The special effects are part of the tray (aka go-go cart) that David makes sure is positioned properly at the beginning of the demo.

he may have been holding the power cord, but Richard didn't pull it; look at his hand and you can see that it stays put until the explosion. if anything, this was a prank by Letterman's special effects guys. besides, Richard wouldn't pull a prank like this for the potential to lose sales of the product he's pushing; that would be idiotic. the Late Show also has a history of random, weird-ass pranks, and they happened to pull a perfect musical number at the perfect time.
