just a lil advice........learn more about knives if your goin to do knife reveiws........not ur personal veiws......if u want to know what i mean look up nutinfancy......he knows his shit
I own two of these, I think they're great. It's really lightweight, several times I've forgotten I was wearing it. I wear mine either inside the waistband or upside down under my t-shirt using a shoulder harness I made out of rawhide. I think the sheath is excellent, it retains the knife but is still easily accessible. Obviously there are better knives out there, but this is definitely a high value knife. If you get it, spend some time sharpening it, and you'll be satisfied. good review btw
Yeah this isn't a real high quality knife obviously, but it was still a good thorough review. I was looking into getting this knife and this video really help a lot, so thanks.
Thats the only draw back to the CRKT shiv. Actually the tip of your knife wont break , it will bend , like for instance if you were using it to pry open a paint can. The CRKT being Carbon steel won't bend , the tip will break off.
Your talking about sharpening this knife. First off your talking a knife made in China , which is probably the cheapest shittiest steel around next to Pakistan and secondly , I seriously doubt that a $16.00 knife was properly heat treated , so that blade is most likely too soft to take and hold a sharp edge. If your looking for a sharp boot knife try the CRKT Sting. They use drop forged carbon steel which is way better than stainless for edge retention and they come out of the box razor sharp.
well idunno bro its eld a shrapness pretty well. its a smith and wesson but then again i havent used it much, im gunna search that knife and its 440C stainless steel
Yeah bro , the line of 440C steel is pretty common in Asian made knives. Taiwan made knives are commonly ATS 34 with Pakistan and India towing the dredge with 440A & B which is probably the worst. In my opinion stainless is just too soft , no match for carbon steel when it comes to edge retention The CRKT sting is a one piece integral tang knife which is drop forged from 1050 carbon steel with a gun blued finish to protect it from corrosion. For $40.00 it's probaby the best buy in a boot knife.
@Taz0161 first off, it's the cheaper knives that can have really sharp edges, the only problem is that the edge doesn't hold opposed to the more expensive knives. I have this knife 2 and it is a very solid knife. I doubt i was heated treated as well but I know that it isn't soft and can 2 hold an edge. So unless you have this knife and actually know what you are talking about don't be criticizing! I got your back FormatTester!
@MrKCosmo Yes I've handled this knife before , Typical Chinese Crap ! Realistically Your not going to find a properly heat treated and finished boot dagger unless you drop $200.00+ for somethoing like a Sidekick or CS Thi Pan. I've been into knives since I was 16 and when someone comes to my shop wanting a knife sharpened I'll inform them I can put a razor edge on the cheapest Chink knife but I won't guarantee it through a slice of bread. Come see me in 20 years. We'll talk knives :)
@Taz0161 You don't know what you're talking about. Where do you think CRKT knives are made? Steel doesn't magically become worse if you take it to a different country. Additionally, high edge retention isn't always ideal since we don't carry benchstones around with us in the field
Your right comrade ,Steel is the same no matter which country. It's all in the heat treat. Now you mentioned CRKT , made in Taiwan , that country produces some fine cutlery , as does Ontario knife company also made in Taiwan ( Utilitac 2 my favorite ) Mid range steels such as AUS8 - 440-C & ATS-34 will do a beautiful job if properly heat treated. Now on the other hand China has never been famous for their heat treating , now combine that factor with something like 440A and it sucks
@Taz0161 Why would you put a razor edge on a knife? That's just stupid. You can't then blame the knife when it goes blunt after a couple of uses, you have to blame the idiot who sharpened it at such a small angle. Does that make sense to you? Do you understand what you're doing wrong??
@9ooglesuxballs Yes that makes perfect sense to me , and relatively comparable to your very existance on this planet. We can't blame you for turning out to be a disorganized , disconnected , grabastic , Russian retard which is reflective of your entire economically disadvantaged nation. We blame the imbeciles responsible for your conception & birth. If I had your parents in front of me I'd slap them both. Now get lost Borris before I decide to really hurt your feelings.
@Taz0161 Hahahaha, I'm not Russian. What, did you go look at my channel? Do you think I'm 109 years old too? Moron. Well, I'm glad you've now learned how to sharpen a knife properly, no don't thank me, teaching you was my pleasure. Oh, and something I didn't mention earlier (I would've thought you got the hint) was that CRKT also manufacture quality knives in China, so that shits all over your theory about countries having their own standardised heat treatment practices. Have a nice day!
