A little strange one might say..
This is all about hyping the dangers of the oil spill and getting people to go to the FEMA camps. And the oil or tar but even more the dispersant BP is using really is poisonous.
By her own admission, its very difficult (ala "We're not very good at this" to predict or know the impact of various causes. The quadrillion interactions that exist in natural processes make this so.
@tardbuster007 She meant the impact on specific species. The model they (scientists) put together during the Exxon spill turned out to be completely off, and the real world effects wound up being much more catastrophic.
@MilitantPotato I know what she meant. Error can be bidirectional. Assuming that results of all modeling will be less "catastrophic" than real world based on one example is flawed. There are as many if not more where models predicted much worse results than real world. There's a major example of that going on right now on a grand scheme with "cooked" numbers being used for modeling to yield numbers that align with a political agenda.

@seanankerr Okay so you missed the point. Why would they disperse the oil making a greater quantity and making it more toxic than before. To save a little while killing more? @bluebeard2 It was their lowball numbers of the spill rate that cause the mistakes... If you are told to stop a 1000 barrel a day spill my the higher ups and design a solution for that, it's not wonder it doesn't work.... The flow rate was orders of magnitude grater.
I agree, that's a fair point. To be fair though, that could've been caused by their limited ability to muster engineering expertise in short order. Or it could've been an engineer doing a bit of old fashioned arse covering. We might never know.

And, whatever solution(s) you propose, are you willing to be accountable for them?

