  • one of the greatest ever. thank you dame Janet. You made it to genius.

  • hihi könnte saltos schlagen so happy

  • perfecta!

  • Janet Baker reaches perfection in this song. Unsurpassed humility in a singer who wants to bring out the best of Schubert. Her approach, both musically and spiritually is one of the supreme artist. None of the typical singers' gestures or manerisms-just pure artistry.

Others would do well to learn from her.

  • The more I listen to this song. The more I fall in love with it.

  • TY Gabba02 for this great posting.

  • Nice rack.

    good voice too

  • She's pretty good...

  • Perahia on piano! Now that's class. And only what she deserved.

  • @bbbartolo -He may very well be the greatest living male pianist. Great comment.-especially for two greats on this superb collaboration.

  • Lieber Herr Jesus,

In Jesu Namen. Amen.

  • Gotta sing this tomorrow for my grade 6 ameb music exam

  • Ein tönendes Erz...

  • Mal compris...

  • 1 verse pretty much memorized & 1 more to go. Yo check out the kind of music I've gotta do in school.

  • Still like the Hotter version best of all...

  • I, like most people love this song,in my opinion this version is top class. beautiful.

  • Wonderful....

  • I just heard Wunderlich and Schwartzkopf sing this - left an appreciative comment on Schwartzkopf - and here comes Dame Janet who rises way above all others! Doesn't hurt that she has the incomparable Perahia at the piano - the king of Schubert piano. Now I understand those who found Schwartzkopf lacking in emotion - though it is really just that her rendition is a little understated compared to the surging feeling in this one.

  • @SebastianBach99 - I am so glad to hear you say what you have said. I have listened to Janet Baker sing this about 10 times and finally heard what you're hearing. I've coached this piece at least 100 times and have heard it sung well. BUT, after my 10th time with Janet Baker.....well, I'm a convert. And as a pianist I've never been a huge fan of Murray, but his playing and support of her phrasing are over the edge fantastic. See what one can learn after 53 yrs. of living!!! Thank you.

  • I favorited this! The lovely, unique Janet Baker, this beautiful Schubert lied - heaven. Thank you!

  • A pairing of artists made in heaven. TY for this great posting.

  • Ecco un altro esempio di COME si canta. Grazie.

  • Gosh, it's nice to see Murray again...or at least hear him.

  • If one knows this Schubert lied well, (and I have worked on it for a while now, ) you cannot help but applaud the superb and effortless musicianship which Dame Baker brings to this performance. I have the music before me and I marvel at how intimately and gracefully she has made this song her own. Breath support is incredible. Beautiful phrasing. How she has fully entered into the spirit of the song and sings, really, from inside the music! Thank you for posting this wonderful video.

  • Beautiful, get chills down my spine every time I hear her majestic, celestial voice. Brava, Dame Janet! (And Murray, too!)

  • Such precision singing is almost scary! Wonderful video :)

  • I was given this song to learn in lessons and I didn't think much of it at the start but now I absolutely love it!

  • Me too =)

  • A-R-T

  • Absolutely delightful

  • Does anyone know when this was recorded? It's obviously on the stage of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and it's Murray Perhaia accompanying. But, when?? Late 70s by the sound of the voice. She was and remains simply the greatest singer/musician who ever lived and I was so lucky to have been in London and been able to witness her greatness for more than 20 years. There was no one like This Dame!

  • i would have so loved to her on stage

  • to do... what to her on stage?

  • super!!!!!!!!!!! maravilloso!!!!!!!!!

  • I'm singing this for my singing teacher's concert - it's a lovely song!

.... any tips for memorising it?

    thanks!

  • Know what each and every word means, for starters.

  • Speak each word and learn the correct pronunciation next. Then add a slow melody and work up to the original rhythm. That's how my voice teacher helps me with it.

  • thanks guys :) my performances went well ty :D I'll definately try that tip out for my next song, brandnewviper79 :D

    xx

  • Very beautiful, thankyou Schubert Janet and Murray.

  • Anyone know what year this was?

  • GEORGE LONDON

  • I like this song, it's nice. I'm learning it on the piano as an accompaniement. Her voice is very opera. :P

  • Lovely. My first real exposure to Dame Janet. Nice job Murray! I was your taxi service using an old VW bug convertible in the middle of winter when you gave a recital at SUNY Fredonia (southwest of Buffalo) in the late 70's.

  • Nobody like Kathleen Ferrier....

  • sublime...thanks for the post.

