If we stop paying the BBC, then they will have even more advertising on it than sky. What gets me is that we all willingly pay for sky and the like, and willingly put up with a bombardment of adverts. we are paying to be advertised too.
And when you trawl your way through all the shite channels, you realise that the BBC is surprisingly the best value for money given the quality of the shows it produces. So to recap, its government propaganda for free or corporate advertising at a price.
if you get a summons from court just reply back saying... i will happily attend court so long as the BBC can provide 'proof of claim', an invoice for the alleged debt and the contract where it states i agreed to pay ... simple... becaus until they do the court cannot proceed as it's just 'heresay' until then
People who don't pay the license fee deserve to go to jail, they are so miserly they can't even contribute to one of the most amazing institutions in Britain.
The BBC provides us with so much - the news is impartial because its run by the government, and their dramas are of excellent quality (Dr. Who for example).
@Lorddoucheington go to bbcamerica(dot)com and scroll to the bottom of the page ... i think you'll see a button that says 'advertise with us' if you go through the site you will also notice that the shows aired there are shows made here ......... so if they can advertise in usa... they can do it here too ... besides there is now law saying you have to pay.... acts and statutes are not law, they can only be applied by 'force of law' when consented to
We pay a licence fee because the BBC does not do adverts? BOLLEX just watch episodes of Eastenders, 2 Pints or just about any other show on the BBC an list all the brand names that show up during the program. Were being ripped off
@venuecam It's for real... A TV licence makes a mild sense if there is no adversising (like on BBC1 and BBC2), but it really doesn't make any sense to have it in Ireland or South Africa, which show a plethora of commercials.
@shmuli9 it make no sense to watch TV when the UK has now introduced legislation to allow product placement in UK shows. It's double dipping so either throw your TV out and get a decent internet connection or stop watching it altogether. TV is for suckers (no offense to any of you who watch it but it is).
@venuecam Oh, it IS 'double dipping'. I wonder how soon one WILL have to either pay a 'computer tax' or 'pay for the priviledge' of watching things on platforms like 'YouTube'...
ugh rte wankers paying gerry ryan and pat kenny big saleries. in the uk the bbc get the fee which is less than the irish fee and look at the good shows and number channels they have bbc cant show adds either. rte show more ads than tv3 and bci has rules set that rtre cant show more than 5 minutes of adverts during a break, they sometimes last 8 minutes but bci and eamon ryan the gay bastard lets them away with it
We have to pay here(USA) for cable or satellite television..which was broadcast commercial free at the beginning. I pay $60 USA a month for basic cable, and it is mostly rubbish. The regular broadcast television is TOTAL rubbish..but its free. BUT...we are in the process of converting to digital broadcasting and doing away with analog. I wonder how long it will be before broadcast TV will be "jammed" in individual homes unless we,too,gt our license...
FYI for people who don't live in Rip Off Irelad! a t.v. license is just for owning a tv, not for any of the channels bar the 4 ''free'' ones which are absolute cack. And of course they are going to know you have a tv if signals from these channels are broadcast to your house which sucks
Do you know you dont have any police powers as you claim to have, as you think you caution people under The Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE). The occupants dont have to say or sign anything.
You can only obtain entrance to a property by invitation only.
You cannot force your way in to a property this would be trespassing.
TV licensing are true believers. Telly has it's own royalty, own sermons, has tremendous power over it's minions and is tyrannical toward non-believers, who it's thinks could not possibly exist. It's going down.
What do you get for your TV License? Jeremy Paxman £1,000,000 (7404 TV licenses), Fiona Bruce £500,000 (3703 TV licenses), Chris Moyles £640,000 (4666 TV Licences), Sarah Cox £200,000 (1481 Licenses for 2 shows) oooh and Russell brand, Andrew bloody Marr and James Bloody Nesbit...
@superpowerchina1 just stop watching TV. get a decent broadband connection, an IP blocker and watch all the shows etc you need... no license required.
I believe the bbc is worth the license fee as they have produced some amazing programs, its shit for us Irish as we have to pay RTE for essentially producing shit programs and also overloading it with ads, I would gladly allow the bbc to annex RTE and make it something like BBC 2 Southern Ireland.
Nobody I know pays the TV licence. Hardly any of them watches telly anyway, since today there are many alternate (and often better) entertainment and media sources than the BBC. It's total madness that the archaic licensing system still exists.
i dont even have tv yet i get letters through my door every 2 weeks labeling me a criminal! im tempted to wipe my arse wi them and send them back! im under no obligation to prove im innocent! where i come from your innocent until PROVEN giulty! the bbc can lick ma button!
