I try and watch movies as often as I can, but the two things that hold me back are time and money. Hollywood can't help how much time I have in my personal life, but box office tickets sure are getting pricey these days. When I do go I rarely pay more money to see it in 3D and even more rarely do I see it in IMAX, though I actually really like the latter.
Fast Five wasn't stupid and it was fun to watch. Transformers was stupid and it was sort of fun. Also, I didn't care about the humans plan.
My area is spoiled by the local theater. It's a really nice and nicely priced place. But I hardly went because many just didn't seem interesting enough or the whole friends are busy and don't want to go by yourself thing.
Grace you should consider doing reviews or a MM on the many excellence indie movies being released these days, it would give your viewers more options.
Wow, grace, you made such amazing points. It's so true what you said. I took a film as art class and in the textbook it talked about the whole A movie and B movie phenomena. Now, as you said, its quality and crap
I really don't go to the movies anymore, I just use NetFlix, and it's cheaper.
Also, about the Fast Five thing, I'm surprised it got positive reviews even though it's fun, loud and kind of long, but it also does have cheesy dialogue why doesn't Transformers get the same praise? They're both fun, loud, kind of long, and have cheesy dialogue. It's just kind of silly that people can go into movies like Fast Five with no brain and enjoy it, but go into Transformers with a brain and hate it.
I do go to the movies.. But i get really bored of Family movies all being similar (smurfs, chipmunks).. and horror movies just copying each other.. its hard to actually find a movie that is just an original and not a deep visual 3d movie or a cheesy fart humor family movie!
I can justify the cost for the end product. I'll only go to the theater if it's on someone else's dime, it's a special occasion, or it's a movie I know is going to be good.
Ticket prices are CRAZY. I know I sound like an old man... but $7 each for a matinee? It used to be $4... & 2nd-run movies for $1. As someone else pointed out, why pay $30 to see a movie that doesn't benefit from a giant screen & 5,000 watts of sound when you can pay $1 &see it in 1080p & 7.1 surround as many times as you like for as many people as you can fit in your living room for $1? Computers draw the movies, the projectors are automated... why the extra cost? (GREAT vid.)
I stopped going to theaters because they're just plain nasty! Sticky floors, dirty seats and smelly carpets. I was ready to give up until AMC opened a "Dine-In Theater in my area. Now, I'm at the movies almost every weekend! You should check out one of these places, Grace. Your movie-going experience will never be the same. And you'll never go back to traditional theaters. I guarantee it!
I think I probably saw more movies this summer than I have in years.
Thor, Super 8, Green Lantern, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Apollo 18. Last summer, I don't even think it was one. So, it may just be my one point of view, but I think Hollywood is actually making better movies for a change. I'm even looking forward to The Darkest Hour.
The movies just seem bad these days. Movies are just interested in action scenes, objectifying women, etc. these days, it seems. It feels like there are less movies that seem like they have a good plotline, with well written characters and acting. I remember when forrest gump and the shawshank redemption came out. You don't see stuff like that anymore, or at least as often, I think.
This very good Grace, and thanks for setting Hollywood straight on good movie and crap movies. I too enjoyed Fast Five.
I go to matinees on a lazy Sunday afternoon all the time. It's fun & peaceful for me. I tend to go to more summer movies because winters are rough where I live. I hate 3D. Depending on the film, people can be kind of rude in theaters, thus the reason I go early in the day. Hollywood recycles the same idea over and over. Who wants to pay for that?
My reason for not going to the movies these days is because there are to many sites were you can actually find the movie for free to watch! Yes i know bootlegging is wrong but if i can find it online then i dont see a reason for going to the theater i dont have a problem paying 8 bucks to watch a movie but if i can find ways to watch a movie for free AND save 8 bucks then thats just the greater option..still i enjoy going to the theaters every once in a while. The nachos is what keeps me there
I watch more movies right now becouse it are there are so many movies that seems so interesting. BUT don't you think kung fu panda 2 is a winner it got $650 worldwide and is in 4th place on the money making of this year worldwide. yes i know in us it was a fail but it was a win worldwide!
I'll get out of my house to go see a movie I actually want to see, maybe something big a week or two after it's run. Not for what's being put out now.

