LOVE the show, but there really was not as much smoking going on, in that era, as it portrays. Blecch. Most people, by far, did NOT smoke. I notice that movies and tv shows covering that era usually overdo the incidence of smoking. I've pretty much watched the whole series on Netflix in the last couple of weeks. I've come to the conclusion that the series is just one large public service announcement for alcoholism and the story just kind of revolves around it. You watch the characters drink like fish only the booze hadn't started effecting the main characters until the latest season. Interesting series but it does get kind of ridiculous.
