Paice is my fave drummer, I like him in burn,, even the studio version he abs kills it. A good lessons for todays drummers, I just say listen to burn for inspiration.
His solos are nothing like this today. He changed a long time ago. The last time he played in this all-out, frantic style was around '82, in Gary Moore's "Hurricane".
In 1993 in his Lazy solo he showed that he could still do it. What's of certainty is that he was in fairly decent shape in this solo...today he's in fairly poor physical health compared to in this video. Ginger Baker seems to have lost his wild side too. Although as a musician myself I'm not sure age has anything to do with it...my guess is he chooses not to play this way because his tastes in soloing changed.
@nazzare79 He may have improved with age in terms of his skills, but I would seriously doubt at the age of 62 that he could play with the kind of ferocious and unrelenting energy he plays with here in this solo at the age of 26. Although I could be wrong...the only real way to know what a drummer is capable of is to sit down with him and tell him to play certain stuff.
@jetfreak4 I saw many recent of his drums solo and I can't say he changed a little bit his playing...less ferocious but more refined...He is an incredible drummer with a peculiar style and I found him a lot underrated and better than Bonham for sure...just watch for ex."- first drum solo - live @ Castelmassa - 18 12 2010" from 1:30 on or "speed king (paice view)" or the solo from NEC 2002...the use of the single pedal and the rolls are MASSIVE!
Paice is, without doubt, one of the fastest and most accurate drummers around. He is a phenomena to witness at a live concert. In my top 5 favorites, for sure...
With all due respect, a lot of musicians don't stand the test of time. But Ian Paice was one of my father's favorite drummers - and he's one of mine nowadays! His playing is still amazing and powerful, and on top of it, he seems to be one of the nicest gentleman in Rock'n Roll.
Ian Paice is the perfect drummer in my opinion. Amazing skills and amazing groove, plus amazing sound. He can play with the power of Bonzo and with the swing of Buddy Rich.
@jetfreak4 I also forgot to mention that IMO Paice may be as good as Bonzo on the bass drum. IMO, Bonzo has the best right foot, Paice has the best left foot.
@kamurandeliormanli First off learn how to type with proper grammar. Second, that is an extremely narrow-minded way of looking at a drummer. Is Ian Paice one of the greatest rock drummers? Without a doubt. Is he the absolute greatest rock drummer? That's hard to say. Ginger Baker, John Bonham, Neil Peart, Stewart Copeland, and Carl Palmer are all equally as competent. So saying he clearly is the best is subjective at best.
Ian Paice and John Bonham are the kings of triplets. Both of them are my two top influences as a drummer. They embody what I like in a drummer...unpredictability, sophistication, amazing sound, amazing speed, calm one minute, crazy the next...most of all they can groove like hell. Not a single beat you can't dance to in either The Mule or Moby Dick.
This solo is so much fun to play, but trying to isolate the sounds of the bass and toms during triplets at that speed, plus getting your hands and feet to cooperate in sync, is hard as hell. I love the groove of this solo. It's explosive at the right times, and calm at the right times.
@nemephis It ain't just about practicing, it's about learning the rudiments, and doing it over an extremely long period of time. You can't just practice endlessly and hope to get it one day...you have to do it correctly, you have to really want to learn it, and you have to practice it until you get it. It may be an easy principle, but if it were that easy, you'd see millions of Ian Paices all over the world. Few have the discipline to get as far as him.
I saw Don Brewer, Ian Paice, Neal Pert in person....this argument about WHO is the better drummer is ridiculous.....each drummer was great for his own respective band. I wonder how many drummers are actually posting this stuff here....Neal Pert would tell you that he wouldn't have been as good for Deep Purple as Ian Paice was and vice versa....every band has it's own style, and so does every drummer...they grow WITH the band, not on their own....
Fine, your opinion is your opinion. I think Neil is a great drummer, but to say he's better than Paice is a tough call. if you're a drummer like me, you should realize this. Stop putting other bands down just to promote the one you think is best. Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Cream, Rush, The Police, Black Sabbath...very difficult to say who was better. All equally gifted in their own ways as musicians and songwriters. And these bands are just the tip of the iceberg.
@jetfreak4 not putting down anyone I just simply think Neil is a better all around drummer in his abilities. Blackmore is a better guitarist than Alex but to me Alex wins hands down for originality. I like and have seen live Purple twice on the Perfect Strangers tour and Sabbath with Dio and Ozzy on his Blizzard of Oz tour. The Police were quite good very early. Oh and I kinda like Neils lyrical abilities. Both Purple and Rush made/.make music that they want to. Not many bands can do that.
Fine, you like the mule better, good for you, but jimmypage is right in his analogy. The Mule is the signature drum solo of Deep Purple, just like Moby Dick was of Led Zeppelin and Toad was of Cream. They are all very different types of solos, each well worth being high up on the greatest rock drum solos list. Anybody else's thoughts but your's anyday. If you are a drummer, like I am, you should have figured out that each of these solos are difficult in their own ways.
@jetfreak4 What's dumb about it. So I like PAICE better than BONHAM. What's the big Fucking deal. I also like Buddy Rich, Ginger Baker, Cozy Powell, Louie Bellson, Max Roach, and Ringo Starr better than Bonham. Bonham was a great drummer but he's not my favorite. I find him extremely over rated. Drumming doesn't begin and end with Bonham in my opinion.
You could have just said I like Paice better than Bonham. And quite frankly, he's not overrated...i don't think he is necessarily the best rock drummer, but he's one of them. Same as Paice. Trying to compare these two is like apples and oranges. What's dumb is that you try to say that because you think Paice is better than Bonham, he is. Keep it to yourself, or find a way to say it that's not provocative, if you're mature enough.
@jetfreak4 It's called an opinion. I have the right to give it in away shape or form. I think Paice is a better Drummer. That's my opinion. You can think Bonham is better or not, there's no right or wrong here.