I think that studios are looking at movies as nothing more than the commercials for the DVD. Where as, you use to have to wait forever for the release of your favorite movie so you can watch it at home, the turn around now is between 4 to 6 months. Sure they're interested in first week take, but I think they hope they'll make up most losses in DVD sales. I love seeing movies in the theatres. The only advantage DVDs have is I'm less pissed if someone talks and texts during viewing. :) Cheers.
kung fu panda 2 worldwide 650,827,049 isn't that a win?? don't get why people say it's a fail. Maby a fail in us but not a fail world wide! look in world wide that is the most intresting thing to see. not us boxoffice! World wide is the shit. And i most say i really like the way you do your reviews and everything
I actually went to the movies a lot more this summer than i did last year. There are a lot of other things to do all summer then to watch a crappy movie like watching movie math a way better use of my time.
Hm, movies these days tend to generally suck. Though I still go and watch them. Transformers 3, billion dollars, sucked. So I guess them sucking doesn`t really affect the turnout.
my main reasons: 1) You can watch movies online for free 2) bad reviews 3) if you live in a country where english is not the main language, it's harder to find a convenient cinema or time to see it AND it's probably gonna be in 3d, which is overpriced and shit.
The reason i did not go to the box office that much this summer is the vast amount of movies this year! There were so many movies this year that came out in the UK all at once which no one could afford to go and see at once.. Super 8, Ris e of the Planet of the apes, Captain america all waited this summer till it was knee deep in lots of other movies that I personally did not know what to pick as i wanted to see them all..
Why'm i not going to the movies as much? well ill say this, i want to go to the movies alot now'a days. but it's mostly money. and i cant say the recession is the sole cause, i just dont have a whole lot of extra money after the comics, video games and the occasional box sets. BUT i do rent from Blockbuster like every other week. for what that means.
I wish you could have mentioned how Kung Fu Panda 2 has done dandy worldwide, outgrossing Cars 2 on that scale as well as getting better critical praise while becoming the biggest box office success for a film by a female director.
something hollywood might want to look into is different pricing for different movies, maybe an event movie or established sequel such as the new transformers or harry potter should cost more than an indie film or the start to a new series
i think a good part of it is the ease and availability of the movies after their theater run, on streaming services, netflix, etc. aside from the 'event movies' like harry potter , twilight, et al, a lot of people are content to just wait untill a movie reaches DVD or Netflix, especially when it comes to an expensive 3D movie, or the start of a new series (i think a lot of people will check out the green lantern, but didnt want to pay exorbitant prices to see it in theaters).
In my opinion, it really looks like independent films will dominate over hollywood.
Because of all the money they have, they've really gotten lazy and for example in terms of using other famous sources as adaptations, like comics or tv shows, hollywood tends to rely only on them ALONE to make sales and do not focus on their film quality. Independent workers.
i feel very jaded towards movies nowadays. advertizements make the movie to be one of a kind, larger than life, a must see. but when i sit and watch the movie it feels as if im watching the video excerpts from a wikipedia page. any movie maker with a hollywood mindset, in my opinion, are too concerned with pleasing a calculated demographic rather than creating quality films.
Reason for not going to movies anymore? Im a performer. I love seeing stuff performed LIVE. You get so much better experience LIVE rather then in a movie theater. Hollywood doesn't need anymore money. Live Theater on the other hand, does. (I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT BROADWAY, THEY HAVE MONEY, MY FRIENDS.)
i watch more at home, i see movies i want to go see... but the effort to go see them vs the wait time to dvd.... movies are on dvd so fast now i dont mind waiting..
@LoverGurl77983 Excellent points. Although I must add that for awhile I too didn't want to go to the movies by myself either, but then once I had to - and I loved it! I wouldn't recommend it all the time, but it can be a fun change of pace! :)
@BeyondTheTrailer I have been going to the movies by myself for years. I enjoy matinees too. I hate being crammed in like a sardine & having to share the armrests. Less people means less smartasses yelling at the screen or talking to their friends or talking on their phones. Ticket prices @ matinees are usually only 3/4 of regular price. I can enjoy the movie without agitation. After seeing this, it makes me really want to get my Kitty Pryde screenplay to the powers-that-be. Know any good tips?
@LoverGurl77983 I agree with you on everything except 6, getting out of the house and going to the movies with a bunch of other people is fun instead staying in the house all day. you gotta get out and interact with people ya know?
Why would I go to the theater when I can watch an unlimited amount of movies on TV (On Demand), Netflix, and the Internet? None of this is pirated content but paid content. 1 movie at a theater or 1 month of unlimited movies with Netflix?
Why aren't I going to movies anymore? Movie theaters suck. The food is horrible, the smell is unbearable, they show commercials before the movie starts, there's not enough good movies out there, and the ticket prices are too high. What ever happened to student prices? They're vanishing quicker than ever. The cost of living has dramatically increased! I spent $40 on a tank of gas the other day. I can't spend $15 on a 1 1/2 hour movie. Oh yeah there's 9.1 unemployment in CA too!
Also the easy avaiability of just about any movie is a large reason box office sales are down. Before you had to go to the theaters to see a movie because it would be awhile before you had another chance to see it. Now there's netflix on demand, red box, etc that allow you to watch the movie soon after its end at the theaters with more reasonable prices and at home.
I'm not going to the movies because the movies that are out seem to not interest me. I went to see X-men: First class, and Captain America this summer but not much else. Cowboys Vs Aliens did interest me, however my school schedule got in the way.
I really liked green lantern, sure it just broke even basically, but maybe if a sequel comes out we'll have the origin story out of the way and we can get a epic movie, like Sinestro Corps anyone?
