What a joke. This has been available in Canada for over 10 years for summer training. Its much slower than natural ice and very e xpensive , depending on the size of the sheet.
This would be nice for people who just skate for fun, not for a sport. for people who actually pursue the sport and need to practice real jumps and have good skates (and I'm pretty sure this plastic stuff would RUIN my expensive blades) it's definitely not a good substitute.
Great but hardly new. At least as far back as 1999 there have been a plastic surface ice skating ring of 800m2 in Gérardmer in FR, open to the public.
When I visited it the plastic surface reminded me of the sort of plastic of a kitchen cutting board. With proper sharpened skates you could skate as fast as on ice.

Where do you summer train? We use actual ice all year round... I've never heard of summer camps in Canada using this Iceless Ice during the summer.

But how the heck would you do a toe jump?
bobtraver 3 years ago
...But you cannot do jumps at all on these surfaces. Surefire way to break your pick or your ankle if you do try.

is that good for your blades?
what is the "ice" made of?
jessikavee 3 years ago
The commentator said it was a petro-chemical rink (ie. oil based).

I heard that, but I'm just wondering what the effect is on the blades. The blades alone are sometimes close to $1000.00..
