I LOVE my iPhone 4 BUT! iPod SUCKS for MP3's I don't even put music on my iPhone. Why? In a word "iTunes" Downsides to iPods in General: 1. iTunes (whole other subject LOL) 2. no WMA support (has to be converted) 3. Price 4. Low 160GB Storage 5. Relys on proper MP3 Tags (No Folder Structure!) 6. No Radio! Really? 7. Earbuds Hurt! (how do you screw up on headphones for a music player?) 8. I could go on but I've run out of room :) So many good things about them, but these are unacceptable flaws
I know this video is a couple years old, but now Archos came out with a whole new line of 8th-Gen PMPs/Tablets running Android 2.2 including the 32 and the 43 which are amazing iPod Touch killers and the 70 and 101 which completely murders the iPad. If you want more for your money, and you don't wanna look like every other cock with an Apple product, look into Archos.
Archos 5 has a nice big 5 inch screen for watching movies. Supports a wide variety of formats. Let down by poor battery life. Poor ui. Browsing using wifi is just tedious. Sluggish!!
Get the iPod touch 4. Fast slim and sexy. Ok you have to convert files but that's easy to do and doesn't take long. It's a smaller screen but it's hi res and less eye fatigue.

it actually couldn't have been done with a simple firmware update because the iPod video doesn't have the hardware to support cover flow. not enough FLOPS.

I would rather pay a hefty price and have my freedom, quality and features, and get my moneys worth, than settle for the half-assed product that is popular merely because of its low price, and super-charged hype and fanbase. Open source is always a good choice, and any piece of hardware (in this case, the Archo) that allows the user freedom and the ability to modify and customize it all the way down to the OS and firmware its self, is a definite winner in my book. I like this response. I hate apple for the same reasons, overpriced and oversold. I got an itouch for my birthday, using it is like being in jail. Video needs to be converted, defeats the purpose of a media player. It's restricted in so many areas, you can only download through appstore. itunes, exactly what you said, bloatware.

I'm an Archos and iPod user. At the end of the day, all I really care about is being able to get videos on the device quickly for viewing. With Archos I can drag and drop divx/xvid videos DLed from peer to peer (or whatever) and play immediately. iPod requires video conversion and then iTunes (bleh). But, the phone market is changing fast...
My Palm Treo 750wx plays divx/xvid well, but the screen is small and sucky. BlackBerry Storm plays xvid, but not divx, whereas BlackBerry Bold plays xvid AND divx but, again, has a small screen. I think this is a conspiracy, but regardless, as it stands, Archos is, to date, the best PMP divx/xvid player, although those old Creative ones were OK and Cowon is awesome too.
Only thing I disagree with you on is the memory: small memory is due to flash, which is WAY better than HDD.
I would way rather have 32GB Flash than 160GB HDD. Archos brought out their 5th Gen with only 2GB Flash which is ridiculous, although it DID have a card slot, but still. Plus Archos is pissing me off with the plugins. Big cash grab. They do this with their stupid peripherals too. My old Archos Gmini (which I had WAY before apple had a video ipod (people used to stare)) can connect to tv with no peripherals and can even connect to my camera and other usb devices.
I have both the Ipod Touch and Archos 7, in my opinion the ipod touch does not even come close to the Archos 7. There are no limits to the Archos, Itunes will forever make Ipod products a piece of junk. Such a hassle using Itunes. Archos 7 is way worth the money.

Yeah well remember, PSP was made in 2005 and web browser was added on later in firmware 2.00 so it wasn't even planned for web browsing in the first place.
It's ok for basic stuff though, but whenever I would do any heavy web browsing on the PSP, I would always use this homebrew browser Links 2, using it, you can set it to use the memory stick to store data in while browsing to however much space you want so no more out of memory.

It can record in up to 2.5mb/s (DVD quality is 3.0mb/s, vhs is 1.0 mb/s) and I've never seen any lag with it, hell I often use it to record the video game footage for my other videos.
The Archos has a 4.3" 800x480 screen while the ipod touch has a 3.5" 480x320 screen. So the Archos does have a better screen hands down

When looking at that Cowon you talk about, honestly, I want one now, I'd trade my Archos for it in a second. The fact that it runs Windows CE man that's a big big plus in my book.
Now the Archos has up on the Cowon the fact that it has a much lower price per gigabyte and I don't think you can record tv on a Cowon. But since it's using Windows CE, I don't know if you can find some program to allow it to do that.
Just so you know, the Archos 7 is pretty big, the 7 means 7 inch screen so there you go. I don't know if you're wanting something smaller in which case go for the Archos 5.
Yeah I know what you mean. I'd love to get an Archos 5 and an Archos 7, but I flat out can't afford to buy both. If I was going to upgrade, I'd probably get an 5, just like how I got a 605 instead of a 705. But I don't think I'll be getting a new Archos for awhile. Yeah and I just heard that with the ipod touch, you have to connect it to itunes to go through the initial set-up. And that unless you have it modded, it won't work with anything but itunes.
So, if I did get an ipod touch, I wouldn't have even been able to use the crappy ipod management tools on Linux. I would've had to reboot, go into windows, and use the crappy itunes.
And there's one thing I hate more then anything, proprietary software/hardware.

