Bette realized her mistake about this film. That's why she left. I think the biggest mistake for Cohen was to convince her to look "Attractive". If she would have chosen a look similar to her last 2 films (As Summers Die and Whales of August) in which she appears as a woman of her age, i think it would have been better. Let's face it people. Work was her life. She couldn't function otherwise.
"You didn't wake me. I was reading a sexy novel." That is hilarious! I wish she would have completed this movie. I would have loved to have seen the entire movie.
Lucille Ball, Joan Crawford, and Bette Davis always feared bad material at hand when they were nearing the ends of their acting career. However, they were dedicated veterans to keep working, no matter how bad the movies were. Joan Crawford with Trog. Lucille Ball with her final series called Life With Lucy. Bette Davis with Wicked Stepmother. Both were very anxious to work and yet they always feared bad material, which in the end they were subjected to have. Though Bette had Whales of August.
poor bette, its true that she enjoyed playing crazy characters, but she was rather typecast in the last few decades of her career, she was brilliant at what she did, an immortal legends
But she continued to act in movies that were beneath her. She seemed to have no vanity, no awareness of what was appropriate for a legend. Which makes her the exact opposite of Katharine Hepburn.
Opposite of Hepburn, yes. Both were New England gals, yes. Both had balls no other actresses at the time had. They just swung them in different ways. Love them both.
If Bette Davis had agonized over what was "appropriate" at any given moment in history she would've labored in minor crap for the studios for years and fizzled out at 40 like hundreds of other starlets. She took charge, took risks and even with this film in her resume, she remains a legend.
@mangrovesea I must contradict you on that one. Hepburn also had her share of bad movies. Also Bette did very much junk betwweb 1966-1976 because she has a family and an ill sister to support. She needed the money. But after 1976 she did only prestigious projects (check her filmography). Even after her stroke in 83/84 she did quality films like "Murder with Mirrors" (with Helen Hayes), "As Summers Die" (she was brilliant in it) and of course "The Whales of August".
I so wish i knew what the original script was like for this. If only it couldve been completed. They re use the same scene twice of her taking a heavy puff of her cigarette, when they are making her disappear. Bette you did a fantastic job for your last few scenes.
Forget the bad movie! Betty Davis is so funny it's great if u just watch her parts:)

Funny, I have a feeling Meryl Streep isn't too far from playing a Wicked Stepmother herself.

I love this as a final Bette Davis movie. I think she liked the idea of going out as a witch. She never cared about looks, just crazy characters.
She was/is my hero as an American Actress.
