Janet Baker reaches perfection in this song. Unsurpassed humility in a singer who wants to bring out the best of Schubert. Her approach, both musically and spiritually is one of the supreme artist. None of the typical singers' gestures or manerisms-just pure artistry.
In Jesu Namen. Amen.
I just heard Wunderlich and Schwartzkopf sing this - left an appreciative comment on Schwartzkopf - and here comes Dame Janet who rises way above all others! Doesn't hurt that she has the incomparable Perahia at the piano - the king of Schubert piano. Now I understand those who found Schwartzkopf lacking in emotion - though it is really just that her rendition is a little understated compared to the surging feeling in this one.
@SebastianBach99 - I am so glad to hear you say what you have said. I have listened to Janet Baker sing this about 10 times and finally heard what you're hearing. I've coached this piece at least 100 times and have heard it sung well. BUT, after my 10th time with Janet Baker.....well, I'm a convert. And as a pianist I've never been a huge fan of Murray, but his playing and support of her phrasing are over the edge fantastic. See what one can learn after 53 yrs. of living!!! Thank you.
If one knows this Schubert lied well, (and I have worked on it for a while now, ) you cannot help but applaud the superb and effortless musicianship which Dame Baker brings to this performance. I have the music before me and I marvel at how intimately and gracefully she has made this song her own. Breath support is incredible. Beautiful phrasing. How she has fully entered into the spirit of the song and sings, really, from inside the music! Thank you for posting this wonderful video.
Does anyone know when this was recorded? It's obviously on the stage of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and it's Murray Perhaia accompanying. But, when?? Late 70s by the sound of the voice. She was and remains simply the greatest singer/musician who ever lived and I was so lucky to have been in London and been able to witness her greatness for more than 20 years. There was no one like This Dame!
Speak each word and learn the correct pronunciation next. Then add a slow melody and work up to the original rhythm. That's how my voice teacher helps me with it.
Lovely. My first real exposure to Dame Janet. Nice job Murray! I was your taxi service using an old VW bug convertible in the middle of winter when you gave a recital at SUNY Fredonia (southwest of Buffalo) in the late 70's.
It's so nice to hear someone finally giving credibility to Christa Ludwig . Yes, Janet Baker was to die for, but when I think back on my mother "forcing" me to listen to Freni and Ludwig in Butterfly, somehow it doesn't seem like forcing any longer. Brava to Janet Baker and brava/o to you, dutchcub, for mentioning Ludwig. You're, in my opinion, someone who knows great singing when you hear it and should be applauded for it.
My father played Janet Baker and Christa Ludwig all the time. He always said: Remember these voices and names boy These ladies are the absolute top. I always remembered his words and the voices. I have all the records they made and have to say, that is all I need. Nowadays we have a lot of great singers but imho they never will reach the level of Christa Ludwig or Janet Baker.
Many thanks to the poster! Dame Janet is so dignified - her voice, her posture, her expression, all flawless. The accompaniment by Perahia is a jewel in itself, so delicate. From 2:17 when she sings Ich danke dir dafur, notice how her eyes alight with real feeling of joy and gratitude.
simple to sing badly perhaps - but to take a simple melody line, two verses great words, amazing range of dynamics and paint a beautiful picture - not so easy - i still try to sing it better every time i sing it - and see room for improvement - it makes for a perfect encore!
Thanks for this post. I always search for as many different renditions of Schubert's lieder as possible. I like hearing different versions from different voices.. Thanks again.
one of the greatest ever. thank you dame Janet. You made it to genius.
