@MoveOverCasanova There is humor. That guitarist is funny. :) On occasion you can catch a smile creeping across Tony's face as well. Apparently he was in the middle of recording We Can't Dance at this time, so maybe they were pressed.
Not a fan of the verse sections, but the chorus makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck. Tony has always been superb at bringing a dramatic feel, even to a pop song like this. It's rare to get that same effect from listening to most of Mike and Phil's solo albums. And I'm not knocking them, just saying I think Tony's better at it, that's all.
this surely cannot be the same tony banks that wrote the lamb lies down on broadway supper's ready and watcher of the skies??? jesus christ the 80s was a dangerous pandemic and it hit everyone even gods of prog rock
Yes, it's the same Tony Banks. And while this song doesn't match those, it's not bad. There's nothing wrong with the occasional pop song, and this is a pretty decent one. In fact, I'd say this album is perhaps Banks' best solo album, though I also like The Fugitive (which was also basically pop). Of course 70s Genesis was great too, but I can't blame Tony for trying different things.
Haven't watched this video since "Genesis: Opening Night." Had a tape of the "opening night", but lost it while I was moving. Thanks for posting me some memories.
This is a very cute song, endearing even, when you read through the lyrics. It sounds simple, but the harmonies really aren't, they change a lot through the song. It was one of the first songs that got me into Banks' solo work. :)
One comment about this video, though. Given the synthesized nature of this song I think it's pretty dumb that they show T.B. at a grand piano. They should have put him behind his rack of keyboards a la Rick Wakeman and it would have made a lot more sense.
I still remember the day I walked into an Indie music store in the Minneapolis suburbs back in '92 or '93 when this album was brand new, seeing the 5 copies they had in the rack and lighting up like a Christmas tree. I loved "The Fugitive" and had very high hopes for this effort. I was not disappointed. I would rank this album up there with some of Steve Hackett's more experimental works as one of the finest Genesis solo projects ever made. This song is so singable and catchy it's nuts.
Wow, haven't heard this one for quite a long time. Neither did I realize at the time that it's a Tony Banks song but it figures: a great melody that almost sounds too simple yet with sophisticated harmonies -- just beautiful! Btw: Also a nice video & great lyrics.
he has proved to be a great musician in his solo career too· He might not be a top selling artist, but he has composed great melodies worth listening·
I saw this video like once on tv, not even the whole thing, just a snip of it referencing the solo careers of the genesis members. the song is great, thanks for posting it.
Gabriel is brilliant, but I can't handle the old Genesis with him anymore. He was such a fruitcake with all the stupid Victorian Mysticism. When Phil took over on voice, Genesis became more of a BAND. Before that it was Peter Gabriel (o yeah, and the rest of Genesis...).
This is probably not the best song on the album "still",but even on a bad day banks is a better songwriter/musician than most of his Prog-rock contemporaries. His best work can be heard on Genesis albums eg. Their masterwork - The Lamb Lies down on Broadway; Selling England by the Pound;Trick of the Tail and many others . He is a surprisingly humble and self-effacing man not really at home, it would seem ,in the world of popstar wankers.
Of course the man isn't animated. This is course, Tony Banks. Out of every keyboard player I've ever heard, he is probably the master of all inversions of all chords. The song sounds simple, but changes keys several times and early music soloing over difficult time sigs. This guy isn't as flashy as Rick Wakeman, but an absolute genuis of a song writer. Check out the solo of "The Cinema Show". If he wants a solo career, so be it. He wasn't just part of Genesis, he is Genesis.
En This is Love veo a una mujer desnuda metida dentro de una maqueta, aquí veo otra disfrazada de pollo... A Tony le gusta ridiculizar a las mujeres????? ja ja ja ja ja...
Tony Banks is a really odd guy. He's a pianist and songwriter first (he has said this more than once in interviews) and he also finds performing on stage etc. not that enjoyable. Yeah, he looks wooden and non charismatic because HE IS. He is not, and never has been, a "performer" but he still tried to push a solo career. No doubt the guy is a genius but the choices he made for a lot of his solo work seem bizarre.
It's very strange that Tony sits and plays the grand piano on this video when he actually plays the keyboard. I have never heard a grand piano sounds like this:)
I think this album is the best Tony ever did from his own solo career.
Please watch my videos as well! Search for Alexander Orest
Fuck you, man! Tony Banks is awesome! He is a highly concentrated pianist who doesn't need to act like a fool to be recognized! He has pure skill and that's all he needs!
Okay, this was supposed to be a reply to Thebrodiebruce's comment (about how Tony only needs his skill and doesn't have to be a showman) below. Sorry about that.
My opinion, Tony is a genuis. He picked a bad singer here. He has no charisma. That's a mistake. That being said, Tony created the "Band-Genesis and he's still there". That means he's allot better than me. I don't like this song, due to the singer. I don't like the Phil/Peter comments. They both r great,& totally diff.
Having said that , of what I've heard of his solo stuff Raincloud has a killer hook- part of the problem is his complete lack of pretension, something the knuckle-draggers will find hard to take. But they're all idiots anyway.
Taken as it is - a song that I have heard once only - it's great! I'll feel qualified to knock it when I can do better. It may take a while! A Curious Feeling was indeed a vastly underrated album (so was A Fish Out of Water by Chris Squire) I wonder how Genesis would have sounded with Nik at the microphone and Phil on drums post-Gabriel. Hmmmm....
Why do you have so much negativity, disrespect and bias? By the way, I object to being called anything with the word "shite" in it. My comment was not disrespecting PC, nor lauding PG, unless you chose to read it that way.
Oh man, you are so wrong: Gabriel has more interpretative depth than Collins, and then went off to his really important solo carrier, opened the world to worldmusic if I may, created new sound, new feelings. He did the right thing. Collins stood on his shoulders and the rest of Genesis to develop his own successful (far more commercial, remember Tarzan) career, and to develop his voice and his compositional skills. Hurray to both in their own way.
I love the concept of this video, very few artists put
any thought into the videos anymore. The words in this song are also unique,If this is a pop song how come they never played it on the radio? If you really listen to it,it's got a lot more going on.
I agree with the fans who say Tony can't really do pop - that's why so many of his solo albums are so weak, he's trying to be someone he's not. But check out 'A Curious Feeling' - it's between 'And then..' and 'Duke' in style. Very good.
Have to agree to the sceptics, I'm afraid... This doesn't even compare to what TOny did in Genesis... A great mystery to me... Guess the system is indeed bigger than the sum of the parts... NOthing beats the Genesis chemistry!
Well, the thing is that the system is bigger than the sum of the parts.......Mostly in this case with the Banks personality, and his lacks of vocals....Who would say that the Beatles were better separate than together? In my opinion, nothing that they did solo could compare with their work as The Beatles....the only thing that helped them was their personalities, adn that they all could sing..........Thanks so much for sharing this material, I love Tony a lot !...
I agree with kharlamych. I'm a big Tony Banks fan, and seeing it for the first time I have to remind myself that this song was made in 1990/1991. The video is ok, but I still love the music itself.
oops i guess it is, Nick K i mean.........boy this sucks, poor tony. makes me wish for Wind and Wuthering material. Genesis just needs to reform with all original members, do one massive tour, make a ton of money (at least in Europe they'll make money) and happily retire. It would most definately be THE holy grail of rock reunions.
I've never, ever understood why Tony Banks tried to make solo pop albums. The guy, by his own admission, is uncomfortable 'on show'. Still cool to see this vid - thanks!
tony banks looks so desperately "what am i doing here" --all he needed was a bit more humor in the presentation, and maybe a better song
