enough so that is not a problem, but I can't follow what you are actually playing. Even when you say you are doing it slowly it's still faster than I can follow.

Could you please, please write out the tab to what you are playing with a screenshot or give us a link so we can download it. There is some amazing playing going on there and I really want to learn from it!

  • @Vercingetorix It's just the octaves.

  • @lawlz01

Yes, I can see that now :)

Anyway, I have been practicing the lick, but, there is no way I am going to get it up to Marshall miles per hour. But I still wish he would put up tab to some of his other lessons. It would make things sooo much easier to follow as his patterns are quite different to what most people normally do

  • @Vercingetorix Marshalls videos are really food for thought. He always chooses the best angle to put his camera so you can see what his picking hand is doing. For that alone those clips are tremendeously useful. As for the tabs part...use your ears man...if you cant really transcribe a sequenced pattern like that then your ears need some practice before even delving to your technique. This pattern is just an idea...use it to save your pick from travelling to a new string just for a single note.

  • @Dreamdancer11 You've been somewhat rude to me in your reply so allow me to respond in kind. I think leaving technique behind to develop my ears-is a such a fracking ridiculous statement that I can't believe you said it. Should I also stop studying theory until my ear-training catches up, stop practicing scales, stop singing, stop writing. I do ear training exercises when my teacher say to. So I reject anything you have to say. Marshalls lessons could be presented more clearly - end of story.

  • @Vercingetorix Let me rephrase and maybe you get the point. If you are not able to at least get a sequenced scale and play it...and you need tabs even for that....then you definately dont need to learn this kind of advanced tech just yet.its better to spend your time learning other things first.its like people who cant alternate even on a single string...and they start by drilling sweeps. This lesson isnt for begginers so he doesnt have to give you any more info.

  • @Dreamdancer11

I can already play 16th notes at a tempo of 300 bpm. How much fraking faster should I need to get b4 I can watch Marshall's videos?

  • @Vercingetorix 16 th notes at 300bpm....lol you can challenge tiago dela vegga then for the fastest guitarist on earth title.iam not even gonna comment on this...cause i want everyone that reads it to burst out laughing. But anyway if you were an advanced guitarist as you claim then you wouldnt want anymore explaining or what pattern he plays. The right hand zoomed at the right angle is enough.i guess you who can play 20 notes per second cant do it...lololol.

  • @Dreamdancer11 when I was younger I spent a lot pretending to be Steve Vai with the 10 hour workout and after that working on Rusty Cooley licks. And really playing 4 note-per-string scales and sequences really allows your fingers to fly. You can play a lot faster that way then the standard 3 noter-per-string sequences. Try it an see for yourself - there is a reason why Rusty Cooley and Francesco Fareri use the technique.

16's @ 300 bpm is becoming commonplace these day.

  • @Vercingetorix just to inform you shawn lane maybe the fastest shredder ever clocks at 18nps Cooley at 16 and you claim to play 20.Then you say you have done Vai΄s 10 hour workout since young but you are yet able to play a sequenced arp without tabs even after you are provided with a video.Personally i dont think you have a clue how fast that is but if you do then by all means...post a video for the guiness jugdes to claim a wr.i doubt if you can play FOTBB at even 180 bpm though...

  • @Dreamdancer11 Shawn lane was the fastest shredder ever utilizing 3 notes per string patterns, Clocked at 19nps. Personally, I don't have a hope in hell playing 3 string playing that fast. Those dim arps he used incredible. 4 string patterns are a different kettle of fish - that do allow you to play much faster look on YouTube An acoustic player in Brazil, a 67 year old doctor, plays flight of the Bumblebee and 302.

So keep on disbelieving - do or do not there is no try.

  • @Vercingetorix even if you play a simple chromatic run 1234 across all strings you still wont be able to reach that speed...but by all means if you can apply for the WR.You ll be famous you ll get sponsors the sky is the limit.i can only play scales at 190 16ths ultra clean...what do i know anyway....and shawn lane to inform you utilized many 4 note per string patterns still never reached your speed..not picked anyway.Oh and clean is the most important factor. We all can produce super fast noise.

  • Ok this is my last reply here because your negativity is getting to me. Firstly the WR is held by Della Vega playing Bumblebee at 21.666 nps. That Brazillian Doctor has a video on YouTube playing Bumblebee at 302bpm. Theodore Ziras also has a video playing at 300 bpm - look at his weekly Lick of the Week series he regularly plays at 240+. I havea video from Guitar Dojo with lesson from Rusty Cooley was playing at 280+ not topped out. A guy featured in GW is rumoured to play 24nps.

  • @Dreamdancer11 the thing about alot of shawn lanes fast stuff , he could descend instantly fast , down the strings , you dont see that much , this NPS stuff is more up and down a string , sure its real tough at that speed , but shawn , played way more complicated runs with his speed , only time he never sounded that musical , was when he played that wide augmented underwater sounding bubbly stuff .. i would love to see anyone play alot of his stuff to speed , that is doing this NPS stuff today

  • @Vercingetorix

I don't even think Marshall Harrison even does 16th notes to that fast tempo. He uses different types of note values like 16th notes triplets and 32 notes. Those can be as fast as 16th notes at 300 bpm if played at the tempo of 150.

  • @Vercingetorix In lamest terms..if you cant already alternate or economy pick really good you dont need this lesson. If you need more info than the info that is given you here to understand what he is doing and playing.........you dont need this lesson just yet.its not picking on you believe me...its common sense. If you are offended then thats your problem. So your guitar playing must be already at a really good level to get something from this video.

  • you are THE MAN

  • marshall you actually amaze me, can you please upload some chopin on guitar? I used to love your etude op10 no.2 vid you had up. You working on any piano stuff at the moment?

  • my fav is stay crunchy

  • Love this idea.

  • Pick is a dunlop 3mm big stubby

  • @Vonnegut I think it's the regular stubby. that's what I prefer anyway.

  • At first, i thought Ronald was a guitarist because I never heard of him and thought to myself I thought Marshall never listen to guitarists with exceptions for Holdsworth and Ulf. Now I see it's a synthesizer player. What part of the song is this sequence played?

Also, I'll love to see you do an improv to a Holdsworth song. Oh yeah, I love how you kicked out some nice licks at the ending to demonstrate hybrid picking.

  • @shadowknight132 at the 1:58 mark, this sequence is played. (Outer space jam)

  • Guitar is such a challenging instrument. You need totally different techniques to play different licks. And all licks can be played in all kinds of different positions and strings.

  • @kraunchmontozin I agree; ... you gotta love it ;)

  • Can you post the video of his that this is taken from?

  • awesome stuff Marshall..never knew about Ronald Thanks!

  • Wow thanks teaching us this, I think this could be applied to Malmsteen's Arpeggios From Hell. I've always had a problem playing that one clean because of the "inside picking" you end up having to do. Not too hard on its own, but tricky in the context that of that song...for me anyway

  • Mirin jobra

  • Hey Marshall, just wondering... What kind of pick do you use? Excellent video!

  • Great licks, thanks Marshall.

  • Great lesson, thanks mate.

  • Awesome, I'll definitely try it! thank you.

  • Can i get this in written form! :o

  • Those are so damn fluid man! Thanks! What kind of picks do you use?
