my gf has a 94 Subaru Liberty and it makes a whining noise when were on the freeway. lol. but i guess thats expected of a car that old. Its done just over 300,000k and our mechanic says its still going strong. Great example of how a well looked after Subaru can reward ya.
My girlfriends 08 Impreza makes a similar noise, but we notice it when driving on the highway and trying to accelerate in high gear (auto). It's much louder and def sounds like a heat shield or something. Subaru denies hearing the sound. It must be a common problem though.
I have the same problem. Its not your engine mounts, its a clutch problem. Lift the revs to the point of the hum and push the clutch in... the noise will stop!
working for subaru for over two years, this is normal after some time, engine harmonics... get your engine mounts checked though, they can transfer vibration to the cabin...
could it be a heat shield rattling on the exhaust , i had a similar sound , i just bent the heat shield away from the exhaust a bit, which stop the nose
it's the heat shield. my '08 3.0R did the same exact thing. had the clips replaced on the heat shield and the vibration/humming went away.

If this sound annoys you, then you need to get another car because the boxer sound is beeeeeeeeeautifull!!!!.....just saying though!

We got the same on our 94/95 Legacy with the 2.0 Engine. I think it's the heat shield over the KAT...but im not sure.
I am 100% sure that it's coming from the front of the car and it only does it when its warm.
Oh and it does it between 3500 and 4500 rpm.
I will make a Video tomorrow.

I think you need to either turn up the volume and listen carefully or get your ears checked. ;)