what do you mean we? it's the business companies that are doing all this pollution. who else can product so much waste? we are all point the finger at ourselves but the biggest culprit are companies who privatize profits and socialize losses like this current disaster.
@tdreamgmail government interventionism is what causes stuff like this; don't mistake symptoms for causes. Companies like BP and others are forced to drill that deep because of legislation; that's what increases the risk and on top of that the fact that you have a tragedy of the commons scenario going on when it comes to unowned ocean with government officials lining their pockets with dirty money. The companies are not the ones to blame.
@biozamadotcom lol the biggest hypocrite. YOu drive ? You use plastic ? OTher stuff ? Then your the same demon. What do you do ? Have you created/joined any group to do something ? OR are you one of many drones that are pushed by the commercial that they see or something 'shocking' that you never had a idea till the TV showed you.
@tiknoriumatyti I know many who have only to be suppressed by the government.
Haliburton and BP, people. When the people have had enough, BP and Haliburton are on the list.
Lamest excuse ever is "do you drive?" What an imbecile. There are responsible wildcatters all over the USA who have never done such irresponsible things as this.
What a dumb statement! "Do you drive?" "Do you use plastic?" Acting as an apologist for BP is like defending Bush/Obama, not possible anymore.
@tiknoriumatyti: There is a huge difference between knowing what is the right thing and doing the right thing.
your comment is as hypocritic as biozamadotcom's comment is. The only difference is, that he realized that this is about what SHOULD be done and not about what individual people allready do.
Hope at this interval is a misapprehension of the future, an illusion, which characterizes the lack of knowledge and accurate facts of the BP Oil Spill. Facts as such are not the fruitful elements of knowledge. To be useful, facts and details must be augmented by some relation so that an interpretation is possible; thereby we can proceed to resolve and restore the Gulf Region. Moral knowledge cannot be separated from the moral actions that are required in restoring the pride of the Gulf.
We're so sick. It's sad. Obviously we don't care so much wildlife and the planet. But if the threat is pointed at us, maybe this will inspire real change to take place.
I wonder if anyone else has noticed this. Whenever videos like this are published - videos of knowledgeable people with deep concerns for the environment, they always seem to attract a strange, contra-audience. It's an audience who (not knowing the science behind the video) attempt to attack the presentations on only the emptiest of levels.
They always seem to make the most bizarre comments like: "this is boring." or "I don't like her hair"
@BeondaPale The sad part about your spot on comment is that people are still making ignorant empty comments after you commented here. Good comments and thumbs up!
@BeondaPale That's because the largest audience on You-Tube are kids. Not news. Those types of comments is a result of You-tubes largest audience. Kids will flourish videos from Users such as: Fred and abandon what really matters. Can we plausibly blame there parents?
@BeondaPale So you are saying it is mostly rigged then, if you say much more of it is political. I get a sense of that too sometimes. It is quite childish nonetheless, and if these are acts by adults, which obviously it would be if it is politically motivated, they should be ashamed of themselves for being so childish at their ages. There is far too much room for that than necessary in this world.
@BeondaPale What I mean by rigged is that people are saying these things on purpose out of political motivation. And they aren't children. They are well aware what they are doing.
It's not just BP, it's every Oil company. Every company is is guilty of these crimes and they should all be held responsible for their actions. BP just happened to draw the 'lucky' straw this time. My worst fear is that these issues may never be taken seriously and our world will quickly decay into nothing but a toxic shell housing Humanity.
@defect530 I thought it was a very interesting and worrying talk. Just because you have the 3-minute attention span of most Americans doesn't mean that Shaw is a bad/boring speaker. What did you want her to do, juggle while she gave her talk?
@joelito101 Good question. I'm surprised that after the unbelievably poor handling of this spill by BP that the government and most Americans haven't done something about it. In my opinion, BP should have provided the money for the capping and clean-up, and the government alongside the Gulf coast locals should have been the ones to take care of the situation. Having BP in charge of the situation is like letting a murderer be the judge in his own court case, it makes no sense.
I wonder how many environmentalists admit that the government is the worlds largest polluter? The fact that the state offers perks and special positions to friends in industy, thus creating an unaccountable organization that's self regulated? Oil companies and industry are DWARFED by the US government in terms of environmental destruction.
"...not be afraid to assert, as a combination of terror and trust in the people, the reactivation of one of the figures of all egalitarian-revolutionary terrors, the "informer" who denounces the culprits to the authrorities"
Nobody cares anymore, television and radio has been and still is brainwashing generations of people into telling them that they are only having success with a nice car and women and house and boat , etc Someone who even tries a little is bound to be a failure in life according to those standards. It's hard to sacrifice your happiness because a car will attract most women out there. Being without it makes you just look poor, not smart or green.
@ijust1 no, there isn't. there's another TED vid where the issue is discussed by Carl Safina- sloppy management and lack of rule enforcement played a major role in the oil spill. however, i won't say that lobbying does not enforce products, as in some cases they are so majorly subsidized and other options so scarce that people are forced to opt for worse products.
I can't tell if you're agreeing or disagreeing with me. In either case, it is an undeniable fact that US trade regulations de-facto require manufacturers in all kinds of industries to use these kinds of chemicals.
In a free market, they would not be required to use them and only would in cases where it made sense.
