  • Perhaps they should have spoken Manchu.

  • The last 10 minutes of this movie almost made me cry

  • Whoops, I thought this was about Fedor

  • Nice1 . III - 7 (DAY)

  • i hope someone can help me on this one...does anybody know if Colonel Yoshioka in the movie his character is based on a Colonel who´s name was Yasunori Yoshioka he was like the boss of pu yi. does anybody know if in the movie his character is based on that real yoshioka? or is just concidence?

  • Puyi cooperated with the Japs, he got what he deserved.

  • @ImAllFact He got what he deserved he end his life as Party represent so he life out half of his life confortble until his death Mao like him so alow him to live and was pardoned for his crimes he probaly deserved worst

  • What fascinates me most about this movie is that it shows how a radical a human's life can change. He starts as a traditional emperor, and he ends as a gardener...

  • empress Cixi she is the real last empress with power, Puyi did nothing, he became a librarian. And Mao on the other side was a librarian who became emperor, how ironic.

  • @GJGJ654 yep.

  • The asian baby is a cutie

  • "10,000 years," I love this movie

  • Over the ranting of a little atheistic prick, I'd pick this any day.

  • EMPIRE OF THE SUN! WOOO.. wayyyyy better

  • sad movie...

  • Bernardo bertolucci does not make movies anymore?

  • It's an okay movie, but it did not deserve the best picture oscar. Empire of the Sun did.

  • idk, i didnt reallly care for that movie honestly... It was dumb, it just wasnt good

  • so was this dubbed? or was it made in english?

  • i don't care it is in english

  • John Lone should be nominated for an oscar for his performance.

  • actually the version we all saw, the 165 minute one, IS the director's cut. the longer 218 minute one is NOT the director's cut its a television release.

  • fedor emelianenko,,,

  • Que alguien por favor cuelgue esta pelicula en español (castellano) en megavideo para ver en online!!

  • After reading the 3 books about Pu-Yi, I like the movie less. It's great to watch, with great acting, direction, set design, etc. But the facts are wrong.

Pu-Yi was NOT shrewd and ambitious like he is in the movie. He was like a child raised in isolation, even into adulthood. He spent all of his time playing with train sets and children's toys. When he was captured by the Russians, they wanted to give him to the USA. But the US officers thought he was mentally retarded, and refused to take him.

  • @MondoBeno lol

  • @MondoBeno I just read this book about him in Hong Kong. He truly didn't like being cramped inside the Forbidden City all the time, he was constantly trying to escape. There are pictures of him on the rooftops of his houses after the guards apprehended him.

  • @MondoBeno what were those three books?

  • @cvgomez22

    1. The Last Emperor (the most reliable)

    2. The Puppet Emperor (a bit on the sensational side)

    3. From Emperor to Citizen (his autobiography)

  • The last emperor's new clothes.

  • Where's Fedor Emelianenko?

  • LOL! "Available on videocassette..."

  • The song playing at the beginning was the same one played at the beginning of the movie Santeria. Does anyone know what it's called?

  • @OliveOilMed I found it at last

    Song:

    Lost soul - Bliss

  • @AlphaVisuals Thank you so much!

  • i'm not sad at all that it is english instead of manchu language.

  • i wish history wasn't such a dick, its sad how things all turned out. and to think that if the government sense the bigging would have made him emperor not allot of messed up things would had not happened, i think he would had become a fine emperor if things would have gone different. its amazing that i came up to this movie its beautiful and horrible in every way, its art. i wish now that someone could make a movie of the last emperor of mexico moctezuma II just to see my country at its prime.

  • I thought this was going to be about Fedor. I saw this movie years ago, enjoyed it.

  • Screenplay by an Englishman, financed singlehandedly by another Englishman, directed by an Italian, filmed by another Italian, scored by a Japanese, starring Chinese and Chinese-Americans and an Irishman, made under the auspices of pre-reform government of the PRC (who no doubt had an active interest in the political message)

  • @boomaga

I can assure you that this movie was made well after the reform in 1979. The ending of the movie also illustrates the rise of capitalism in China as there are tour guides of the city.

  • nice movie. Doesn't really matter wich language it's in, but i'd rather watch it in mandarin. I't would've been cool :)

  • i felt so bad for the prince all his life he was just a puppet :((

  • how long is this movie? i might watch it for a His Project but I have to know how long it is...

  • Is already in blu ray??

  • damn... this was one hell of a good movie

  • Become one with Mother Russia.

  • I miss VHS, DVD are sucky shit that breaks if you don't take care of it

  • @SMGJohn haha. aww come on at least you don't have to rewind the whole thing if you want to watch it again XD

  • @lahgazi No you only have to buy a new one after some months

  • Jean Reno as Léon (The Professional) at 0:26 LOL, looks like him there anyways, love those glasses. =)

  • This movie would of been alot better in Chinese. Wasn't to impressed overhyped by a long shot.

  • Hujowe i dupne

  • FEDOR!

  • The trailer could have benefitted by not having the disneyesque tune.