From my perspective, I am limited to going to movies because of the weird times of showings. It is like a 4:30 so right after school then jumps to 9:00 which is too late when the movie ends. That is the theater near me though. Then Rated R movies limit my choice unfortunetly for one more year. I saw and loved Insidious and was PG13 while I was going to see Don't Be Afraid of the Dark and plenty of other R rated movies but it is hard to get an adult to go.
I think the reason people don't go to the movies so often anymore is because many movies nowadays are unoriginal and always follow the same "pattern".
And nowadays it's all about making money. This might be the main focus , but at least try and make it interesting and original. It's boring to see the same things over and over again...
So true...I'd say the other factor is that it's so expensive. To see a movie with some friends can cost about £30, plus even more when it's 3D, plus you've got to get to the cinema in the first place. It's totally ridiculous. Movie sales may be going down. But because it's so expensive the highest grossing films of all time are all from the last 10-15 years.
movie tickets are so expensive!!! it's, like, 10 bucks almost to see a movie at night. 7.50 for matinee. and $13 for 3D that i don't even want? thats why i dont go to see movies.
Now, besides the fact that movies have been on the decline as far as quality and originality, I've heard from friends who live in cities and areas that "forces" them to watch 3D movies that happens to be out for that weekend not giving them a choice to watch it the old fashioned way. If a movie in 3D is especially poorly done as an after thought to spike sales, people catch on and avoid it in the future and much rather wait to watch it at home 2D.
This year I went to the movies almost every weekend and I usully go to the movies only 3 times a year. Also here in western Canada its12 to18 dollars to see a movie and then popcorn and pop which can be up to $20.
I don't go to the movies much anymore for 3 reasons: 1. Tickets are ridiculously expensive 2. I'd rather see movies go back to black and white than sit through yet another 3D monstrosity, and 3. Hollywood is seriously running out of ideas. Nothing looks good anymore. I pretty much only see movies once a month now, and I don't see a movie unless I'm confident it will be worth paying the absurd ticket price.
There are two reasons I haven't bee attending the cinema as much as I would like
The first is here in Australia the cost to go to the movies is $20 at least and thats before any drinks or snacks its just too expensive to go as much as I would like to
And the second is lately a lot of the movies have been remakes...where is the originality Hollywood?
Totally agree with this. The reason I don't go to the movies much is because nothing us original it seems like everything is a remake, a sequel, or has a similar plot to another movie! Come on Hollywood where's the originality!!!!!????
It all breaks down to advertisement and story. Story's are failing to interest me. I also refuse to watch most movies that show up at my local theater due to 3d. Its a small town and small theaters sometimes only offer one format for said movie 3d, frankly im over the "lets slap 3d on the movie as a after thought". There is something wrong with a industry calling their payday idiots.. Entertainment comes in all forms it doesn't have to be Forest Gump quality writing to sell a film.
honestly! Who is the academy? The suits? A lot alot of the academy winning movies are crap and they say fast five was crap! That was a great fun movie! And people don't go to the movies because all that has been coming out is crap. And the suits look down their nose at us for accepting crap. Look at their wallets now!
I know that Americans are complaining about the rise in movie tickets, and its happening across the pond too. A few years back I could go see a good movie for under £4. When i turned 15 (About 2 years back) it became £5.50 for a teen ticket and withing the last 4 months it has risen to £7.50. Its almost twice the price it was a few years ago!
i see all my movies in theatres, opening weekend for $5 early bird, i dont often cuz....there just isnt too many good ones, and some good ones arent worth seeing in theatres
honestly the end august was pretty weak for movies surprisingly. The beginning of the summer was good but now the movies just plain suck, that's why people don't go to see them. If the movies had good acting and a good story it would sell. Back in the 80's and early 90's they didn't have fancy CGI, and yet some of the best movies of all time are from that era.
hemm, i was fasting for a month and i didnt want to see any boob flashes during august. Beside there were too many movies in summers that some of them had to be put aside. Watch harry potter 3, transformer 3, thor, captain america and i believe we can add kungfu panda2 in the mix?Transformer 3 suck. I rather watch the first one .
i dont go to the movies these days because its too expensive. 10 bucks this year vs 5 bucks last year, WTF. And yeah, when most movies have a crappy storyline i dont watch them either. hollywood is doing the same as the game industry. they make a bunch of movies with crap stories and expect them to sell. Long time favorites wil sell but new ones wont, and new movies with great stories will sell.
I can only speak for myself but having tickets prices of £8, and over £10 for a 3D movie (that you don't even want to watch in 3D) has put me off going to the cinema. if you wait for the DVD you can buy it for the same price and watch it as many times as you want
I've stopped watching as much movies as I used to watch. So many of them aren't even worth the time let alone the high prices. Hollywood has become so concerned about money is that they only make sequels to make the best return on investment. The ticket prices are pretty ridiculous.
It's simple why movies sales have plunged, one reason is it's the same stories and "characters" over and over but its really thanks to the internet, netflix, and even iTunes.
Way to expensive. I went to the movies a month a go and the ticket was $9, then i went last week and it was up to $10.50! No wonder everyone sneaks in.
Going to the movies is an expensive investment, what with the ticket prices and the candy etc. I take my kids to see a few really worthwile pictures (all Pixar, some Disney, a little bit of the rest). But it costs so much it's one movie a month tops for them. Usually less. And for myself I only spend that money if it's something I really want to see on the big screen.
Also, nowadays the TV sets are of such good quality, with great sound system, and at home I have better company too.

