Religion confuses me. But If someone was somehow able to persuad me that God exists, that person then would have to somehow convince me that that God is Good. Because from everything I've read in the Bible, God sounds like a hateful, meanspirited being. A lonely omnipotent, omnipresent being who wants to be loved and will horribly punish anyone who doesn't love him. Murder, Genocide, Human/Animal Sacrafice, Rape, its all in the Bible and God is behind most of it. Sounds like a pretty shitty God.

I was reared fundamentalist creationist christian, and began reading creationist literature to bolster my wavering faith.
Eventually I began also checking out books written by the evolutionists who were "quoted" in the ID books I had read, and was shocked to realize that creationism is based on semantic arguments and intellectual dishonesty, while evolutionary theory is based on evidence and the honest struggle to understand what that evidence can tell us about reality.

Um.. I think you may have missed my point. Not everyone who is religious is irrational. I have many friend who believe in God and go to church and are completely competent and understanding people.
I think I may know what you're talking about with "Jesus Camp", and I'm not denying in some cases people take it too far, but Dawkin's is saying you can't believe in God and be rational together, which is just idiotic.
He's saying that you can't have a literal portrayal of religion and be rational towards science! It is a sort of psychological disease through brainwashing. Just look at all the brainwashed people on you tube watching worship music videos. Search "hillsong united" and look at some of the conversations. You definitely didn't read "The God Delusion".
Now we're just selecting over-the-top extremist groups of religious people. I never denied that there are some brainwashed people out there, but as I said before I have friends who are devout believers in a higher being, yet are still able to understand and believe in evolutionary theories.

To assume, in all cases, that those who believe in god are irrational is idiotic. Belief in God doesn't mean someone is irrational towards Science, but believing in the stories written in The Bible does. The evolution of speicies doesn't disprove God, it disproves The Bible. God and The Bible are to separate things.
Atheists have never claimed to have disproved the existence of God. Atheism is nothing more than the disbelief of a God, not the belief that science disproved existence. Furthermore Christianity is not the only religion. There are countless mythologies which have described a variety of deities throughout time. No God can be separated from the mythology that describes it and to believe in such a God is even more irrational than basing your beliefs on scripture.

@ExxonPirate That sounds a lot like deism, as TaeGaruma34 said. This was the faith of people like Einstein, Jefferson, and many other great minds. Dawkins is an atheist insofar as a personal god is concerned, but does concede that deism is (albeit unlikely) possible.
It's important to make it noteworthy that people whom adhere to the concept of deity's/gods aren't necessarily "irrational" to Science, but ignorant of it. But purposely ignorant, otherwise, it would incessantly clash with their faith. Science and theology are unequivocal.
I agree that Dawkins delivery is a bit crass. But I also believe it MUST be! I share in his disgust of people who not only believe these out-dated religious myths, but who also indoctrinate their children with this intellectually sucidal and idiotic way of thinking. And I commend Dawkins for taking such a staunch stance against these dogmas and for standing up for the rights of children to not be lied to. I was a victim of this and I cringe at the thought of children in church. Its child abuse!

The virus of religion takes over the mind completely if allowed, especially if ingrained into the mind from childhood. It was difficult enough for me to escape religious axioms and I am still recovering from the damage it has caused me three years later. Hi sarah67act, I wanted to ask you, is there not, thousands of ancient manuscripst quoting the bible for as early as the first century, did they not find dead sea scrolls, of the old testament, dating back B.C, quoting the bible word for word. You do realize that Atheist scientist, did not support the big bang theory. With as arrogant and rude that Richard Dawkins is to everybody, the fact that none of these people started swinging on him is a testiment to the value and result of faith.
This guy is teaching lies and hate to this children just to fulfill his personal interests, and he knows it (he's not that stupid to really believe AIDS is caused by sinning). Banning religion would make people commit crimes because there is no higher authority than us(God). Having said that, believing in a religion and killing for a God makes people do bigger crimes than believing in NO God because LEADERS of the world believe in a God and because of this, they wage war on one another whoever opposes them.
So either way, people will keep on killing each other no matter if they believe in god or not.