  • How dare you?!

  • You're right! That melody is practically "If I never knew you" from Pocahontas.^^

  • makes me feel fed up with life

  • DANG! 9 academy awards!

  • As if that would guarantee a great movie... (though TLE is good ;)

  • because of my Best Picture goal, I HAVE to see this. it looks entertaining

  • @paint9er I too am trying to watch every best picture ther was =)

  • and the last emperor is a little boy?

  • This movie would of been a hell lot better if it was made in Chinese instead of English. It was really silly having all of them speaking English. I don't mind reading subtitles at all. who wouldn't want to see this in Chinese ?

  • i feel that way about a lot of movies about other cultures... Memoirs of a Geisha and Imprint are two that I felt should have been in Japanese

  • i so agree with you. it's china. so when they speak english its kinda like. why are you speaking english when you are educated with mandrin

  • I would've loved to see this in Chinese.

  • Just like mel gibson made apocalypto in mayan, you are right ,this movie would been better if it was made in chinese, there are millions of millions of chinese speakers in the world ,it would not be hard to find actors who speak chinese

  • @Se7enClub Compare to many Chinese movies made in China with the same subject (My dad is mainland Chinese, a very traditional one) I prefer this movie rather than those speak in Mandarin but with messy storylines (esp. Chinese movies in 1987 were not as good as now). Language doesn't matter as long as the movie is good, And this movie was MUCH MORE than just GOOD. A Master pieces. it bring out the whole story of the big change of 4000 years History better than any other movies.

  • @Se7enClub duuude i know... dubing it was a very bad idea. but it's a very underrated movie

  • @Se7enClub I TOTALLY AGREE! I hate it when they do that, man!

  • @Se7enClub i have no objection to that but in 1980's alot

of people would want it to be english

  • @Se7enClub exactly! I wish someone could upload the film to youtube too!

  • @Se7enClub

Because Puyi was not even the real last emperor. (unless you insist on calling this pigtail wearing Manchu lord "Chinese emperor"). The last emperor of China, Emperor Yongli of Ming was murdered by Manchus barbarians in 1661. Puyi was no more the last emperor of China than George VI the last emperor of India. (And of course, no less, since the conquerors always arrogated to themselves fancy titles to assert the legitimacy of their colonial rule.)

  • @canadaempireloyalist That is not a good comparison, as the British did not adopt Indian culture, however the Manchus adopted Chinese culture. The Manchus were Chinese, however they were not Han Chinese. Emperor Yongli wasn't murdered by Manchus by the way. He was murdered by a traitor.

  • @canadaempireloyalist (continued) Now that I look at your comment, and the one you were responding to, your comment doesn't really answer anything he was talking about, and it seems like you just brought it up just to try to troll.

  • @canadaempireloyalist The last Ming Emperor wasnt killed by Manchu he killed himself along with his household when Rebels besiege him the Ming Dinasty wasnt better than the others I like them but by its fall was decadent corrupt and rebelious just like the Quing would be in end the takeover by Quing was natural process the Manchu didnt killed Ming they kill the rebels with Ming Loyalists the short run Shun Dynasty

  • @Se7enClub

the sad truth is that if this movie was made in chinese it would no way have been as near as popular as it is

  • @Se7enClub Because it is not a Chinese production first and then English is the language the most spoken in the world. The director is Italian you should be lucky that the language selected was not in Italian. You still can get this movie with Chinese subtitles if you rather...

  • @Se7enClub everyone who doesn't like subtitles, it's so that it appeals more the mainstream america, why do u think they're remaking "girl with the dragon tatoo"?

  • The best movie I have ever seen, and I have seen a lot of movies, some titles you can't even rent or buy anymore.

  • great movie del Maestro Bernardo Bertolucci ...

  • FUCKING Communist party who ruin Russian empire and Chinese empire

  • The Chinese Empire was "ruined" a long time before the CCP came around.

  • Your are Russian so?

  • there is nopt other title of the opening song just the main theme the last emperor

  • this movie is so deep !

  • Does anybody know the name of the song at the beginning???

I have always tried to look for the name of this song and never can find it... well the song at the beginning.

  • now, i havent receive any message with the name of the song, yet... but perhaps we should ask ARTISAN who probably made this clip. they should now, I hope.

  • El Juanshiz Mijas HAHA

  • a really good movie! loved it! :D

  • Does anybody know what is the first music's title? It's too beautiful..

  • this beat blue velvet. damnit.

  • I wanna see the film. And Amadeus too

  • Good choice! This movie is VERY good. But Amadeus, Amadeus is sheer art. I swear that movie is like poetry on film

  • Yeah I liked Amadeus too

  • Available on videocassette, the way it was intended to be seen.

    LOL!

Beautiful cinematography, interesting story. One of those movies worth having in hi def.