i've gone to the movies more times this summer than all of last year, as for the reason I usually don't go is that there are a lot of franchises that need to die also I hate it when movies have obvious plots and a lot of them lack creativity and passion except for the marvel movies they were all top notch and apes surprisingly
I only see first showing movies because they are half the price of regular movie prices. Literally $5 vs $9.50. But I, like everyone else, have a job so I really can't go to too many first showings. There were actually a lot of movies this year I wanted to see but never did because of this. I still want to see the help, the apes movie, and conan even now but I just don't have to time to go to an 11am showing and I REFUSE to pay 10 bucks to see a movie.
The quality of TV shows has increased significantly and almost better than any movie out there. I think people just stick to their HD TV. I don't think it will increase. 3d movies are bad too.
and as for your screenwriting topic, you are absolutley right. i want to be a screenwriter as a profession. I love writing, but i take time to make them worth reading. So many people write crap and just release it, your right.
To answer your question grace, i'm not going to the movies as much this summer cuz i'm broke, being a job hunting teenager sucks. luckily, i still saw HP 7-2, 30 Minutes or Less, Green Lantern, Rise/Apes, Transformers 3, and Final Destination 5. As for Friends With Benefits & Conan, well i snuck into those afterwards, i'm good at it :)
The cinema full of crapy movies and we pay so much money low down the price of tickets and care more for the people who go and wach them. If you make good films people will wach it's just so simple
fast 5 was big kuz of the rock and the match hes going to have with Cena... the truth is what the ppl are saying just as it is with me most movies are just bad and not worth paying for
Let me see, 25 - 30 bucks for two tickets to see a crappy 3D movie, another 25-30 bucks for overpriced, bad food, that at a total of 50-60+ dollars for a casual evening out. Not worth it!
Hollywood makes D- level quality films. Most movies won't pass the 10 year rule, as in, would you watch this movie again in 10 years? Movies have become junk food so no you wouldn't.
You also have to pay $10 to go into a theater, sit in a chair for 2+ hours and watch a flick, then leave. You can get a Netflix subscription for less than the cost of one movie ticket.

