...guys this drummer is really amazing, quite a solo, but the drums sucks, I don't like Tama, sorry..., ....imagine this same solo but on a drum kit with a better sound contrast between each other, ..the tuning is too high for each drum...
READ THISSSSS!: How much would you pay for the drumset that you are watching in this video? I mean, THE SAME, played by Simon Phillips himself...
Help me with some thumbs up! Who knows, maybe this drumset can be owned by some lucky guy soon :P (for those who are having problems understanding: I'm selling the very same drumset)
he can play the shuffle like Bernard Purdie, he can roll like Buddy Rich, he can play the double bass like Gene Hoglan, in my opinion the most versatile drummer on Earth!
I know I will date myself with this comment but its great to hear & see the posibilties of how far drumming skills can go. always inspirational to watch someone play then to just listen to a record :)
Travis Barker is to the drum community as red meat is to hungry dogs. I think he does what he does well enough but then the fanboys come out and because they don't know enough about drumming and the great drummers, say stupid @Q#$ like he's the GOAT and then I wind up hating Barker for it. In reality, Barker couldn't carry Jojo Mayer's sticks.
I can't believe how good that hat sounds and how epic that groove is. I'm honestly most impressed by what most would look at and think is simple. Chops come with experience, but this man has something truly his own and I really dig it.
@mrboverbro Yes,it's a Superstar the reason why Simon is not playing on his Starclassic is because this clinic was done in Santiago,Chile in 2008,and It's really hard to find a Starclassic kit here, there is only one official dealer for TAMA in Chile,it's impossible to find Simon's Kit downhere, that's why TAMA sent this Superstar in Dark Desert Burst Accel Driver, 24" Bass Drum.
Anyway these drums sounds great,if you play like SP, you can do amazing grooves even with a Stagestar.
Not Clean. Who can play the 1/2 time shuffle cleaner than Simon. Purdie does a great job but its much slower. Simon is adding such great double bass variation and mixed time signature fills. Its simply brilliant.
every drum clip i watch some body is slagging Travis Barker, surely this more than anything is a testament to travis's succes as a drummer, yes he's known for being a punk drummer but is capable of much more, i'm sure he could play a great half time shuffle too
I've been always playing open handed. Just because it was convenient and no-one showed me "the wrong way". I learned that it's not common kind of too late... And now I can actually see how silly it looks ;p. Too relaxed and easy, as if you weren't playing but just sitting there... Usually drummers seem more acrobatic so with open hand you lose half of entertaining value and showmanship... lol.
but maybe you can get more music ;p combinatorically.
@odolany I dunno, I swapped to open handed about a year after I started playing because I thought the cross over technique looked shit, also there are far more options for working the right side of the kit. If it's good enough for greats like Cobham and Phillips then it's the way to go IMHO.
My guess (and it's only a guess) is that in trying to make the switch to open handed playing, if you can master the left hand hi hat shuffle, you've got it. A shuffle is a triplet without the second beat, far more "rudimentary" than quarters or straight eighths, it is the key to jazz timekeeping, it is the essence of swing. Get that down and the rest falls into place.
@Dorkie123dork I hope you are right. I am in the middle of that process right now and I am currently trying to get that shuffle going with my left hand (very very slowly).
who the hell is Travis Barker? Simon Phillips is a god, how dare you compare him with a mere head banger? Insolent bastards.... repent for you have sinned....
I think people like to bring up travis barker on all good drumming vid's because they know it's gonna stir some shit up haha. because lets face it, travis is like a shitty 4 piece ashton kit when you compare him to talented drummers.
You can actually hear a collective intake of breath from the audience right before "whoop" when they realize how fast and fluently he's slipping in and out of the shuffle and a closed roll. It's literally breathtaking. Cheers.
Barker is god's f'n blight upon real drummers. It's f'n surreal. You figure you'd escape his pedestrian name on a Simon Phillips clinic page, because anyone looking for Phillips *must* know what real drumming is. Nope. "Travis Barker, Travis Barker, Travis Barker!" Go play your f'n guitar hero you posers. I actually had nothing speciffically against TB before youtube, but he's the saint of all poser drummers....
I don't blame Judas Priest for telling this guy back in 1977, "You're too good to play with us." As great as they were at the time and eventually became, this guy had better things to do, as you can still see that to great effect.
@SheenDeAngeli Okay, probably so. I'd read someplace that Judas Priest wanted somebody who wasn't so technically skilled, which is odd seems how they have that now with Scott Travis. It is my understanding that Simon was hired as a session player at first and later wanted to keep him but he was in too high demand as a session player to coninue on full-time. To be honest, I don't really know the full story since I can't seem to find reliable info. Every fan site seems to have different stories.
@SheenDeAngeli Ah I see now. Isn't it odd that they had wanted someone who wasn't technical and had him for 10 years, then went back to someone with a TON of technical skill, Scott Travis, as I mentioned before. The big difference between Dave Holland's predecessors and Scott, I suppose, is that Simon and Les were more jazz-oriented while Scott is more a speed-metal skinbasher. Am I right on this?
@SheenDeAngeli I think you're right on that. I do like Scott because he can be very verastile and he's a very smart drummer who can adopt to the styles of his predecessors to play the older tracks (he was PERFECT on the "British Steel Anniversary DVD", though I saw it on an HD channel), plus he gives Priest the ability to play thrashier songs too.
I met Simon at one of his clinics back in 1993. He has been one of my favorites. I love the wide open sound, with no dampening on the kit. After seeing his clinic, I went home, and removed dampening (tape etc.) on the drum heads, and learned how to properly tune my kit. He's still awesome... Love that he still plays a large kit!
If you compare Travis Barker to Simon Phillips... I will track you down and punch you in the face and if you aren't knocked out cold....I will slam you with a monster 24"x24" kick drum.
@alessandrozerbone naa barker is not the problem, he doesn't overrate himself, and actually what he plays even fits the music of his bands, it's the people that can't stop comparing that are the problem
@azrie8080 It's probably a Starclassic kit in Dark Desert Burst. It's hard to tell though, I have the Superstar kit in the similar finish. They're practically the same.

Simon is soo much the man! He has always been a hero of mine. He is one of the few guys that DESTROYS the small-kit fascist ideas. (The idea that drummers should only have a 4pc kit, otherwise creativity is lost). Simon uses a huge kit -all of it- and does it with extreme grace and creativity in any genre you can throw at him.
@Acrylicdrums different strokes for different folks buddy, there are some bad ass kick, snare, hat, ride only guys out there that totally kill it, as well if not better than simon. but simon is a bad ass mo fo.
