I can listen to this over and over again! Perfectiong! Lots of them are trying to do it after her, but none of them as good as this (Aprile Millo is the 2nd next).
I thought I knew the genius of La Divina. This is thrilling. I am in tears. The musicianship, and mastery, and pure emotion married to the voice. Amazing. Bel Cantanista. Brava!
It is amazing. I just listened to Millo perform this same note but it was nowhere near as penetrating or perfectly done as La Callas, and she did not hold it as long as Callas. Amazing.
@tamarexxe In the "Aida" at the Municipal in Rio de Janeiro, Aprile Millo delivered a stunning E-flat the same as Callas: big and long, covering everything: orchestra, chorus and other solists. The audience jumped off their seats shouting "Bravo!" as if Brazil had scored a goal and won the Soccer World Cup! And people were throwing their programs in the air. In all my life of over 50 years watching opera all over the world I have never witness anything like that anywhere in the world.

Beautiful, and it's amazing what the initial Jade took the Mexican public, and had not given myself that having lived so glorious and impressive moment of Maria Callas.
Maybe it was just an ornament, but it was the perfect adornment and mythologized as "The acute in Mexico."
That E-flat is so visceral and primal (yet still in character although it is not written), you can almost feel your own neck and your stomach muscles engage as if you were singing the note along with her. That being said, the perfectly placed glory of that E-flat (dominating chorus, orchestra and soloists I might add) isn't what made her the icon she is- it's her artistry, her sacrifice and her contribution to art that made her a megastar. Brava, La Callas! All others pale in comparison!
Correct me if I am wrong, but she did this a year earlier to squeeze the balls of arrogant tenor Kurt Baum, with Simionato as Amneris. Apparently, Maria, superb professional that she was, complained to Giulietta that Baum was holding onto his high notes way beyond the measure, and she wanted to trump him once and for all, but only after the cast and conductor gave their permission. What came out was even greater than this, an E-flat that started in Slovenia and wound up in Guatemala, 20 beats!
GOOD NEWS dear Callas fans!!!! Striker capitulates! The automated production of feces is over. He's a nervous wreck because the great Filaredo gang has destroyed the white knight on his black donkey. and as I posted on the other site, just to let you know,
Mexico city is a mile and 1/2 above sea level, even the athletes preparing for the 1968 olympics complained how much harder they had to prepare because of this, singers
are no different, which makes Callas fabulous never ending E flat even more impressive!
That final high Eb was truly VOLCANIC! This is no "scream'! A "scream" doesn't have an even vibrato. It goes "straight" and hasn't a chance of carrying, much less dominating, an Ensemble of 3 soloists, huge chorus and orchestra.
That is no scream, it is PERFECTION - rock solid and on pitch - a clarion blast which one can only IMAGINE must have sounded like in person - - this was 1951 people, that tumultuous applause and reception was NOT for a SCREAM, she was next to unknown, it was applause for a revelation! Acknowledgement for a SINGER and ARTIST, often rarely combined. Brava! I can not listen to this aria now without comparison, no one has touched this delivery!
One more thing. Bellas artes appears to be unimportant in the eyes of these ridiculous Euro-cockeyed elitists. That is why this is the only recording of the laureate moment in which the monotonous world of Opera was ruptured by the extraordinary Callas phenomenon. Also on the scream comment. Humm...Interesting scream with a perfectly sustained vibratto. Besides who is this critic? Maybe he/she sings in his/her living room hence the analogy.

Callas sings a Bflat in "gloria all egitto, AH !" , that note is written for the tenor, NOT for the soprano. Then at the end Verdi wrote several terrible Bflats and two final terrible Bs, the singer must soar in the soprano line over the chorus, all the soloists, instruments, etc...Callas cannot be heard
What impresses me even more than the Eb is the preparation for it!
Instead of what any soprano I know would have done, shut-up-and-wait-for-the-big-moment, She dominates the ensemble giving Del Monaco a run for his money, while he sings notes that Verdi did NOT write for the tenor: the B-Flats and C-flats(=that is how Verdi noted them...)

