The book is called The 13th Warrior and was written by Micheal Crichton (spelling?), the same guy who wrote Jurassic Park books; however in that case the movies made from JP books where a pale rip-off.

Kind of it was in fact based on a real character, Ibn Fadlan, the one antonio banderas plays, but the story is based loosely on his documentation of his time spent with the vikings around 922 A.D. mixed with some elements of beowulf...

Arthas was inspired by Bulwyf, remember the ending scene where Arthas murders his father? remember the scene when the vikings enter the kings palace the way Bulwyf walks towrds the king and the camera views and all that? ^^
