  • I love how they use the English, heard it on Scott Mills the other day

  • @01kgunn ye but so what, over 50% of the English language are French words anyway, the rest being German,Danish and Dutch, learn where your own language has come from before judging others

  • Olaf = last

    Gorau = best

  • i love the welsh language, and i'm half welsh, but what is with welsh people always saying welsh is an older language than english??? Maybe (although not proven) the roots of the welsh language have been in great britain longer than the roots of the english language, but that doesn't really make welsh a much older language than english does it?

  • English began with the arrival of the Anglo-Saxons in 5th/6th century. Welsh began to develop at about the same time.

The Welsh people however descending from the Celts were native to the British Isles before the English (Anglo-Saxons). This is probably where the confusion lies.

Welsh didn't originally include the English words you recognise here, they have since been adopted as have European words (mainly French) been adopted into English.

  • Welsh is a natural progression of a Brythonic dialect whereas English is not so much a progression of a specific language but a combination of many. Germanic Anglo-Saxon, Norse, and lots of French after the Norman invasion. It also uses lots of Latin and Greek terms. Middle English and Modern English are very very different from Old English, whereas Old Welsh and Modern Welsh are much more similar in comparison.

  • The other Brythonic languages, Cornish, Breton and Cumbric are surprisingly similar to Welsh too which would suggest that the languages have not changed that much from their original dialects. The lineage of English can't be followed back in a single specific line like this which is why it is considered a younger language.

  • My driving instructor speaks Arabic and uses certain English words....Why does it even matter?! A language is a language! In England words are used all the time that have been made up ie. 'innit' and 'skeen', which, really, should be your problem if language is such a big issue for you! So, pray tell, why is it so bad that countries use some words that are PROPER English as well as there own language?! Are people really that bored that they're finding issues with something like this?! Jeez.

  • There's a lot of wooden acting from Imogen and a lot of staring into the distance from the other actors :P

  • I love the sound of this language! I really hope the usage of Welsh grows more and more.

  • oh for christ sake, why cant people just wrap up.

i wish the english would just accept that we have a language of our own.

they seem to be under the illusion the welsh spend their whole lives in wait of something to use that the english came up with.

  • @XdamnXthatsXhotX what ?

  • Where did the English get most of 'their' vocabulary though? French? Latin?

Welsh *is* the oldest language in Europe. We only stole 'your' more modern words.

Also, we do have our own words for most things, but most people just don't USE them.

  • i did of course mean 'vocabulary'

  • Dw i'n hoffi bod ti ddim yn deall Cymraeg, ond ti'n meddwl bod ti'n gallu siarad cachu am ein iaith.

  • Ok then 'sweetheart', if you're not talking shit about our language, read your comment again. Apparently Welsh has 'stolen' words from you, and tried to call it its own.

That sounds quite like you're making out the language is some moribund and inadequate language that doesn't have it's own history.

Welsh is far far older than English, petal.

I just think it was an unprovoked and uncalled for comment.

And if you're 'tough' yourself, address xelzbellzx point.

  • Ever occur to you that Welsh people might just be language switching? The same way that 'Spanglish' and 'Franglais' are spoken among people who speak both languages. It doesn't mean they 'stole' words off anyone.

  • It was shown in England circa 1994, but was dropped because English speakers are not used to watching programmes with subtitles.

  • darren is my 3rd cousin his real name is (huw euron) woot woot i met people on pobol :)

  • This is with regards to your lads mag work etc: IMogen you have so much more potential than this. Also if you are going to model - with your sensuality and natural uniqueness- these male controlled car shoots are a waste to you! YOu should go to Brazilian photographers or Brazil and get original work done in unique natural, adventurous environments.

  • ok.. wat is dis programme.. cos i fort it was lyk a soap lyk eastenders and ther relatin 2 real life

  • well they relate all soaps to real life.

    its mean to be realistic

they play songs on the characters radios that are in the charts, make reference when the world cup is on and sometimes discuss celebrities, its the same

  • Erm, what language are you speaking? Fort? Lyk? Spellcheck?
