sometimes, when someone reveres and truly loves a piece of music, he/she will conduct it somewhat slower to get that extra "meaning" /substance out of it. another reason may be to make a different statement... its been done exactly the same way for the umpteenth time, why not try something different? But this is too slow! lol
I think James Newton-Howard should be the next composer to conduct / record PARADE OF THE CHARIOTEERS. His aspiring music to scores to films such as WATERWORLD, WYATT EARP, HIDALGO, THE FUGITIVE, ATLANTIS THE LOST EMPIRE have thrilling scores like Williams and Rozsa.
Yes...the CPO have done a much better job. Of course, the original recordings by Dr. Rozsa are the best. I find it strange that Williams would slow the tempo down so much. He was a great admirer of Dr. Rozsa and often claims he was one of his inspirations to go into film and tv composing. Slowing the tempo here so much turns the whole march into a bit of a dirge.
parade of the charioteers is a great number, and it sure worked well in the ben-hur score. actually, most of the ben-hur score is top notch. overall, though, i think williams has deservedly found much more success as a film composer than rosza ever did.
Williams is a great film compose...a legend, if you like. Dr. Rozsa...well his music is the music of the Gods. Successful? I bet he is God's composer-in-residence in heaven. I love his music and I have nothing but love and admiration in my heart for the man as well. Vale, Miklos Rozsa.
Me parece maravillosos que los grandes músicos del mundo adoren BEN-HUR. Es una música grandiosa. Y lógicamente, la versión de John Williams está actualizada. Recomendada.

exactly to the point below, this is too slow, can we drag the "parade" some any more? The Charioteers are walking in quicksand.

@jslasher Having watched the movie for the umpteenth time recently, I can say John Williams' vision for The Parade is spot on.

I am sorry to give this the thumbs down. The problem is the tempi, which are simply just t--o--o s----l----o----w.

@jslasher1 Yeah I agree. This number needs a faster upbeat, and authoritative sound to be really impressive.

William is my favorite of all time. Yes even more than Miklos. But he's my second favorite. Would love to go to a concert one day...

Williams is a great composer, of that there is no doubt, but his conducting here is a little wrong. The tempo is just a tad too slow.

The Ben-Hur music is one of the best movie-music of all time.
John Williams and Miklos Rózsa are both great composers.

Great piece of music, captures the style of what music might have been in the Roman ages of Tubae, Cornae, and Tympani!
Enjoyed... Thanks
