i've listened to some greg howe and thought he was great, but never really GOT in to him.... paul is and has been my guitar god for over 2 years now, but i think greg had better phrases on this track--i need to listen to him more!!!! amazing jam by both
@winrar Greg is my no.1 guitar hero. Try these tracks: Dance, Jump Start, Song for Rachelle, Divided World, and for the craziest solo ever heard in the history of all things guitar, try Stringed Sanity. These tracks are quite varied styles of Greg, so I think its a good intro to his work, and what hes capable of, enjoy !
all you the above coments are GAY!!!!!!! YOU CANT BE LIKE THEM THATS ALL YOUR FAULTS!!!!!!! LOSERSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
i bet there are so many people that have these two guys as their two favorite guitar players. they are really a dynamic duo and whoever saw this is lucky as.... well there really isn't an expression that could possibly justify how lucky you were
Both are great guitarists from the 80's. Paul came out in 1985, Greg in 1988. Greg is actually 3years older than Paul. I picked up the guitar 17years ago because of Paul. But Greg was actually the one that revived my interest in guitar when I almost gave up playing. Thanks to these guys.
Thanx for the upload...both guitarists are amazing and not that it really matters, but Frank Gambale pretty mucn trailblazed and popularized string skipping in the early 80's....Other notable entries include Uli Jon Roth, Eric Johnson, and Lenny Breau. Keep Rocking!!!
@osiruskat Tal Farlow, early bebop guitar great, & idol of Lenny Breau, was using hammer-ons, pull-offs, string-skipping, sweep-picking, tapping, natural & artificial harmonics, even feedback using the vibration of his jazz guitar's carved arch-top, in 1949 at the latest. (They were all used sparsely: Straight alternate picking was best suited to cleanly play most of the bebop lines in Farlow's repetoire. But Tal did it all, and did it well.)
saying Greg Howe as a shred god is like reducing him to just only capable of ultra fast shred up and down neck like most of the shredders.
yes, he obviously can shred, but he's much more than that. Greg is one of the best fusion jazz players and has amazing phrasing, timing, and everything else a guitarist can ask for, he invented techniques such as slide vibrato and hammer-ons-from-no-where and which style, and techniques has been copied with new generation players
Nicely said.saying Greg is incredible is an understatment for sure.I started taking lessons from him around 93-94 for a few years then went back to him after the NSYNC thing for a while..He amazed everytime and moved my playing every lesson. He's even more a better teacher.I miss him since he moved to the west coast
@dmnxCGi I dunno, the hammer-ons from nowhere, EVH was doing that and he probably got that from someone else, and as far as sliding a whole tone back and forth, that's probably existed before. All in all Paul Gilbert and Greg Howe are fantastic players.
EVH got it from Jeff Beck, who was doing all this before Hendrix. Any guitarist will know Beck was (is) the ultimate rock god, before even he knew it, and never got it.
@skiinscubaout He wasn't doing it as upfront and straight forward as Jimi was doing it, Jeff Beck says so himself in an interview talking about Jimi Hendrix. Truth was an alright record, never knew Rod could sing like that, pegged him as just a pop guy, but I like his later stuff, and I'd rather listen to Led Zeppelin I than Truth.
@xXNeoShredderXx OK, granted regards Hendrix, but tapping, for example, began a long time before 1979. Still, I agrree with you that even now, I find Beck's music hard to listen to flat out, but I can easily sit down with Eric Johnson or Petrucci with Liquid Tension Experiment playing in the background. Damn, must be getting old... :)
@skiinscubaout Yea, I heard jazz guys were doing it for a long time, about tapping. And sweep picking was done in country music before metal even became a certified genre. I didn't think of Truth hard, I thought it wasn't hard enough. It was probably the hardest thing of the British Blues boom but then Jimi, Led Zep and Cream took it even farther. Like it's not even close. Peter Green and Jimmy Page sound world's apart, even though they're using some of the same notes, and had similar heroes.
Hendrix could be very modest for a rockstar. He endorsed and tried to draw attention to a lot of other great players. He spoke highly of Larry Coryell, John McLaughlin, Terry Kath, and Johnny Winter...to name just four. He just wanted to play a role in the evolution of guitar playing.
call me crazy, but i just don't think that Hendrix would've gotten into Neo-Classical Metal and gone on tour with Paul Gilbert, even though it would be cool
two of d best guitarists of all time. both alumnos of successful '80s speed metal bands and has since evolved into very complete guitar players. i cud listen to these 2 guys for hours and hours.
I dont know why i never noticed before, but Paul has created a much more rich and classy style for him self, yet he can still rip out his old racer x licks any day.
Paul gilbert and Greag howe playing Hey Joe should be a flavor of Ice cream. Wooohooo!
Damn, ibanezbloke - you are a disgrace to Ibanez owners everywhere, speaking like that! You think you can do better than Paul can? Hang your head in shame, and then hang your OWN damn ibanez up - wait, no, just hang yourself somewhere! Paul Gilbert is amazing, as is Greg Howe, and Im even willing to bet I would take you to school! Have some respect for the masters, and appreciate the different qualities of all of them!
Greg is a total monster. He easily throw Gilbert's boring sequence licks right back at him at full speed. I've loved his playing for more than 20 years! He is truly head and shoulders above his peers. Fantastic playing!
Yeah it is, he's got tremendous skills, cntrols every technique untill ultimate perfection, very melodic playing too, a bit like Howe in that respect! I'd love another GG Album!!
I tell you guys something, Paul Gilbert is a fantastic player, but he's a little too diatonic. When Greg starts hitting all those outside notes that's what really grabs my ear.