I think he's overhamming it a little. I went to chatholic schools from the age of 4 till 17, and i don't believe in god, nor am i perticurlaly religious.
You definitely are right to an extent. I know many people just like you. I think you have to realize though how zealous a number of these places are. I may be wrong but I also suspect that even when science is offered in religious schools, it is in severe danger of not really being taught thoroughly and passionately enough in relation to religion. Anyone teaching Evolution as "only a theory" definitely is not giving it what it deserves.
That said, Dawkins does really go to town when it comes to religion. I'm not suporting religion or anything, after all, it has casued a hell of a lot of touble in the past and still does today, but to call it the root of all evil is going overbored.

It is not only the case for fundamentalist Christians, it is also seen with many fundamentalist muslims. I was born and raised in Turkey and now living in Canada, and i must say, on news when i was a kid, it was mostly religious people or imams who abused some kids or young girls by force or permission from their parents. Of course those religious families are cruel as many of those fundamentalists when it comes to the abusive sex. They are just obsessed with weird sex stuff.

Good for Richard Dawkins for taking up this cause. I believe nearly every religious person would agree when thinking about any other belief system but their own-however they know that their belief system would not be exempt, so they quickly denounce it in fear of that hell fire shown at the end.

I have a cousin who has cancer and all my friends and family are praying expressing irrational beliefs. Replace this 'religious support' in the form of praying to the sky and use a more productive method of helping your cousin. Respect is earned by your actions, not by the similarities in yours and your families beliefs. Personally i'd be there as much as possible for your cousin and support him/her physically and mentally. If this dosn't work then your family are disillusioned by faith and overlook other values you have.

Religion confuses me. But If someone was somehow able to persuad me that God exists, that person then would have to somehow convince me that that God is Good. Because from everything I've read in the Bible, God sounds like a hateful, meanspirited being. A lonely omnipotent, omnipresent being who wants to be loved and will horribly punish anyone who doesn't love him. I was raised a catholic in elementary and high school. During undergrad, I became an agnostic. I am now leaning towards militant atheism.

Using an anecdote to illustrate, religion caused me some amount of trauma as a child. When I reflect back, I am am now so outraged that I was indoctrinated with that bullshit.

Eventually I began also checking out books written by the evolutionists who were "quoted" in the ID books I had read, and was shocked to realize that creationism is based on semantic arguments and intellectual dishonesty, while evolutionary theory is based on evidence and the honest struggle to understand what that evidence can tell us about reality.

Atheists have never claimed to have disproved the existence of God. Atheism is nothing more than the disbelief of a God, not the belief that science disproved existence. Furthermore Christianity is not the only religion. There are countless mythologies which have described a variety of deities throughout time. No God can be separated from the mythology that describes it and to believe in such a God is even more irrational than basing your beliefs on scripture.

I agree that Dawkins delivery is a bit crass. But I also believe it MUST be! I share in his disgust of people who not only believe these out-dated religious myths, but who also indoctrinate their children with this intellectually sucidal and idiotic way of thinking. And I commend Dawkins for taking such a staunch stance against these dogmas and for standing up for the rights of children to not be lied to. I was a victim of this and I cringe at the thought of children in church. Its child abuse!

I spent a few years of my "education" in the ACE curriculum.
I could write pages regarding the areas that sorry excuse for an educational system failed me.
I can't believe the government allows children to be taught the garbage I had to learn.
Even as a child I remember reading thing in my booklets and thinking, "...that doesn't make sense." It was confusing to me because I was raised to believe that the bible was true.
In my mid-teens I was smart enough to realize the truth. Thank god. ;)

