In regards to whether or not the Mario Brothers' last names are in fact Mario - this assumption is based on the 1993 movie "Super Mario Bros." In the movie, Luigi (played by John Leguizamo) states that their last names are Mario. That was the first time this was stated to be true; no other place in the canon states this.

The problem with this is that that movie was *terrible* and really doesn't have very much to do with the game franchise at all. So, is it really canon? It could go either way.

@007JackBourne I didn't really put this forward as a theory, just a statement of fact - nowhere in the games is it made explicit what their last names are. That there is still some debate about this is what makes it humorous when Wario inquires about it in this episode.

Logical conclusions aside, I feel pretty confident that when Nintendo first released Super Mario Bros. they didn't seriously consider that it would be an issue of contention. After all, it is simply a game meant to entertain.