Judging from your writing, I thought 109 was your IQ. You know what I love about cyber bullies and internet trolls ? The fact that brain dead fucks like you really think they're actually impacting someones life. Take your bullshit and put it in a toddlers birthday card , because thats about as meaningful as it is to me. Enjoy your life as a eunuch. Next time I'm properly sharpening a knife, I will think of you and your lonely existence you sad sad thing. Now laugh clown, laugh
@Taz0161 You thought 109 was my IQ? Well it's not, but like...even if it was, that's still above average. So was that supposed to be an insult?
I wouldn't say I'm trolling so much as arguing...educating even. You're pretty dumb, not gonna lie. But proving people wrong and pissing them off is...kind of satisfying. You even said you're gonna think of me again. Am I getting inside your head man? I really feel like I should be the mature one and stop...but you're fun to annoy
@Taz0161 Fish should already know how to swim, just like you should already know how to sharpen knives. If a full grown fish can't swim, that's probably because it's too stupid to learn. Anyway, this is getting boring, so you can do one of three things:
1. Get back to the point and make a solid argument
2. Ignore my comments since replying is, in a way, validating your opponent
3. Try to insult me some more
Free hint: number two is the wisest option. In fact, I might even beat you to it
I don't mean to sound rude , but are you really this stupid or have you spent lifetime practicing ? Why razor sharpen a knife ? was that a serious question ? Because it helps when your skinning game , or to fillet fish to have very sharp knife idiot. If your going to chop wood get hatchet , is not what knife was designed for. Do you know your blade steels 440 series , ATS-34 BG-42 V10 S30V 154CM San Mai 3 1095 1095 am I talking over your head ? Why would you pretend to be Russian
The original point. If a good sharp knife and goes blunt after a couple of uses it's either one of two things. The knife is probably a cheap lower end knife and the rockwell isn't high enough to retain the edge. If it's a higher end knife TOP's , Strider , ZT , Microtech , and the razor edge goes blunt , then the knife has been miss used. Remember it's a knife , it's not a pry bar , a lock pick , a can opener , a wire cutter , a hatchet , makeshift screwdriver , or anything but a cutting tool
Bingo , right on the nose. But try telling that to this spastic idiot. he thinks all countries have the same cutlery manufacturing process and if a knife goes south , it's the fault of the guy who sharpened it. Look below , he's so stupid he can't even decipher sarcasm LMAO. I really wish the parents out there would monitor their kids computer usage ROFLMAO
@Taz0161 Let's review, shall we? You made a dumb comment. I called you out on it. Instead of defending your point of view, you've tried to insult my nationality, called me a retard, a eunuch, a jackass, spastic, and brought up my parents, twice, yet implied that I'M a bully. Face it, you're pathetic. You got nothin' on me. Like I've said before, if you have anything relevant to add to the conversation, hurry up and say it because your lame attempts at insults are just making you look even worse
First of all you started this whole thing making some ridiculously absurd comment about over sharpening knives and them going blunt , called me an idiot to start it. I'm just having fun with you is all, because I can pretty much guess by your general knowlegde of cutlery, and various blae steels that your most likely in your late teens, you'venever owned a knife that you paid more than $30.00 for so therefore you wouldn't know anyway. Make some videos , lets see your great collection.
2 others have said , If a razor edge knife goes blunt on you after a couple of uses it's either one of two things. The knife is probably a cheap piece a shit and the rockwell isn't high enough to retain the edge , if it's a high end knife , then the knife has been miss used. Don't believe everything you see on these knife websites. I know someone that paid $280.00 for a Cold Steel Caledonian Edge and snapped the tip trying to copy the video on their site. Somehow I could see you doing that
@Taz0161 Heh, what were you trying to do with it? Trying to open a paint can? In the context of the video, I personally own and have used Chinese made S&W knives. I, like many others, know that there is nothing wrong with them. If you have used them (you said you've used this one) and had trouble with the edge, what else could it be other than user error? In my experience, the number one cause of poor edge retention on decent knives is people putting crazy thin bevels on them
I've never purchased or used any boot knife aside from the original AG Russell Sting & the CVA in my video postings , which are just collectables. # 2. My original comment was in response to someone wanting to sharpen this knife , where I said these type knives are not designed to be very sharp , they are designed for stabbing , so most of them are made from the lower end steels ( usually the 440 series ) with not much of a heat treat if any at all. This is what many people don't know.