I am without sin. Sin is breaking gods rules. Since there is no more likelihood of there being a god than there is of there being an Odin or Zeus, I can't have broken a fictional characters rules can I? I get morality from the same place that you do, society. Being good matters because it allows social creatures to survive and interact. It is a social construct. My standards come from taking responsibility for my actions. Not from sinning and repenting over and over. Your religion teaches you that you aren't responsible for your wrong doings because you are a child of god and if you ask for his forgiveness you will be given it. That's the point, they believe that the first 2 people on this planet were fashioned out of dirt and devine breath in a garden with a talking snake by the hands of an invisible god. And if you have a working knowledge of history, you'd know this was 1,000 years after the Sumerian's invented glue. I hope this clears up the point I was trying to make. This was well written in one of Sam Harris' books. So I paraphrased it for you. :)

Banning religion would make people commit crimes because there is no higher authority than us(God). Having said that, believing in a religion and killing for a God makes people do bigger crimes than believing in NO God because LEADERS of the world believe in a God and because of this, they wage war on one another whoever opposes them.
So either way, people will keep on killing each other no matter if they believe in god or not.

Why not? Why should jews be treated any differently to other religions? They still believe crazy and unprovable things about the world. Its only because of the holocaust that people are afraid to criticise jews in anyway for fear of being called anti semetic. That really isnt fair. Judaism, Christianity and Islam all believe fairly similar things and were all from the same part of the world. They should all be treated the same as the things they all believe are totally ridiculous.

Yes, but you're looking at RELIGION. Christianity's fundamentals is NOT a religion, and when PEOPLE tried to create an institution based on Christianity, they started acting "in the name of God", but lost sight of what Christianity really is. It all began with the horrors of the Church. Doesn't necessairly mean Christianity is BAD.

Faith is belief without evidence or in spite of it, belief is unprovable and religion isd downright evil. No its really very simple. If someone belives thing which cannot possibly be true (Gods, Unicorns, Santa Claus or Fairies for example), things which cannot be proved and have no evidence to beck them up then they are considered insane. There is as little evidence for the existance of Gods as there is for the existance of Unicorns and thus anyone who believes in God is either mad, bad or stupid. I.e they are either mentally ill, deliberately lying or have been duped into believing by others.

You definitely are right to an extent. I know many people just like you. I think you have to realize though how zealous a number of these places are. I may be wrong but I also suspect that even when science is offered in religious schools, it is in severe danger of not really being taught thoroughly and passionately enough in relation to religion. Anyone teaching Evolution as "only a theory" definitely is not giving it what it deserves.

Christianity, especially fundamentalist Christianity leads people to become sexually repressed (Ted Haggart, anyone?), unthinking, and to have an overall negative and helpless view of themselves (no matter what you do, the Bible's rules are set up in such a way that you can't help but sin i.e. stone people to death, but thou shalt not kill). I'm still coming to terms with the damage religion has done to me.

It is not only the case for fundamentalist Christians, it is also seen with many fundamentalist muslims. I was born and raised in Turkey and now living in Canada, and i must say, on news when i was a kid, it was mostly religious people or imams who abused some kids or young girls by force or permission from their parents. Of course those religious families are cruel as many of those fundamentalists when it comes to the abusive sex. They are just obsessed with weird sex stuff.

I went threw the A.C.E. program in Manitoba, Canada. The curriculum was brought up to us from the southern baptists in the states. These people are dangerous, I know that evangelical christian and all religous indoctrination is abuse, I went threw it my whole life.

Atheists MUST speak out against irrational religion!!! We canNOT be silent!! PLEASE help open the minds of our society!! What can I do to spread the word??? I have a cousin who has cancer and all my friends and family are praying expressing irrational beliefs. I don't want them to dislike me or think I don't care for my cousin's welfare if I tell them I'm athiest. Yet, I don't want to tolerate irrational superstition. How can I be honest about my disbelief but not be shunned by my family??

Replace this 'religious support' in the form of praying to the sky and use a more productive method of helping your cousin. Respect is earned by your actions, not by the similarities in yours and your families beliefs. Personally i'd be there as much as possible for your cousin and support him/her physically and mentally. If this dosn't work then your family are disillusioned by faith and overlook other values you have.

No faith promotes fear and hatred. It depends on the capacity of the person who is teaching faith that he installs fear and hatred, not the religion.