Well, when you say DLNA, do you mean like streaming data from your computer to the Archos over wifi?
I know you can do that on the Archos, but as to if you need the web browser plugin, I don't know because I bought that right when I opened the thing. I could reformat I guess but then I'd have to put all my stuff back on and that'd take awhile.
As far as formats, without the plugins it supports MPEG4, AVI, WMV, and I think it supports divx and xvid, don't remember. Everything I use is in WMV (because that's what the 360 uses to stream) which is good for me because when I used ipods I had to have a copy in WMV and a copy in MPEG which just was taking up space. Now all my videos on my computers are in WMV and it's sweet, nice and uniform.

Yeah well remember, PSP was made in 2005 and web browser was added on later in firmware 2.00 so it wasn't even planned for web browsing in the first place.
It's ok for basic stuff though, but whenever I would do any heavy web browsing on the PSP, I would always use this homebrew browser Links 2, using it, you can set it to use the memory stick to store data in while browsing to however much space you want so no more out of memory.

Hey I have two questions. Does the DVR station record in DVD quality (like pretty perfect quality) with no lags? and does the archos have a better screen than the ipod touch (in viewing photos/videos) please do reply!

It can record in up to 2.5mb/s (DVD quality is 3.0mb/s, vhs is 1.0 mb/s) and I've never seen any lag with it, hell I often use it to record the video game footage for my other videos.
The Archos has a 4.3" 800x480 screen while the ipod touch has a 3.5" 480x320 screen. So the Archos does have a better screen hands down

Thanks a lot for the reply. I have another question. Are you familiar with Archos 5? I want to know the screen difference between Archos 5 and Archos 605 WiFi I mean is the resolution better on the archos 5 or is it the same as the Archos 605 WiFi? THANKS. I really want to buy the Archos 5, but it's so expensive!

I say go with the Archos 5, it has a new UI, faster processors, more RAM, and it looks better
And of course the Archos 5 has a 5" screen, instead of 4.3" of the 605, that's why it's called the Archos 5 and not 606.
Now they did take off the rocker buttons to make the screen bigger, but with the new UI, I don't see the need for the buttons.

hey how are you? i;m peruvian, you seem to know a lot about these things, so i just wanted to know if you could help me. What do you think about the cowon q5w? I'm actually planning to get one PMP but i've had some problems deciding between the archos 705 and the cowon q5w, i don't know what's your opinion, but if you could helped, that would be great! my principal problems when i have to choose are: memory, bluetooth, windows-linux, interface. In advance thanks a lot!

When looking at that Cowon you talk about, honestly, I want one now, I'd trade my Archos for it in a second. The fact that it runs Windows CE man that's a big big plus in my book.
Now the Archos has up on the Cowon the fact that it has a much lower price per gigabyte and I don't think you can record tv on a Cowon. But since it's using Windows CE, I don't know if you can find some program to allow it to do that.

Just so you know, the Archos 7 is pretty big, the 7 means 7 inch screen so there you go. I don't know if you're wanting something smaller in which case go for the Archos 5.

Yes, I know that it has a 7-inch screen I prefer that size, as I plan to use it mostly around my house.

Yeah I know what you mean. I'd love to get an Archos 5 and an Archos 7, but I flat out can't afford to buy both. If I was going to upgrade, I'd probably get an 5, just like how I got a 605 instead of a 705. But I don't think I'll be getting a new Archos for awhile. What I want to get is one of those Asus Eee PCs.

I do not mean to continue to harp on the Archos, but when you mentioned the Asus Eee PC, the first thing I thought of was Linux(I was recently helping a girl on YT with her Asus). And if you did not know; the new Archos 5, and 7 are both running Linux. ;O) I just do not know what kernel version though.

How do you like the internet connectivity on archos? Also can we add in more applications to the archos..I am talking about all the stuff that you find on the internet for a jailbroken ipod touch?

Yeah and I just heard that with the ipod touch, you have to connect it to itunes to go through the initial set-up. And that unless you have it modded, it won't work with anything but itunes.
So, if I did get an ipod touch, I wouldn't have even been able to use the crappy ipod management tools on Linux. I would've had to reboot, go into windows, and use the crappy itunes.
And there's one thing I hate more then anything, proprietary software/hardware.

Thats my favorite thing about archos, no need for sincing, you can add and customize folders in almost any way you want. Its all drag and drop. Or you can sinc...if you really want to lol.

Well actually I can take friendly advice. When its actually given in a friendly way. If bluntly tying "sync" in one comment and in another comment saying "use a dictionary" (when I clearly made no crude comment in my response to your one worded response) is your understanding of friendly then I suggest you think again. BTW whats your problem with misspelled words? Especially on a forum that would consider things such as "LOL" acceptable forms of communication?

Well, when you say DLNA, do you mean like streaming data from your computer to the Archos over wifi?
I know you can do that on the Archos, but as to if you need the web browser plugin, I don't know because I bought that right when I opened the thing. I could reformat I guess but then I'd have to put all my stuff back on and that'd take awhile.

Yeah you can stream video over wifi.
As far as formats, without the plugins it supports MPEG4, AVI, WMV, and I think it supports divx and xvid, don't remember. Everything I use is in WMV (because that's what the 360 uses to stream) which is good for me because when I used ipods I had to have a copy in WMV and a copy in MPEG which just was taking up space. Now all my videos on my computers are in WMV and it's sweet, nice and uniform.