Ian Paice has always been my favorite drummer... his is the classic rock drummer..he has influenced so many drummers , including Matt Sorum and Chad Smith among others....he has 'taste'...he is able to play ghost notes like no one else...and I consider myself luck to see him in concert live, and to just get blown away...
from 1:43 to 2:20 this is a majestic display of virtousism, tell any drummer you know to play exactly what Paice does in just that few seconds and you´ll find everyone wil tlell "I CAN´T". Paice is not a drummer, He is a master of drummers, He is part of the highest triad: Bonham, Moon & Paice
That is the most retarded statement I've ever heard. Rudimental drummers....Baker and Bonham are every bit as good as Paice is. With Keith Moon, I agree, only because he was not a fantastic soloist.
@Poth1223 Tough to say...Moby Dick from How The West Was Won goes up there too, as does Neil Peart's Der Trommler. They are all very different solos (Toad, The Mule, and Moby Dick all vary by each performance), each one challenging in their own ways. There is no winner here in my opinion. There is no doubt however that without Ginger Baker's Toad, and the solos that preceded it, solos that followed wouldn't exist. Ginger Baker is responsible for paving the way for rock drummers to solo.
Keith Moon is not even in the same league as Ian Paice, John Bonham, Ginger Baker, Carl Palmer, Neil Peart, Mitch Mitchell, Stewart Copeland, Bill Ward, Cozy Powell, etc. I've never understood what the deal is with him being so great. And we're not even getting into the jazz greats like Buddy Rich, Billy Cobham, Steve Gadd, Vinnie Colaita, Dave Weckl, Ed Shaughnessy, etc....Keith Moon is WAY on the bottom compared to the jazz greats, as is any rock drummer. The Who was even able to replace him.
@crunkalac That's who I said. He's been rated as number 20 on the greatest rock drummers list. There is one Black Sabbath song on one of their CD's where he gets to go into at least a 2 minute solo that actually sounds almost as impressive as this does. He has incredible groove and speed. You're the first person I've heard put him down. At any rate, you think what you want. I know a good drummer when I hear one, and Bill Ward is a fantastic drummer. You couldn't be in Black Sabbath otherwise.
@jetfreak4 Exactly, Bill Ward is the most bad-ass drummer of all-time. Nobody pounded the drums harder. He's a very humble guy too and has always considered himself to be an average drummer and loves to learn from other drummers, even young ones. Personally he is my favorite drummer because of what he added to every Sabbath song. He was not into drum solos.
"War Pigs" sounds like a ten piece set but it's only three. "Symptom of the Universe" = Most powerful drums in any song ever.
@crunkalac . No my friend, Ward is not as good as Paice, perhaps you like the sabbath music more than purple, but that´s not the case. I don´t know what list you read, but you only have to compare them side by side and you´ll find Paice is better by far. it´s the firts time I hear someone claiming Ward´s better than Paice.
I respond of the current vid. It's a drum solo..this song is minor. Don't know about you there? 6-8, wellremined of the respect of Richie! Still, soundscapes are going to the direction, that what was up is coming down, why don't we see fingerwork mr.Slinger, the drummer looks elderly!
@elouroeides nothing wrong with Nicko, I love Maiden's stuff. BUT Nicko seems to play drums like a guitarist! Ian is something else. I had the pleasure to see a great clinic with him, I can say he's also a great person, very down to earth and funny. Look for Ian Paice rudiments: you will see his amazing hands technique and simplycity
I understand why. I've been playing drums for about 4 years now, and Paice is one of my heroes. He is a perfect fusion of jazz and rock. Playing his style is fun as hell, plus i've learned how to get more technical thanks to his demonstrations on his technique. It's awesome he's willing pass his skills along to others. It's helped accelerate my progression dramatically. My biggest influences are Buddy Rich, Ian Paice, Ginger Baker, John Bonham, Steve Gadd, Stewart Copeland, and Neil Peart.
just watch the video here on you tube writing speed king Paice view and you will understand why Paice is still the best drummer in rock and surely better than Bonham...both great styles but Paice is surely better...Bonzo is too overrated...
Youre a real idiot, how come the kids who are better and are in the basement are not doing it asshole.Ian pace is a very respected drummer who has more experience and feel than you will ever have , Talentless moron.
I saw Deep Purple about a month ago in Glasgow, and although they're past their prime, it's sad to think they're still better than just about any musicians today.
Ian Paice was absolutely incredible at Fireball, and I was so disappointed he didn't do this :P:P:P.
E poi cosa vuol dire rudimentale?
its worthless saying who the best is-Palmer, Ginger Baker, Copeland, Bonham, Moon, Headon, etc all great
guitarists, another waste of time. Richard Thompson for example, is ignored by most Americans yet Page and Clapton both acknowledged how good he truly is.
I think that Ian Pace is the best drummer in history instead of John Bohnam. What do you think? It's very difficult to decide. Ian Paice is faster, but Bohnam was more polyvalent.
I think, the business affords extreme ego-maniacs and produces and leaves behind technical semi-gods (not GODS, only Jesus Christ is GOD) and social wrecks and real assholes, addicted to drugs and sex and totally unreal lifestyles, that's the way it goes, only a less number of successful rockstars stays clean and fit for society. It is terrible to dare a look into their private lifes, in spite of all the money and fun they waste!
yeah, you're right. on that clip their drum sets are, very, very similar. Both are Ludwig's kits with one bass drum, one tom and 2 floar toms. But Ian changed his kit quite a lot later on: the brand was changed to Pearl, a double pedal and four more toms were added.
ian paice is the perfect "teacher" to the kids who wants to begin to be a serious technical drummer. john bonham is great, awesome groove and other stuff. but ian paice is the genius of intelligence and insane of rock drumming with kick drum, snare, 2 floor toms, 1 tom-tom, hi-hat, 2 crashes, ride and breathing problems :).
when people ask me who was my 1st inspiration. it's no doubt - ian paice!
What kinda weed ure smokin?? Paice with 4 toms and 4 x brass was 2 times quicker and more brilliant than Palmer with his monster-equipment of 40 parts or so! Palmer doubtless is brilliant too, but no compare to PAICE please!!
Ian Paice was a big primer for todays drummers.

