  • Actually, the P-43 Lancer is the direct predecessor of the P-47. The Seversky AT-12 is the predecessor of the P-35.

    So: AT-12 --> P-35 --> P-43 --> P-47. :)

  • There is not any Seversky P-35 in the world?

  • @bompiberlot I am pretty sure there is a Seversky P-35 at the Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio!

  • I have an av mag showing this type of machine being demod in the UK and getting banged up...

  • 2 seater P-35! Beautiful ship!!

  • does it have a wright r-1830?

  • @SgtGrant23 This aircraft has a Pratt & Whitney R-1830 engine.

  • @octane130 nothing better than a R-1830.

  • This aircraft is not a japp survivor.

It was orderd by the swedish airforce as a Divebomber/lightbomber ,52 was orderd but only 2 was deliverd the rest stayed in US as trainers .

  • only one of a kind in the world. very rare airplane.

  • shes a beauty. How many survive ? history?

I'd really love to see the ww2 japan surviving aircraft. They seem never to get enough coverage. any leads ?

  • y'know...i love your video's they're awesome and you're always super correct technically in your descriptors - but in this case i had to make a correction.

It just didn't sound like the R-1820. And the cowl suggested a 'DC-3' shape....or Twin Wasp look.

The firing pattern didn't sound like the 'Harley Davidson-esque' R-1820...

so i had to do some research.

It's an R-1830-45...without turbosuperchargers and the like to 'cool' the sound.

  • juzzi07: You are absolutely correct, the engine is a 14-cylinder, Pratt & Whitney R-1830. Thanks! The unturbocharged, staccato sound threw me off. Models of this type of plane also did use the 9-cylinder Wright R-1820. It is not often you hear an R-1830 without the muffling effect of an exhaust-driven turbocharger (such as on a B-24). This engine displays a data plate that says: "U.S. Air Force Type R-1830 92" plus the serial number. That's all. Thanks again!

  • no probs i was put off by the note too. There's so many variants of the R-1830 out there...i'm in Australia and we have a few restored CAC Boomerang fighters - complete with an R-1830 mated to a huge supercharger (it howls) and porcupine exhaust stacks. Once again...the sound changes completely!

  • that's an unusual engine note - what kind of engine did it run?

  • My previous, erroneous comment as to the engine type has been deleted. As juzzi07 says below, the engine is a Pratt & Whitney R-1830.

  • Nice! From this predecessor of the thunderbolt One can actually see the P47 lines in this pre war design.

  • Mmmm, what a magnificent airplane -how good does it look in that pre-war bare metal and USAAF markings?

And that lumpy radial sound is like music..

  • Schweet!

  • @thnksno Not bad for a guy with a false leg!
