When I lived in Mt. Shasta, there were tons of people who knew who they were, all the way down to Chico, even.

I've long heard they turned down a ton of major labels in order to keep control of their music. Otherwise they'd sound like every other pile of crap on the radio while raking in all those hollywood hits/dollars.

And, just like you say, talent isn't what gets it done in pop culture.