Let me absoloutely clear.
El Palacio de Bellas Artes de México is WITHOUT question a second tier house. There are only SIX top tier and SIX in this second tier category. A GREAT honour. Its importance and ranking internationally cannot be disputed.
Mamma mia! Now that is what Opera is all about...Del Monaco, Dominguez, Taddei, De Fabritiis, et al, and Maria Callas singing a High Eb over everything and loud enough to awaken Isis and Osiris both. Just thrilling, Bravi Tutti! We don't get this good anymore.
That's because youre personlity is dull is why shje doesn't impress you,no one can help the way you where born that's a genetic flaw. Besides she gave her all like a true artist not 50/50 or less like most who try and last for ever. The bad thing about it is regardless of how long and well presrved they think their voices are you can stil hear that they are old especially a soprano they go sour fastr than male voices.
wow it seems Callas is the navel the umbilical cord of the world.Beleive me I wish she would have a voice without so many flaws and distresses being the umbilical cord of the world as she seems for you.
Her 1951 voice dissapoints me too. When she sang in Mexico she ordered to put a billboard, a cartel with lights in the theater "Maria Meneghini the world greatest prima donna".Poor Maria, she sang at Palacio Bellas Artes in Mexico city...the size of that 3rd rate house is like a shoes box
Poor lorengrinteo doesn't realize that Pelacio de bella Artes is Mexico's finest and most famous theatre not theiur third class rate. And don't forget La scala,Teatro Communale,Verona Arena where she sand La Gioconda in 1952 just to name a few of the biggest and the best in Italy where she's renown.
get a life you dumb azz ;). honestly people like u are a waste of human flesh tsk tsk lol. Your like a real pollution to humanity. & thats fierce ! ;).
You´re such an ignorant. Obviously you haven´t been at Palacio de Bellas Artes de México and second it isn´t a third rate house. Other wise La Scala wouldn´t go there. It is one of the most important theaters in Latin America. And 1951 was part of her great period.
Lohengrinteo, where did you get this absurd idea that Callas could order to put the billboard? The Mexicans were the first to recognise she was (and still is) the greatest primadonna of the century and all times!
Callas cannot be heard in the complete ensemble scene, she had to sing this unmusical and lyrical Lucìa note at the end to be heard, the only moment of the triumphal scene when she is heard. The Eflat is a scream
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You and others like youreself should seriously look into a differen't hobby because surely if it's not youre age of 65,i think you may have been born with a tin ear or just bad hearing judgement and that's the reason for youre dislike of true greatness. Leave the criticism of the musical arts to those who where born with true gifted hearing and talents.
I don't understand yet the enthusiasm for Maria. Her 1951 voice does not impress me either.I feel a big sorrow she lasted only 10 or 12 years, I wish she would have had a better technique that would have allowed her to sing even till 38
You mean then moment when she overpowers the chorus, tenor, and orchestra for 8 entire seconds? If that is a scream, well, more people should scream like that.
Yahoowy!! Full throated enormous high E flat held for nearly 8 seconds that only Callas could emit at her prime. I'm sure no one fell asleep at this Aida performance.
Callas was simply the best opera singer of 20 th century, with her flaws together. Who cares if she lost her high e flat in 1955. ALL IN ALL SHE WAS THE BEST SINGER OF PREVIOUS CENTURY, AND MAYA PLISETSKAYA BEST BALERINA OF THE SAME TIME.
Callas was FULL OF FLAWS, WOBBLY high Cs, ugly SCREAMING voice, HORRENDOUS technique that cracked most of the time, let's not mention her MONOTONOUS high notes, unlike sutherland's ringing ones. hmmm let's see what else?
she LOST her e-flat in 1955, she produced bizarre sounds in many coloratura passages (example: the Ah! si in saprgi d'amaro that became hooo! si) and they call her la ¿divina?, and a ¿¿¿dramatic coloratura???.
No she didn't where did you get that? Have you heard her E-flats in her Traviata's between 1955, and 1958? I guess not. Or her stratospheric E-flat in the 1954 and 1955 Lucia's? Or in La Sonnambula? After 1958 she didn't sing roles that required an E-flat. You should get your facts straight. She was the finest soprano until she died. She has not been surpassed in her interpretations.
Actually, she sang lots of good E-flats until 1958. And in her commercial and live Sonnambula (Cologne) in 1957, she not only hits great E-Flats, but does a perfect diminuendo before a two octave descending scale, a feat "unrivaled in the history of the grammophone."
I am a major fan, but by '57 she had lost the power and had started to 'wobble'. All the same, the poignancy, the tone, and the acting, she was a colossus... No other soprano sounded so good he wobbled...
She lost the power with the weight, but still sang some great E-flats, though not with the same ease or gigantic volume she could pour out when she was zaftig. Still though, not even Sutherland did the same diminuendo on the E-flat Callas could do well into '57.
Even though I have listened to this a million times, every time I listen even though I know exactly when the E-flat is coming, Maria still blows me away each time! For 8 seconds there is just an unexplainable feeling that I get.
E-flat!! woooow...just amazing!! haha La Callas was just great!! there's no one like her!!...she is my heroe...and I think that what she did that time /and many others has no comparasion)..please post your commentS!! I just can't stop listening!! jojo

Giuseppe Di Stefano Luciano Pavarotti
Renée Fleming Placido Domingo
Rolando Villazón etc.
rambo2882 3 years ago

Let me absoloutely clear.
El Palacio de Bellas Artes de México is WITHOUT question a second tier house. There are only SIX top tier and SIX in this second tier category. A GREAT honour. Its importance and ranking internationally cannot be disputed.
End of discussion.

It's the singing that matters not the house.

Callas feat is probably the dramatic climax in opera of all times. Maybe not altogether orthodox musically, but vocally and
dramatically flabbergasting andsuperb. This is what opera is all about:music, drama, emotio
salalavil 3 years ago 4

Let one of today's cookie cutter chirpers TRY THAT! Amazing!