Hard as hell, you say - but isn't it the trick to practice so much that it'll go automagically?
(And yeah, you've gotta have a certain degree of rythm in your blood, as mr. Paice and all other drummers with 'swing' in their play have).

You couldn't be in Black Sabbath otherwise.
jetfreak4 1 year ago
@jetfreak4 yeah i wasnt being sarcastic to me hes the best drummer ever he makes the song
crunkalac 1 year ago
@jetfreak4 Exactly, Bill Ward is the most bad-ass drummer of all-time. Nobody pounded the drums harder. He's a very humble guy too and has always considered himself to be an average drummer and loves to learn from other drummers, even young ones. Personally he is my favorite drummer because of what he added to every Sabbath song. He was not into drum solos.
"War Pigs" sounds like a ten piece set but it's only three. "Symptom of the Universe" = Most powerful drums in any song ever.
gl797 1 year ago
@gl797 Ward laid down great tracks for Sabbath, but not a great soloist.
charlessavarese 1 year ago
@crunkalac . No my friend, Ward is not as good as Paice, perhaps you like the sabbath music more than purple, but that´s not the case. I don´t know what list you read, but you only have to compare them side by side and you´ll find Paice is better by far. it´s the firts time I hear someone claiming Ward´s better than Paice.
Anyway I enjoyed the work of ward too.