  • puyi was stated in history he was the last emperor of china

  • Fedor is the last emperor

  • The Qing Dynasty became highly integrated with Chinese culture. The Manchus adopted the Confucian norms of traditional Chinese government in their rule of China proper. Much of stuff Manchu were occupy China with Chinese thinking, writing, and Technologies to rule China!! The Manchu have blinded into the Chinese society in order to maintain the Qing Empire! That's why Manchu call it Qing Empire, means "pure","clear" or "pellucid"

  • one of the best movies ever

  • a masterpiece of vittorio storaro

  • the first song, the title, pleaseeeee !!!

  • i also want to know the name of the songs, so beautiful..

  • @mackanmodh the song that is playing in the movie is if i never knew you from the disney movie Pocahontas it was cut from the movie in theaters but on the 10 anniversary dvd it was put back in

  • My favourite movie...I always wrote this is my fave movie in my Facebook and friendster. I've wacthed that 12 times and I got the soundtrack, and the original 20th anniversary edition DVD. But, again, I still would love to wacth it again some time. I guess for a timeless masterpiece..you don't have limit to wacth it...

  • stop trolling lmao

  • What song is playing between eight seconds and thirteen seconds?

  • what of the best movie ever.

  • This movie wasn't intended for people with attention deficit disorder. You need to stick with the blow-em up explosion packed movies.

  • wow this movie is amazing, detailed in historical facts, good ending, and just like a piece of Chinese artifact

  • This is an Epic 80's Movie!....Luv it

  • I am proud to be a Chinese Canadian !

  • What do you know about "shitty"?. Now, shut up and tune in to High School Musical instead.

  • What are you talking about deanriam? 1987 was a good year in films. That year produced some of the most memorable films ever made including Empire of the Sun, Hope and Glory, Fatal Attraction, Moonstruck, Cry Freedom and a lot more.

  • I've seen Empire of the Sun. It was amazing. Did you know that Christian Bale was the little British kid?

  • damn, thanks for that bit of info. i used to love that movie as a kid, i had no idea the kid was C. Bale

  • Empire of the Sun was a decent movie, but it was typical Spielberg. Not even close to The Last Emperor.

  • ah, the tale of the 60 year old pet cricket!

  • Vhs, the way it was intended to be XD

  • oh tell me about it

  • A masterpiece.

  • this film deserved every oscar it won

  • could anybody tell whats the first song. it is very important for me...

  • it must be an amazing film. i cant wait to see it!

  • nevermind the pagemaster theme, i remember when he climbs the book stairs, a really crappy movie that i enjoyed somewhat as a young kid.

  • yeah whats the second song here?

  • i bought the dvd. It is a great film i love it.

  • so finally get to watch this movie, i can truely say that everything in about this movie is perfect. one of the best film ever made. i have know and love bertolucci films but never saw this one till now, and wow, i was blown away. hope he makes more movies.

  • where did you find it? tell me! please I ant to watch this so bad!!!

  • The late, great Gene Siskel praised this film no end.

  • I read the book THE LAST EMPEROR by Albert Brachman, on which the movie is based. PuYi was nothing like the character in the portrayed by John Lone; he was immature, inarticulate, spoiled, and lazy. He didn't leave the Forbidden City until he was in his 20's because he was too naive.

Reginald Johnson was the opposite of Peter O'Toole's portrayal, his goal was to try and make him a British puppet. He may also have taken sexual advantage of PuYi.

  • it is... yes, true!

  • China have been through a history of suffering and tribunal. Let us not be too quick to judge their political agenda and rather understand that they have a need to re-instate their pride as a nation, as the decendents of the ancient middle kingdom. LOng live the emperor, the lord of ten thousand years, Aishintero Pu Yi, THE LAST EMPEROR!

  • Great movie, very hard to find!

  • Criterion's re-releasing it as a special edition on a 4-disc set

  • Anyone know the two songs played in the trailer?

  • i could be wrong, but the second song sounds like part of the score to pocahontas (disney, 1995). i've been trying to figure this out for a while too - that song is used in lots of trailers, and i believe it is related to the song "if i never knew you" by alan menken, from pocahontas. i could be wrong though, if i am then the two are very very similar!

  • It sounds like the score to 'Pocahontas' and it even sounds a bit 'Glory', but I don't believe that it is either. I read somewhere that it may be written by Harry Gregson-Williams, but I don't know what score. If ANYONE knows what score this trailer is from, I would be very grateful as it has driven me crazy for years!

  • I am 99.9% sure it is from the pocahontas movie, having just watched it. Variations are heard throughout the pocahontas movie, including a vocal ballad. It is used in two disney dvd trailers: Cinderella and Bambi. Oddly enough, the full swell of the "pocahontas love theme" is hard to catch in the film itself. It could have very well been cut from the film and used for trailers.

  • One other possibility is that the version heard in the trailer was re-done just for movie trailers like the theme from Requiem for a Dream was re-done for trailers.

  • @bagpipe22 it is from pocahontas its from a song called if i never knew you it was cut in the final film but for the 10 anniversary dvd it was put back in

  • Found Criterion version at Best Buy for $60 and Fry's Electronics for $45... Theatrical and extended version plus 4 Documentary films...

  • the greatest movie ever made!