@ijust1 I respectfully think you are sorely mistaken. If you are correct, it is because something is being done that simply SHOULD NOT BE DONE AT ALL.
Regulation is not the problem, the activity is. Regulation is sanity. Free markets are dangerous and need to be handled with care. They allow rich madmen to do nonsense with the world, extracting private benefit from public exploitation.
Assuming we share the values of preserving nature, increasing life-expectancy, education, literacy, etc, then freedom in the economy existing with a network of property rights are superior to government-control.
Government control always falls to special interests. In a free society, well-funded, highly organized special interests are a far more potent political force than the disperse, general interest of "the people". The FDA, SEC, ICC, IRS are all controlled by special interests.
@ijust1 Again, I respectfully disagree. Special interests will RULE in a free market, unless there is a shield against their tyranny, and the gov't is that shield.
Your premise that we "share values" is nice, but not true, and the "values" you state are just words, really; everyone has a slightly different idea about what those "values" entail.
Too bad this is a youtube conversation. :) Ah, well. Have a good one!
she said WEAK regulations, as you yourself have typed, not LESS regulations, which is what you apparently think she said. In conclusion she is appealing for better regulations not more; regulations lobbied by manufacturers are not good regulations they are simply "profitable" regulations
@ragnarocks0 There is no other kind. Well-funded special interests always beat "the people" in a free society. Hence the need for strong property rights and a free market, so companies cannot buy government power, which is the power of force.
using or not using dispersants is NOT a decision for the people that are best informed to make. thats not how the united states and the united kingdom work. also, it is not a decision where the people that are affected or the nature involved matters.
the laws are clear. what, and how many dispersants are being used is a public relations decision of BP. the corporations have the power over our planet right now, and the politicians of too many countries defend this instead of challenging it.
"BP is running the show" and they obviously make it worse than better. Even when a company is caught, they won't turn away from their profit motive. EVERYTHING will suffer that is not directly connected with profits. How can anybody expect anything else than innovation from any company? Why are they trusted with this cleanup?
Corporations have taken control of our planet and are ruining it for us all. They commit immense crimes against nature that makes us all suffer and they never have to pay for these crimes. When will we wake up?
@jasonlajoie We are the ones responsible for not rising up in opposition to the corporatocracy. As long as we think that righteousness happens spontaneously (it sure as hell doesn't), the multinationals will keep grabbing power and influence from us, the people.
@sebsy15 Oh, you don't think that massive corporations don't have your best interests in mind? You think they only care about the bottom line? But that's commie pinko socialist talk! You must be against free enterprise and capitalism! How unpatriotic of you.
i find it amazing that the people supplying and using the Corexit care so little about the earth that they will continue to rape and destroy it.. these are not scientists...
this spill has been so depressing that all my aversions to capital punishment are starting to take a back seat to my aversions to this ecological neglect and devastation...
how can people be so criminally detached to nature, and on the other side, how can people like this woman, caring and working on the research, stand it?
@Umbalafum simple the human cultures that were attached or conscience of nature got slaughtered centuries ago and continue to be exterminated today.. the dominant culture that exists today could give a shit about anything but themselves... we today are living parasites we don't even let our natural waste naturally reintegrate into nature whether it be coffins or human waste..
@Th3Wab3 thanks for reminding me - back in the 80ies with the appearance of the Green movement this was an often cited phrase - Only after the last tree has been cut down / Only after the last river has been poisoned / Only after the last fish has been caught / Then will you find that money cannot be eaten. - by Chief Seattle, modified.
@Umbalafum well said, a msg that speaks volumes...
I'm currently reading "A Peoples History of The United States of America" by the late Howard Zinn... simply fascinating Historiography.. America would be a different place if it were standard in all high school regardless of whether you agree with the facts or not...
@Th3Wab3 sure you're right (after a short review at Wiki) - just watched a similar documentation - "Canada: A People's History" in 17 parts (ok, surely more emotional).
@Umbalafum I like your comments, from the heart and well said. I always think of Easter Island as an analogy. They plundered the island, cut down all the trees, consumed all the resources and left themselves stranded without even the means to construct a boat and escape. It's a lesson for the whole world.
Aww American you care about oil spills now, but what about all the oil spills cause by you. what about all the river pollution, deforestation ect ect cause by you. also oil is actually pretty temporary oil is a natural compound and after few years will brake down and well if there's wild life near the japaneese american nuclear bombed ciites then it will happily return the the gulf
@BenFosterification "oil is actually pretty temporary oil is a natural compound and after few years will brake down" - It is also a solvent for other elements and compounds that we also don't want in the environment. It does not break down in "just a few years" and in all scenarios it will not repair itself in any timescale acceptable to human beings. It certainly is will not repair itself in any timescale that will help the people who live off the area.
An MSDS sheet is an excellent warning in my opinion. But imagine the size and scope of a single report of the toxins inside a container of oil. Since this is a concept of a private investigation into the chemical compounds of all things, who would be most likely to keep this kind of stuff on file in a typical construction job site? The idiots that I work with don't even realize that falling breaks things.
@chungdha - Isn't that supposed to be god, surely with the concentration of bible thumpers in that area God would of heard something about this by now. hehe.