That Ian Paice, I love, you deserve a monument and the rest of the group as well, but a little smaller

Ian Paice is good..very good.. BUT '...Nicko McBrain from Maiden is better..
54Chiavazza 1 year ago
@54Chiavazza Ahahahaha!!! Very funny! Nicko is a good drummer, perfect for Maiden, but nothin' else...
Ian Paice is great in every stile, with 2 of the greatest hands of rock drumming and a swing-funk taste and groove that Nicko could only dream
LukeBerto 1 year ago 16
@LukeBerto i completely agree with you :) but nicko is stil good :)
elouroeides 9 months ago
@elouroeides nothing wrong with Nicko, I love Maiden's stuff. BUT Nicko seems to play drums like a guitarist! Ian is something else. I had the pleasure to see a great clinic with him, I can say he's also a great person, very down to earth and funny. Look for Ian Paice rudiments: you will see his amazing hands technique and simplycity

I've been playing drums for 45 years...watch this video and you'll know why Ian Paice is and always will be my #1 influence.
GregOnDrums 1 year ago
I understand why. I've been playing drums for about 4 years now, and Paice is one of my heroes. He is a perfect fusion of jazz and rock. Playing his style is fun as hell, plus i've learned how to get more technical thanks to his demonstrations on his technique. It's awesome he's willing pass his skills along to others. It's helped accelerate my progression dramatically. My biggest influences are Buddy Rich, Ian Paice, Ginger Baker, John Bonham, Steve Gadd, Stewart Copeland, and Neil Peart.

I saw Deep Purple about a month ago in Glasgow, and although they're past their prime, it's sad to think they're still better than just about any musicians today.
Ian Paice was absolutely incredible at Fireball, and I was so disappointed he didn't do this :P:P:P.

vincenzogiacomi 2 years ago
E poi cosa vuol dire rudimentale?

its worthless saying who the best is-Palmer, Ginger Baker, Copeland, Bonham, Moon, Headon, etc all great
guitarists, another waste of time. Richard Thompson for example, is ignored by most Americans yet Page and Clapton both acknowledged how good he truly is.

I think that Ian Pace is the best drummer in history instead of John Bohnam. What do you think? It's very difficult to decide. Ian Paice is faster, but Bohnam was more polyvalent.
alamierdaelnicky 2 years ago 2
they're both have their own style. I like both of them. Bonham's sound is legend. Bonham's foot work and his powerful sound are amazing.

tizioincognito95 2 years ago 3
I think, the business affords extreme ego-maniacs and produces and leaves behind technical semi-gods (not GODS, only Jesus Christ is GOD) and social wrecks and real assholes, addicted to drugs and sex and totally unreal lifestyles, that's the way it goes, only a less number of successful rockstars stays clean and fit for society. It is terrible to dare a look into their private lifes, in spite of all the money and fun they waste!
keybwizzard 2 years ago
he got similar drum setup as john bonham, but in the left hand side

noooo is very very different....
Luiginoy 2 years ago
yeah, you're right. on that clip their drum sets are, very, very similar. Both are Ludwig's kits with one bass drum, one tom and 2 floar toms. But Ian changed his kit quite a lot later on: the brand was changed to Pearl, a double pedal and four more toms were added.

ian paice is the perfect "teacher" to the kids who wants to begin to be a serious technical drummer. john bonham is great, awesome groove and other stuff. but ian paice is the genius of intelligence and insane of rock drumming with kick drum, snare, 2 floor toms, 1 tom-tom, hi-hat, 2 crashes, ride and breathing problems :).
when people ask me who was my 1st inspiration. it's no doubt - ian paice!
his my number one!

What kinda weed ure smokin?? Paice with 4 toms and 4 x brass was 2 times quicker and more brilliant than Palmer with his monster-equipment of 40 parts or so! Palmer doubtless is brilliant too, but no compare to PAICE please!!
