I had a history teacher once that was a Marine and Vietnam veteran. He said that when he went for his haircut the barbers had blood on their aprons becuase they were trained to do it so fast they would often cut open bumps on the recruit's head.
This scene hooked me immediately. Such a masterpiece. This is among Kubricks best, along with Paths of Glory and sheesh I can't even recall the others.
When I went through Navy bootcamp, our CC's woke us up and "politely" introduced themselves. We then went to chow (we felt like this was our last meal before our execution), then got our haircuts. That is the first step in stripping you of your individuality. Everybody will have the same appearance.
The genius of this intro is that it likens the plight of these kids to a death row inmate who is getting prepped for the electric chair. I can't help but think that Kubrick made such a connection.
"the genius of this intro is that it likens the plight of these kids to a death row" pffff...shit, theyre just getting shaved in order to start their training. how can it be death row if they signed up, i know some prisoners are allowed to join the corps instead of doin time but are not allowed to quit. lol death row good one man. i dont believe in god or anything but good luck n appreciate all marines. my big bro is a corpsman in afghanistan, soon after i get my BA in nursing il be a medic.
"They signed up???" HAHA! Hey dude, I don't know how old you are, but in case they didn't teach you this in school, most of the guys who went to 'Nam didn't "sign up". Ever heard of draft cards? Many of them were burned. You see, there were these giant demonstrations, college campus riots, tear gas, etc. It was an era called the late 60's early 70's. Google it. Fuck sake man, you'll make a great Jarhead.
You KNEW some prisoners who were allowed to join instead of doing time.... them days are loooooong gone my friend. Back in 1967-68 when this took place enlisting was as good as signing your own death warrant.
Watched this the day before i left for parris island myself, the song was stuck in my head the whole 3 months

One of the few scenes where Kubrick couldn't shoot 100 takes although he probably wondered if there was an instant hair grow-back thing he could use.

Kiss me goodbye and write me while I'm gone
Goodbye my sweetheart, Hello Vietnam.
America has heard the bugle call
And you know it involves us one and all
I don't suppose that war will ever end
There's fighting that will break us up again
Goodbye my darling, Hello Vietnam
A hill to take a battle to be won
Kiss me goodbye and write me while I'm gone
Goodbye my sweetheart, Hello Vietnam.
