Never thought I'd EVER be defending the intelligence of Sarah Palin but I don't think her answer is as stupid as it's being made out to be.
Far as I can tell she's saying that democracy is what the US should be upholding so long as it's the democracies of the friends of America. In that region Israel is the friend of the US and Hamas are their enemies which means that America should disregard their democracy in order to support Israel against Hamas (said to be funded by Iran = bad guys).
