I don't get why people will brake in this situation. Wet road, falling tree, can't stop in time, they're under it, don't brake, FLOOR IT.

I get idiot's get on the brake's when I start to overtake on the way to and from work all the time. Start to pull out to pass (on a straight road and no oncoming traffic) and they brake. Just plain dangerous. Nearly hit one once cause he braked hard enough. Always backpackers though.

You're an idiot. The lights were flashing orange, which in NZ means that the driver can proceed through the intersection provided it's safe. He obviously didn't think his car was in any danger, or he wouldn't have gone through.

I suggest you brush up on NZ law, or stay in the US.

Some Facts:

Nelson is the best city in NZ by far.

This storm was more severe because it came from the East, a very rare event in Nelson, usually its North West or South West. The highest wind recorded was 160 K's

The city Fire Brigade got 81 call outs to storm damage, mostly lifting roofs.

The city had 300 established trees blown over. Plus thousands of shrubs, small trees etc. A forestry plantation north of the city lost 90% of their trees.
