If we stop paying the BBC, then they will have even more advertising on it than sky. What gets me is that we all willingly pay for sky and the like, and willingly put up with a bombardment of adverts. we are paying to be advertised too.

And when you trawl your way through all the shite channels, you realise that the BBC is surprisingly the best value for money given the quality of the shows it produces. So to recap, its government propaganda for free or corporate advertising at a price.

@Lorddoucheington go to bbcamerica(dot)com and scroll to the bottom of the page ... i think you'll see a button that says 'advertise with us' if you go through the site you will also notice that the shows aired there are shows made here ......... so if they can advertise in usa... they can do it here too ... besides there is now law saying you have to pay.... acts and statutes are not law, they can only be applied by 'force of law' when consented to

@venuecam It's for real... A TV licence makes a mild sense if there is no adversising (like on BBC1 and BBC2), but it really doesn't make any sense to have it in Ireland or South Africa, which show a plethora of commercials.

It's double dipping so either throw your TV out and get a decent internet connection or stop watching it altogether. TV is for suckers (no offense to any of you who watch it but it is).

ugh rte wankers paying gerry ryan and pat kenny big saleries. in the uk the bbc get the fee which is less than the irish fee and look at the good shows and number channels they have bbc cant show adds either. rte show more ads than tv3 and bci has rules set that rtre cant show more than 5 minutes of adverts during a break, they sometimes last 8 minutes but bci and eamon ryan the gay bastard lets them away with it

We have to pay here(USA) for cable or satellite television..which was broadcast commercial free at the beginning. I pay $60 USA a month for basic cable, and it is mostly rubbish. The regular broadcast television is TOTAL rubbish..but its free. BUT...we are in the process of converting to digital broadcasting and doing away with analog. I wonder how long it will be before broadcast TV will be "jammed" in individual homes unless we,too,gt our license...

I believe the bbc is worth the license fee as they have produced some amazing programs, its shit for us Irish as we have to pay RTE for essentially producing shit programs and also overloading it with ads, I would gladly allow the bbc to annex RTE and make it something like BBC 2 Southern Ireland.

Arguments about the value of the BBC put aside, I can not understand why in this day in age it is the law that a person has to pay 135 quid, each year, just for watching a tv in his or her own home.

I think it is a grossly unfair and retarded system, especially for low income households.

I think it is time the BBC was either overhauled so it had alternative funding, or better still, it was got rid of.

I'm from Singapore and I don't need to pay for a tv licence. I mean that's the whole point of "free access tv" isn't it. My boyfriend though is Irish and I've never heard of such junk til he told me about it. I know I'd be moving over soon and wasn't pleased about it at all plus the hike up of prices? You have to pay every 12 months if you are plugging in and watching anything that's being broadcast, whether you have cable or not. You don't need a licence if you're only watching a DVD/VHS or playing on a games console.