Reasons I don't go out to see movies that often
1) Tickets cost a lot in NY.
2) I don't have time and DVD's are actually more convenient b/c they're on my schedule even if I have to wait longer.
3) Listening to and reading reviews, there aren't a lot of movies that I feel I need to see in theaters.
I do go out but I want to see something special. Otherwise, there's a huge volume of older movies I can get on DVD.

Hm, movies these days tend to generally suck. Though I still go and watch them. Transformers 3, billion dollars, sucked. So I guess them sucking doesn`t really affect the turnout.

hey grace, do you think harry potter and the deathly hallows pt 2 will pass Titanic as the 2nd highest grossing movie of all time? PLEASE ANSWER!

my main reasons: 1) You can watch movies online for free 2) bad reviews 3) if you live in a country where english is not the main language, it's harder to find a convenient cinema or time to see it AND it's probably gonna be in 3d, which is overpriced and shit.

The reason i did not go to the box office that much this summer is the vast amount of movies this year! There were so many movies this year that came out in the UK all at once which no one could afford to go and see at once.. Super 8, Ris e of the Planet of the apes, Captain america all waited this summer till it was knee deep in lots of other movies that I personally did not know what to pick as i wanted to see them all..
jimbolimboboy 5 months ago
Why'm i not going to the movies as much? well ill say this, i want to go to the movies alot now'a days. but it's mostly money. and i cant say the recession is the sole cause, i just dont have a whole lot of extra money after the comics, video games and the occasional box sets. BUT i do rent from Blockbuster like every other week. for what that means.
scofisticated 5 months ago
I wish you could have mentioned how Kung Fu Panda 2 has done dandy worldwide, outgrossing Cars 2 on that scale as well as getting better critical praise while becoming the biggest box office success for a film by a female director.
kchishol1970 5 months ago
something hollywood might want to look into is different pricing for different movies, maybe an event movie or established sequel such as the new transformers or harry potter should cost more than an indie film or the start to a new series
renov93 5 months ago
i think a good part of it is the ease and availability of the movies after their theater run, on streaming services, netflix, etc. aside from the 'event movies' like harry potter , twilight, et al, a lot of people are content to just wait untill a movie reaches DVD or Netflix, especially when it comes to an expensive 3D movie, or the start of a new series (i think a lot of people will check out the green lantern, but didnt want to pay exorbitant prices to see it in theaters).
renov93 5 months ago

Reason ppl don't go to theaters (my opinion):
1) Too much money for a ticket & 3d isn't my thing.
2) No one has time to see a movie now a days.
3) It makes more sense to rent it for a dollar at the redbox then to spend over 10 bucks on a ticket. You just gotta wait longer to c it.
4) When you get older & most of your friends move away, you don't want to go by yourself.
5) Movie theater is too far away from where you live.
6) Theaters are too crowded & rather watch at home.

