"Captain Crazy" Fulton Kuykendall was the old-fashioned, blood-and-guts guy among the linebackers. He found a way to get to the ball carrier, and was a competitor and a big hitter. While playing the run was his strong suit, being 6-5 had its advantages against the pass in zone coverages. Above all, he was rugged, and his consistency and powdering tackles returned valuable dividends to the Falcons. He was highly intense and willing to play with pain.
I've contended for a long time that William Andrews is perhaps the most underrated/overlooked RB of all time. Just look at his stats both rushing and receiving, plus throw in the fact that he was a terrific blocker himself. I'm a Bengals fan, so it's not as if I'm playing homer either. And Joel Williams was a really standout LB from that team that is slighted historically.
William Andrews was so effective operating out of a 1-back offense. He could block, catch, run with power & a little wiggle. He was a hard runner but not the typical straight-line FB. What made him excellent were acceleration, feel, sidestep ability & 2nd effort. He was not flashiest but ranked with the best. He would not turn corner like Dorsett or Billy Simms & had 2 dish out more punishment than other greats to gain yards. He had strong legs, was difficult to get off his feet,& rarely fumbled.
FS Tom Pridemore had a career year in 1981, and being a hard-hitter in on 12-15 tackles a game his 1st few years had taken its toll. He was a smart tough player with limited speed and not a whole lot of range at safety. He was not the student of the game, either, that his teammate #36 Glazebrook was,but Pridemore did have the instincts to play a decent center fielder at FS.
agreed. he only played 6 full seasons and still got his number retired. he was a beast at auburn and with falcons. i still regard him as one of the best
I still have a few of these glasses - Jeff Van Note, Fulton Kuykendall (Captain Crazy was one of the best defensive players in the franchise history!) and Kenn. These guys were a good team - just missing a few parts.
I really think they were a great team. The Falcons were just about the only NFC team that rattled the Cowboys during the late 70s, and early 80s. I remember after the 1978 playoff game, Tom Landry said how much he admired them.
@panzerschnott Are you high? I'm going to consider late 70's through early 80's to mean 1977-1983. They only played the Cowboys twice in that time frame and Dallas won both games in the playoffs. Check out what the Eagles, 49ers, Redskins, etc did to Dallas. I think your sipping a little too much Kool Aid out of the Falcon jug. "Just about the only team that rattled the Cowboys?" Give me a break.
Actually your the idiot if you also subscribe to the notion that "the Falcons were just about the only NFC team that rattled the Cowboys during the late 70's, and early 80s." That's simply not true. The Falcons were only 1 of 4 NFC not to register a win against Dallas from 1977-1983. The 79' Rams rattled them, so did the 80' Eagles, 81' 49ers, 82 Redskins, and 83' Rams. Yet some how in your world the Falcons were the cat's azz against Dallas? Your only kidding yourself.
i love tha atlanta falcons since 1981, i dont know how tha time has been changed, i dont like the new uniform, and unless the stadium, but i still loving the falcons, Mexican Fan form monterreym mx mauricio god bless the falcons

William Andrews had the potential to be one of the leagues all time backs until his career ending injury.
This was one hell of a football player!!!
Thanks William for what you gave us!

William Andrews is my all-time favorite player. Had he not busted his knee, he was going to be one of the best ever.

I was 9 years old and a huge Falcons fan in 1982. Needless to say, this commercial fills me with that warm 'n' fuzzy nostalgic feeling.