As far as edge retention goes , you don't have to take a blade down to a 5 degree bevel to get it sharp enough to shave LMAO. ( Trust me on this one , I've made knives , check out my work on the guild ) about a smooth 25 to 30 degree bevel can achieve the desired sharpness and still retian it's strength. One of the tricks is , never sharpen any knife on anything power driven , because it produces heat , and can take the temper out of the edge. and the most important thing many don't acknowledge
@9ooglesuxballs Hey stupid , are you going to answer question ? Why are you pretending to be a Russian on channel ? You should change name to 9oogleSucksballs hahahahahaha
@SRostislav Oh hi. Sorry I didn't get to this earlier. I'm not pretending to be Russian, all it says on my channel is Country: Russia. So that could just mean that I'm currently in Russia, or that I was in Russia when I created the channel and haven't been bothered to change it since.
And you do realise that 9ooglesuxballs means the same thing as 9oogleSucksBalls, right?
@9ooglesuxballs No I don't " realise " hahaha but I do realize that maybe it's you that needs to buy dictionary. I don't realize because in my country whether your speaking english or Belarusian we spell words correctly. If you mean sucks than spell sucks ok Sux is no word. Are you nigger by any chance ? I know USA is full with them.
@SRostislav 'Realize' is only the American spelling of the word. People generally don't bother spelling things out in their user names since they're pretty much just for identification purposes. Before trying to call people out on their spelling again, you should probably brush up on your grammar and general English skills, like for example, you should have used 'you're' instead of 'your' and 'then' instead of 'than'.
Which was put into a letter shipped with every knife I made and sold. This is a knife. It's not a chisel , It's not a pry bar , It's not an AX , It's not a makeshift screwdriver , It's not a can opener , It's not a lock pick/entery tool , It's not a fish hook taker outer , It's not a wire cutter , or anything else but a cutting tool. I guarantee my work for life unless upon inspcetion I determine the knife has been miss used. I'm going to post a new video in your honor on proper knife use
Were going to take several of my knives of various steels like BG-42 , S30V , AUS8 and put them through various cutting tasks here on the ranch. And in the end you'll see that afterward they all will still shave hair off my arm. As I said before any knife made from higher end steel with a properly heat treated blade is going to run you at least $100.00. And if properly taken care of they will last you a life time. As with anything else you truely get what you pay for.
@fartguy1172 Well looking at it from that prospective , yes your statement is true. The original argument started when this imbecilic teen below saw a comment I posted regarding advice on sharpening this type of knife. In which I stated that these type knives weren't designed with sharp edges in mind , their made for stabbing. Therefore the steel used is usually of lower grade , and in some cases not even heat treated. He started ranting on about people putting razor sharp edges on knives and
that causes them to go blunt because the angle is so shallow , which is not true as I stated below you can sharpen at a 25 to 30 degree angle and achieve the desired sharpness , and still have plenty of edge strength. The idiot is trying to argue with a knife maker LMAO. Edge retention depends on 3 factors. #1. Quality of steel #2. Proper heat treatment. and #3. most importantly , whether or not the knife has been miss used. My Utilitac came razor sharp out of the box. maybe he should call
@Taz0161 Nah, I'll just call you, and tell you you're doing it wrong. Again. Because remember, you're the one who's saying it sucks. I have this knife. I know the steel can stand up to heavy use, so even going by YOUR logic, the only way that you could have trouble using this knife is if you're misusing it. Alternatively, you judge a knife on its attributes (i.e. made in China) rather than its actual performance, in which case you can take your ignorance, prejudice and arm shavers somewhere else
@9ooglesuxballs You know something , your amazing. All you had to do in the beginning is just say I have this knife and I like it , and that would have been the end of it. My response would have been something like , well if you like it and it , then more power to you. There's no need to drop $200.00 on a ZT , or go to someone like Jeff Claiborne or myself for a $500.00 custom if that knife suits your needs. And that would have been the end of it. But nooooooooooo , you have to turn this into
a 20 paragraph immature piss fight , drop silly ridiculous weak ass arguments about thin bevels and shit , apparently you haven't got the first dam clue on sharpening. So to end this , # 1 my prejudices are first hand experiences , my logic is scientific , and as far as ignorance goes , what you don't know about cutlery can fill 4 books. And the best word I can come up with to describe you totally is , You're An ASS ! in every sense of the word. Now live with that.