Arguments about the value of the BBC put aside, I can not understand why in this day in age it is the law that a person has to pay 135 quid, each year, just for watching a tv in his or her own home.
I think it is a grossly unfair and retarded system, especially for low income households.
I think it is time the BBC was either overhauled so it had alternative funding, or better still, it was got rid of.
Well i blatently refuse to pay the goverments and bbc's £135 a year to the point were im actually in court at 2:15 pm today (18/12/2007) why should people be allowed dangerous dogs that have gone round killing and maming kids, and cyclists killing pedestrians be allowed to do so without a license ?? what damage can a tv do...oh well they aint gettin a penny outta me PRISON HERE I COME !!!
im from america where i get tv for free. its awesome this whole tv license thing is ubsurd if you ask me.i would just start downloading all your tv programs from your computer if i were you guys. or do you have to pay to own a comp to?
im studying in the UK and i find it ridiculous... i eventually called that service number and argued if watching TV is a right or a prestige. absurd service
Oh yes - and what about people who do not have a television real or imaginary and get threatening letters from the licensing saying that they will get a fine of £1K for not having a license!
I'm from Singapore and I don't need to pay for a tv licence. I mean that's the whole point of "free access tv" isn't it. My boyfriend though is Irish and I've never heard of such junk til he told me about it. I know I'd be moving over soon and wasn't pleased about it at all plus the hike up of prices? Anyhoos, you guys should demand some sort of a justification on why they need you to pay for a licence.
Are they not making enough money from sponsors and advertisers already? "If you want me to pay for something, I need to know why." I know I won't pay for it when I'm there too. Which is why I'm 'complaining' as well, I suppose.
Personally, I'm sick of all the rants about the licence fee because these may be some of the same people who rant about ITV's Formula 1 coverage for instance being constantly interrupted by ad breaks and then pleading for F1 to return to the BBC.
More inane adverts and equally inane programme sponsorships? No thnks, I'd rather live in Britain and not the 51st State of America. Mike S.
You have to pay every 12 months if you are plugging in and watching anything that's being broadcast, whether you have cable or not. You don't need a licence if you're only watching a DVD/VHS or playing on a games console.
"Is is worth the embarrasment?" This is a load of bullshit. If I knew somone who didn't pay their Tv Licence, I'd applaud them for giving a big middle finger to those awful ads.
eh,actually they dont.you dont have to open your door to them;you dont have to answer their questions;you dont have to give them your name;they cant enter your private property without a search warrant(which is almost impossible to obtain).even if they see a tv set on they cannot prosecute you if they haven't got enough evidence to give in court.the people with the most power here in ireland are actually the customs(them fuckers dont even need search warrants;SCARY OR WHAT?)
are you serious???? so if they id themselves and i slam the door on there face cant they put some fine through the door or call the guards or anything??? i got a fucken form of them today saying i havnt got one registered with them, so if the prick calls what do i do, dont give m e bad advise lol i dont need trouble , especially b4 Christmas.
I'd treat them like I'd treat a window salesman. "Here about the TV license" What I then like to do is say, "Ok hang on a sec" Close the door ....... see how long they take to piss off.
What a sad advert and the even sadder thing is people really believe rubbish like that. If the TVL knock on your door you just dont answer or speak to them. These are salemen who work for Capita and have as much power as my little finger
To be honest defiant 1337, if u watch again! Thats meant to be the the person living up stairs in the block of flats that answers the door and your man is running to door to make sure that no one answers...but its too late she has it answered and the lads are caught by the balls!
Sorry your wrong. They would only be in trouble if they let the salemen into their flat and starting talking to him. You see unless they have some evidence the Capita salemen can't do doddoli so they just go off in a huff looking for commision from some other mug ;)
Oh a fan of everyone being forced to find his/her television. Listen they are saleman employeded by Capita on behalf of the BBC. They get commision on top of a basic wage. Oh on another note I've never paid the BBC (18yrs) and never will
@mygeebox I know your comment is from years back but: grabbing someone by the balls is sick, twisted, and perverted, and is sexual assault... and even if you answer the door, you DO NOT HAVE TO SAY ANYTHING UNLESS YOU WISH TO DO SO. So say fuck all and close the door again
