@ElephantsOnStilts Thanks man. I was really happy with the way it sounds on a normal guitar too. I played this song once on my brother's baritone though, and it kicked my ass!! Baritone gives you some amazing low-end tones that I never really appreciated until I played one. If only they were about half as expensive!
@Bucci885 Yeah true! lol. I would record and learn this, but everything I upload never gets good feedback 'cause I don't have the proper recording equipment yet, still waitingfor it in the mail. Keep up the good work! :)
I love that you are playing this amazing song on a 114ce. I have two Taylor 110e guitars. I was going to buy the 310e, but I actually thought the 110 sounded better. You don't need a $4000 guitar to sound good. A BMW is still a BMW and the 1 series of Taylors is great.
@themfc YEAH MAN!!! I freakin love the 100 series! When I bought this guitar, the 114ce sounded better to me than a lot of the other Taylors worth hundreds more. They're great guitars, and this one is a perfect match for me.
@TylerH2055 yeahhhhh!!! Taylor 114ce kicks ass man! Great value for one of the cheaper Taylors! I think it may actually be time for me to get an upgrade though... We'll see!
@MrEroticcakes Hey man, no problem. I used a pretty basic M-Audio Fast Track Ultra as the "tone port", and the mics I used were an NT-2, and NT-4, along with the direct line-in to my Taylor Guitar (a 114ce). The mixing interface that was used is Cubase. My brother did the mixing/mastering, so my knowledge on that aspect of the recording is limited, but all post-recording work was done in Cubase (mixing, EQs, mastering, adding effects like reverb etc.)
I love how you keep the same tone of the song with a different tuning! So amazing! You are on par with the man himself! You should post your own songs! :-)
@TheTouristArrives Hey man, thanks for the kind words. I have posted 3 of my own songs (or at least current versions of them). One of them is posted in the video responses section of this page.
@Hairs626 Thanks for the compliment! Always appreciated! I don't mind sharing my equipment at all. I used a Rode NT-4 microphone and a Rode NT-2 microphone, along with a direct line-in to my Taylor 114ce. It was then mixed and mastered through Cubase. This process took the better part of a day but I was pretty happy with the sound quality!
very solid cover, some parts the left hand hammer ons were like a 16th noted delayed. also the melodic hammeron/pull offs can be a little bit clearer. just dropping some constructive criticism :]
btw, i've been using this video as a jump off of learning the song, then referred to the little bit on the Joyland dvd for more of the details.... thanks!
@supern00b Definitely, I appreciate the comments! I definitely agree that the hammer on/pull-offs could be clearer. That part is probably the hardest for me!
Glad to hear that this video has been of help to you starting to learn the song. At some point soon (late April / early May), I plan to record a tutorial video for this tune. I've had a bunch of requests, so I think I'm just gonna sit down one day and just do it.
I started learning this and I can't understand what I'm supposed to do in a certain part.
After the first pluck, there is a muted note or something, then you strum the harmonics. On the muted note, the tab says use your thumb, but I don't see anyone using their thumb on that note. Thanks for any help!
@CandyRat10 Hey man, I took a look at the tab to see what you were talking about and you're right - it does say to use your thumb to mute a note. That's not what I did - I just played what I heard. I'm hitting a 12th fret harmonic on the 6th string, then a 12th fret harmonic on the 4th string and then the string of harmonics on the 2nd-5th strings while trying to get a percussive slap hitting that chord. Let me know if this makes sense or not.
@Bucci885 This makes sense! I tried this in a video and it seems to sound pretty close to yours. I do this before the 7th fret harmonic strum also if that's correct. Very helpful and you still have the best Blue Liquid cover on YouTube.
great cover. i bought the tab book for this myself but i was wondering what tuning did you use in your cover? i feel like the actual tuning of the song is ridiculous lol
@racketman90 Hey man, I took the baritone tuning that was in the tab book and transcribed it up to a normal guitar. I think that came out to F, G#, A#, D#, G, A#.
@patero77 Hi Agustin. The tuning is F, G#, A#, D#, G, A#. Unfortunately, I don't have a digital copy of the tabs - I purchased the tab book from Andy. I would highly recommend it though. There are so many amazing songs that it's worth the $20!
@JAKE887 I bought the actual tab book. To my knowledge, Andy hasn't posted the tabs on the candyrat website or his own personal website. The tab book for Joyland was about $20 and was worth every penny.
@mattitjahu wow, that's certainly high praise. Thanks! Glad that you found inspiration to learn this tune. its definitely a doozie and one that you can NEVER get tired of playing! I used to be in a band, but we never took it seriously. I don't normally play gigs (probably cuz I only have one original right now!)... just a few small open mics / talent shows, which are always fun. Yeah maybe one day I'll post a tutorial... I've had a few people ask me for one... as soon as I can find the time!
@CandyRat10 Hey man, thanks for the comment. The guitar is a Taylor 114ce. Definitely the best Taylor you can buy under $1,000 in my opinion. The setup for this recording was two mics (NT-4 and NT-2) as well as the direct line-in. Obviously for the direct line-in, I relied on the guitar's pickups. Unfortunately the Taylor 114ce doesn't use the Taylor-ES system (I think it's only on Taylor guitars in the 300-series and above), but it still works out quite well!
This is great sir.
Thanks so much for your tutorial video too! It helped me a lot.