@Taz0161 "My prejudices are first hand experiences" - you need to go and drop $30.00 on a dictionary. My problem isn't with you disliking this knife, or with your knife usage, or even with your sheer stupidity. The reason I started this was because you said Chinese steel (and knives as you later implied) is shit, which as anyone who knows anything anout knives can tell you, is completely untrue.
Oh by the way I love your channel. Zero uploads - Zero Friends and 2 insults LMAO Do you think that could possibly be becuase Your An Ass ???????????????? ROFLMAO

SRostislav 9 months ago
@SRostislav Oh hi. Sorry I didn't get to this earlier. I'm not pretending to be Russian, all it says on my channel is Country: Russia. So that could just mean that I'm currently in Russia, or that I was in Russia when I created the channel and haven't been bothered to change it since.
And you do realise that 9ooglesuxballs means the same thing as 9oogleSucksBalls, right?
9ooglesuxballs 9 months ago
@9ooglesuxballs No I don't " realise " hahaha but I do realize that maybe it's you that needs to buy dictionary. I don't realize because in my country whether your speaking english or Belarusian we spell words correctly. If you mean sucks than spell sucks ok Sux is no word. Are you nigger by any chance ? I know USA is full with them.
SRostislav 9 months ago
@SRostislav 'Realize' is only the American spelling of the word. People generally don't bother spelling things out in their user names since they're pretty much just for identification purposes. Before trying to call people out on their spelling again, you should probably brush up on your grammar and general English skills, like for example, you should have used 'you're' instead of 'your' and 'then' instead of 'than'.

@SRostislav Most likely because he's a phony & a loser

Taz0161 9 months ago
Now go do some research on various blade steels and heat treatment process so you don't make a complete jackass out of yourself.

@9ooglesuxballs You just got OWNED - ROFLMAO you better give it up

@Taz0161 A knife is a knife bro. Whether it's made from stone to carbon steel, every single blade has the potential to do work or even kill.
fartguy1172 9 months ago

The Ontario knife company and tell them they're doing it wrong ROFLMAO
Taz0161 9 months ago
@Taz0161 Nah, I'll just call you, and tell you you're doing it wrong. Again. Because remember, you're the one who's saying it sucks. I have this knife. I know the steel can stand up to heavy use, so even going by YOUR logic, the only way that you could have trouble using this knife is if you're misusing it. Alternatively, you judge a knife on its attributes (i.e. made in China) rather than its actual performance, in which case you can take your ignorance, prejudice and arm shavers somewhere else
9ooglesuxballs 9 months ago
@9ooglesuxballs You know something , your amazing. All you had to do in the beginning is just say I have this knife and I like it , and that would have been the end of it. My response would have been something like , well if you like it and it , then more power to you. There's no need to drop $200.00 on a ZT , or go to someone like Jeff Claiborne or myself for a $500.00 custom if that knife suits your needs. And that would have been the end of it. But nooooooooooo , you have to turn this into
Taz0161 9 months ago
a 20 paragraph immature piss fight , drop silly ridiculous weak ass arguments about thin bevels and shit , apparently you haven't got the first dam clue on sharpening. So to end this , # 1 my prejudices are first hand experiences , my logic is scientific , and as far as ignorance goes , what you don't know about cutlery can fill 4 books. And the best word I can come up with to describe you totally is , You're An ASS ! in every sense of the word. Now live with that.
Taz0161 9 months ago
Maybe I'll come over and shave your mothers pussy , how about that ? ROFLMAO
Taz0161 9 months ago
@Taz0161 "My prejudices are first hand experiences" - you need to go and drop $30.00 on a dictionary. My problem isn't with you disliking this knife, or with your knife usage, or even with your sheer stupidity. The reason I started this was because you said Chinese steel (and knives as you later implied) is shit, which as anyone who knows anything anout knives can tell you, is completely untrue.