I heard her live with Giulini in Los Angeles. She sang Nuits d'ete. It was unforgettable.

  • There is nothing like a Dame (Janet Baker, that is)

  • It's like the first time I hear the song. Brilliant.

  • Dame Janet Baker simply is, besides Christa Ludwig/alto, the best mezzo-soprano we ever had. This is real singing!

  • It's so nice to hear someone finally giving credibility to Christa Ludwig . Yes, Janet Baker was to die for, but when I think back on my mother "forcing" me to listen to Freni and Ludwig in Butterfly, somehow it doesn't seem like forcing any longer. Brava to Janet Baker and brava/o to you, dutchcub, for mentioning Ludwig. You're, in my opinion, someone who knows great singing when you hear it and should be applauded for it.

  • Thanks for the 'bravo' Hideaway3!

My father played Janet Baker and Christa Ludwig all the time. He always said: Remember these voices and names boy These ladies are the absolute top. I always remembered his words and the voices. I have all the records they made and have to say, that is all I need. Nowadays we have a lot of great singers but imho they never will reach the level of Christa Ludwig or Janet Baker.

  • Einfach WUNDERBAR!!!!!

  • unbelievable breath control wow. how can someone sing so SLOWLY and actually finish these lines in tune? wow, wow, wow.

  • My choir is singing this song. I love the words, they're so fun to say. Haha schlosen!

  • Encore!

  • Many thanks to the poster! Dame Janet is so dignified - her voice, her posture, her expression, all flawless. The accompaniment by Perahia is a jewel in itself, so delicate. From 2:17 when she sings Ich danke dir dafur, notice how her eyes alight with real feeling of joy and gratitude.

  • Fabulous performer! And equally perfect in English, German and French.

  • She is considered on of the most superb interpreters of lieder of her generation. Alongside the likes of Elly Ameling and Dietrich Fischer Dieskau.

  • Murray Perahia is a legend!

  • I can't believe no one mentioned the fabulous accompaniment by Murray Perahia!

  • this is amazing.Janet is one of the best mezzo's ever :) do you have more clips of this recital

  • I have found 4 more clips of this recital, all posted by our friend Gabba02 - thanks!

    Who is Sylvia? (marvellous!)

    Abendstern

    Die Junge None

  • She looks for the world like English royalty; not unlike the Jacobians, Hanovers, Saxe-Couberg, Battenbergs, as at home with German as with English

  • 唱的真好!!但她是唱什麼調呢??

  • I cannot hear this lied and still have dry eyes! Baker is perfect.

  • BRAVA!

this is very good! i really like this piece, and she sang it BEATIFULLY! brava!

  • Lovely!

  • That was great

  • I love Dame Janet Baker Shes Great!

  • Its not so simple!

    Have you ever sung it???

  • Yes,and it is one of his easier lieder !! I think!

  • oh please!!!

simple to sing badly perhaps - but to take a simple melody line, two verses great words, amazing range of dynamics and paint a beautiful picture - not so easy - i still try to sing it better every time i sing it - and see room for improvement - it makes for a perfect encore!

  • Bravo!!!!!! Perfectly done, just way too many musicians can't seem to get this simple song down.

  • Fantastic. Thanks.

  • What an inspiration her singing and this song is to me. Thanks!

  • She is the best.

    QED

  • Das Lied ist wunderschön, der Text ist es und die Stimme dafür ebenfalls. Selten eine passendere für dieses Stück gehört. Wundervoll.

  • I feel I've always known that voice. She talks to me in a manner I feel only I can understand.

She makes me at the same time selfish and full of love!

  • She is one of the great singer with "Das Lied "

This song is primary song of **"LIED" alubam by D.F.Deauskau.

**This is all of songs recording by him in the past.

  • Thank you for this Dame Janet post. For me, there was never anyone better.

  • My three favoutie versions of this are Dame Janets, Christa Ludwigs and then Victoria De Los angeles

  • Can you please post Christa Ludwig record of this Lied?

I would like to hear very much.

  • Try Kathleen Ferrier's. You'll not bother with the others then!

  • @bobdoney1

I totally agree. I am her fan forever. Ferrier is so (pardon the expression) "right on!"

  • "Du, holde Kunst, ich danke dir". Du holde Künstlerin ebenfalls. From the heart with no pretence.

  • Thanks for this post. I always search for as many different renditions of Schubert's lieder as possible. I like hearing different versions from different voices.. Thanks again.