@BeyondTheTrailer but what if it's a kiddy movie when your an adult?
coactor20 5 months ago
@BeyondTheTrailer I have been going to the movies by myself for years. I enjoy matinees too. I hate being crammed in like a sardine & having to share the armrests. Less people means less smartasses yelling at the screen or talking to their friends or talking on their phones. Ticket prices @ matinees are usually only 3/4 of regular price. I can enjoy the movie without agitation. After seeing this, it makes me really want to get my Kitty Pryde screenplay to the powers-that-be. Know any good tips?
TheReturningShadow 5 months ago
@LoverGurl77983 I agree with you on everything except 6, getting out of the house and going to the movies with a bunch of other people is fun instead staying in the house all day. you gotta get out and interact with people ya know?

Why would I go to the theater when I can watch an unlimited amount of movies on TV (On Demand), Netflix, and the Internet? None of this is pirated content but paid content. 1 movie at a theater or 1 month of unlimited movies with Netflix?
mikegnome 5 months ago
Why aren't I going to movies anymore? Movie theaters suck. The food is horrible, the smell is unbearable, they show commercials before the movie starts, there's not enough good movies out there, and the ticket prices are too high. What ever happened to student prices? They're vanishing quicker than ever. The cost of living has dramatically increased! I spent $40 on a tank of gas the other day. I can't spend $15 on a 1 1/2 hour movie. Oh yeah there's 9.1 unemployment in CA too!
mikegnome 5 months ago
It still amazes me that things can make 1 billion dollars.
mikegnome 5 months ago
Also the easy avaiability of just about any movie is a large reason box office sales are down. Before you had to go to the theaters to see a movie because it would be awhile before you had another chance to see it. Now there's netflix on demand, red box, etc that allow you to watch the movie soon after its end at the theaters with more reasonable prices and at home.

I'm not going to the movies because the movies that are out seem to not interest me. I went to see X-men: First class, and Captain America this summer but not much else. Cowboys Vs Aliens did interest me, however my school schedule got in the way.

From my perspective, I am limited to going to movies because of the weird times of showings. It is like a 4:30 so right after school then jumps to 9:00 which is too late when the movie ends. That is the theater near me though. Then Rated R movies limit my choice unfortunetly for one more year. I saw and loved Insidious and was PG13 while I was going to see Don't Be Afraid of the Dark and plenty of other R rated movies but it is hard to get an adult to go.
curlyfryist 5 months ago

300warrior300 5 months ago
movie tickets are so expensive!!! it's, like, 10 bucks almost to see a movie at night. 7.50 for matinee. and $13 for 3D that i don't even want? thats why i dont go to see movies.

SPOT ON with the closing comments!

Entertainment comes in all forms it doesn't have to be Forest Gump quality writing to sell a film.

honestly the end august was pretty weak for movies surprisingly. The beginning of the summer was good but now the movies just plain suck, that's why people don't go to see them. If the movies had good acting and a good story it would sell. Back in the 80's and early 90's they didn't have fancy CGI, and yet some of the best movies of all time are from that era.
Shortgiraffe231 5 months ago
hemm, i was fasting for a month and i didnt want to see any boob flashes during august. Beside there were too many movies in summers that some of them had to be put aside. i dont go to the movies these days because its too expensive.

RelaxNplay64 5 months ago
I only see first showing movies because they are half the price of regular movie prices. Literally $5 vs $9.50. But I, like everyone else, have a job so I really can't go to too many first showings. There were actually a lot of movies this year I wanted to see but never did because of this. I still want to see the help, the apes movie, and conan even now but I just don't have to time to go to an 11am showing and I REFUSE to pay 10 bucks to see a movie.