what do you mean we? it's the business companies that are doing all this pollution. who else can product so much waste? we are all point the finger at ourselves but the biggest culprit are companies who privatize profits and socialize losses like this current disaster.
tdreamgmail 1 year ago 2
@tdreamgmail government interventionism is what causes stuff like this; don't mistake symptoms for causes. Companies like BP and others are forced to drill that deep because of legislation; that's what increases the risk and on top of that the fact that you have a tragedy of the commons scenario going on when it comes to unowned ocean with government officials lining their pockets with dirty money. The companies are not the ones to blame.

Some of it might be little kids, I think much more of it is political
BeondaPale 1 year ago
@BeondaPale So you are saying it is mostly rigged then, if you say much more of it is political. I get a sense of that too sometimes. It is quite childish nonetheless, and if these are acts by adults, which obviously it would be if it is politically motivated, they should be ashamed of themselves for being so childish at their ages. There is far too much room for that than necessary in this world.
luc59457 1 year ago
@BeondaPale What I mean by rigged is that people are saying these things on purpose out of political motivation. And they aren't children. They are well aware what they are doing.

So, why are we letting BP poison our oceans?
joelito101 1 year ago

Being without it makes you just look poor, not smart or green.
archymtln 1 year ago 2
"..because we're flame retarding everything and because we have weak regulations on toxic chemicals"
No. It's because we have an OVERLY regulated manufacturing industry which FORCES companies to use these chemicals to meet "government standards".
Wanna know who lobbied for those standards. The flame retardant manufacturers. We don't need more regulation!
ijust1 1 year ago
@ijust1 no, there isn't. there's another TED vid where the issue is discussed by Carl Safina- sloppy management and lack of rule enforcement played a major role in the oil spill. however, i won't say that lobbying does not enforce products, as in some cases they are so majorly subsidized and other options so scarce that people are forced to opt for worse products.
iSketch4you 1 year ago
I can't tell if you're agreeing or disagreeing with me. In either case, it is an undeniable fact that US trade regulations de-facto require manufacturers in all kinds of industries to use these kinds of chemicals.
In a free market, they would not be required to use them and only would in cases where it made sense.
ijust1 1 year ago
@ijust1 I respectfully think you are sorely mistaken. If you are correct, it is because something is being done that simply SHOULD NOT BE DONE AT ALL.
Regulation is not the problem, the activity is. Regulation is sanity. Free markets are dangerous and need to be handled with care. They allow rich madmen to do nonsense with the world, extracting private benefit from public exploitation.
MrTStoddart 1 year ago 2
Assuming we share the values of preserving nature, increasing life-expectancy, education, literacy, etc, then freedom in the economy existing with a network of property rights are superior to government-control.
Government control always falls to special interests. In a free society, well-funded, highly organized special interests are a far more potent political force than the disperse, general interest of "the people". The FDA, SEC, ICC, IRS are all controlled by special interests.
ijust1 1 year ago
@ijust1 Again, I respectfully disagree. Special interests will RULE in a free market, unless there is a shield against their tyranny, and the gov't is that shield.
Your premise that we "share values" is nice, but not true, and the "values" you state are just words, really; everyone has a slightly different idea about what those "values" entail.
Too bad this is a youtube conversation. :) Ah, well. Have a good one!
MrTStoddart 1 year ago
@ijust1
she said WEAK regulations, as you yourself have typed, not LESS regulations, which is what you apparently think she said. In conclusion she is appealing for better regulations not more; regulations lobbied by manufacturers are not good regulations they are simply "profitable" regulations
ragnarocks0 1 year ago 2
@ragnarocks0 There is no other kind. Well-funded special interests always beat "the people" in a free society. Hence the need for strong property rights and a free market, so companies cannot buy government power, which is the power of force.
ijust1 1 year ago
using or not using dispersants is NOT a decision for the people that are best informed to make. thats not how the united states and the united kingdom work. also, it is not a decision where the people that are affected or the nature involved matters.
the laws are clear. what, and how many dispersants are being used is a public relations decision of BP. the corporations have the power over our planet right now, and the politicians of too many countries defend this instead of challenging it.

"BP is running the show" and they obviously make it worse than better. Even when a company is caught, they won't turn away from their profit motive. EVERYTHING will suffer that is not directly connected with profits. How can anybody expect anything else than innovation from any company? Why are they trusted with this cleanup?
P1ranh4 1 year ago
Corporations have taken control of our planet and are ruining it for us all. They commit immense crimes against nature that makes us all suffer and they never have to pay for these crimes. When will we wake up?
jasonlajoie 1 year ago 4
@jasonlajoie We are the ones responsible for not rising up in opposition to the corporatocracy. As long as we think that righteousness happens spontaneously (it sure as hell doesn't), the multinationals will keep grabbing power and influence from us, the people.

BenFosterification 1 year ago
