A year or 2 ago there was this protest music special on PBS. It was hosted by Chuck D., for whom I have mad respect. And would you believe it.... GSH received NO mention at all! Zero! And with Chuck D. as a host--who so often quoted him in PE's stuff?! (I know Chuck didn't script the show.... but DAMN. You'd think he'd refuse to host it with no mention of Gil.) This poem is about the lack of affordable health care. It's also prophetic. After all the years since Gil wrote this poem, one of the major crisis in our country today is still a lack of affordable health care. This problem is not race specific. It's an equal opportunity tragedy .

I'm not black, but I'm poor and I work hard ten hours a day six days a week, and I'm having a hard time finding the words to express my disappointment that the first four comments I read on one of my favorite gil scott-heron poems were white apologists imputing racism and unwarranted laziness to blacks. This poem can be viewed from two perspectives. It can be viewed as an indictment against White Americans for their efforts to pool resources to explore the moon OR it can be viewed as a window in on the futile outlooks of those trapped in urban poverty. We all appreciate the feat of space travel but it is far more enjoyable on a full stomach instead of an empty one... I believe that's his point. Peace.

Without getting into a back and forth argument regarding GSH's poem/song, I would like to calmly clarify his words and also rebut your comments in 308 characters or less: GHS was simply/poetically describing his plight in a world that found it more important to get a man to the moon than to care for it's own inhabitants. In retrospect, we see that getting to the moon never amounted to much anyway. But, our starving American citizens still died starving. BTW GSH is dead! No need to rant to him!
@SLAM234 Also, lets consider the following - a record number of banks have recently closed down, the government has spent stimulus money on companies which were large AND unsuccessful (Ford took no bailout money, but now Crysler and GM have an artificial advantage in exchange for cutting jobs and wasting $), and many banks were involved in the auto-foreclosure scandal. Also, intercity mostly non-white areas, almost no housing exists, so rent soaks up a lot of money from the economy and families.

It can be viewed as an indictment against White Americans for their efforts to pool resources to explore the moon OR it can be viewed as a window in on the futile outlooks of those trapped in urban poverty. Without getting into a back and forth argument regarding GSH's poem/song, I would like to calmly clarify his words and also rebut your comments in 308 characters or less: GHS was simply/poetically describing his plight in a world that found it more important to get a man to the moon than to care for it's own inhabitants. In retrospect, we see that getting to the moon never amounted to much anyway. But, our starving American citizens still died starving. BTW GSH is dead! No need to rant to him!

@SLAM234 Also, lets consider the following - a record number of banks have recently closed down, the government has spent stimulus money on companies which were large AND unsuccessful (Ford took no bailout money, but now Crysler and GM have an artificial advantage in exchange for cutting jobs and wasting $), and many banks were involved in the auto-foreclosure scandal. Also, intercity mostly non-white areas, almost no housing exists, so rent soaks up a lot of money from the economy and families.