Corageous,daring, supreme. That's Callas.
Alce2008 4 years ago 4
That's because youre personlity is dull is why shje doesn't impress you,no one can help the way you where born that's a genetic flaw. Besides she gave her all like a true artist not 50/50 or less like most who try and last for ever. The bad thing about it is regardless of how long and well presrved they think their voices are you can stil hear that they are old especially a soprano they go sour fastr than male voices.

wow it seems Callas is the navel the umbilical cord of the world.Beleive me I wish she would have a voice without so many flaws and distresses being the umbilical cord of the world as she seems for you.

How stupid you sound;listening to this here and reading youre comments one would truly know what's flawed. You sound like a bitter jealous woman.

Her 1951 voice dissapoints me too. When she sang in Mexico she ordered to put a billboard, a cartel with lights in the theater "Maria Meneghini the world greatest prima donna".Poor Maria, she sang at Palacio Bellas Artes in Mexico city...the size of that 3rd rate house is like a shoes box
lohengrinteo 4 years ago
Poor lorengrinteo doesn't realize that Pelacio de bella Artes is Mexico's finest and most famous theatre not theiur third class rate. And don't forget La scala,Teatro Communale,Verona Arena where she sand La Gioconda in 1952 just to name a few of the biggest and the best in Italy where she's renown.

You´re such an ignorant. Obviously you haven´t been at Palacio de Bellas Artes de México and second it isn´t a third rate house. Other wise La Scala wouldn´t go there. It is one of the most important theaters in Latin America. And 1951 was part of her great period.

Palacio de Bella Artes ahahah! it is like to sing in Newark! idiot!

Again... IGNORANT!!!... you´re making of yourself a STUPID IDIOT in front of everyone here. Go ahead!!!
ezayitas 3 years ago
Lohengrinteo, where did you get this absurd idea that Callas could order to put the billboard? The Mexicans were the first to recognise she was (and still is) the greatest primadonna of the century and all times!

It's a moment of opera to remember for Maria's crazy vocally power. But her best legacy is about the interpretation.

Callas cannot be heard in the complete ensemble scene, she had to sing this unmusical and lyrical Lucìa note at the end to be heard, the only moment of the triumphal scene when she is heard. The Eflat is a scream

Her 1951 voice does not impress me either.I feel a big sorrow she lasted only 10 or 12 years, I wish she would have had a better technique that would have allowed her to sing even till 38
lohengrinteo 4 years ago
She DOMINATES the ensemble! Are you DEAF???
goldenthroat86 3 years ago 2
You mean then moment when she overpowers the chorus, tenor, and orchestra for 8 entire seconds? If that is a scream, well, more people should scream like that.
hac2011 3 years ago 6
Yahoowy!! Full throated enormous high E flat held for nearly 8 seconds that only Callas could emit at her prime. I'm sure no one fell asleep at this Aida performance.
sicuro75 4 years ago 2
would have loved to have been in the opera house! she must have blown them away!!!
opera60 4 years ago 2
This woman was a miracle! That E-flat is just BEYOND words!
Elisabetta611 4 years ago
Her voice cuts through the orchestra like a knife! No comparison. Brava!
jjcbss 4 years ago
Callas was simply the best opera singer of 20 th century, with her flaws together. Who cares if she lost her high e flat in 1955. ALL IN ALL SHE WAS THE BEST SINGER OF PREVIOUS CENTURY, AND MAYA PLISETSKAYA BEST BALERINA OF THE SAME TIME.
zdenko1945 4 years ago 4
Correction zdenko: Margo Fonteyn, Ulanova and Spessitseva way ahead of Plissetskaya.

Callas was FULL OF FLAWS, WOBBLY high Cs, ugly SCREAMING voice, HORRENDOUS technique that cracked most of the time, let's not mention her MONOTONOUS high notes, unlike sutherland's ringing ones. hmmm let's see what else?
she LOST her e-flat in 1955, she produced bizarre sounds in many coloratura passages (example: the Ah! si in saprgi d'amaro that became hooo! si) and they call her la ¿divina?, and a ¿¿¿dramatic coloratura???.
monteaventinoo 4 years ago
She probably lost it in 1953. Before that she was the finest soprano in the world. This is probably the most famous note in live opera.
jrwilmott 4 years ago
No she didn't where did you get that? Have you heard her E-flats in her Traviata's between 1955, and 1958? I guess not. Or her stratospheric E-flat in the 1954 and 1955 Lucia's? Or in La Sonnambula? After 1958 she didn't sing roles that required an E-flat. You should get your facts straight. She was the finest soprano until she died. She has not been surpassed in her interpretations.
csmjr91090 4 years ago 10
Tebaldi or Callas, the answer is Nilsson ;-)

De gustibus non disputandum est
tomzoricic 4 years ago
Actually, she sang lots of good E-flats until 1958. And in her commercial and live Sonnambula (Cologne) in 1957, she not only hits great E-Flats, but does a perfect diminuendo before a two octave descending scale, a feat "unrivaled in the history of the grammophone."
Shahrdad 4 years ago 3
I am a major fan, but by '57 she had lost the power and had started to 'wobble'. All the same, the poignancy, the tone, and the acting, she was a colossus... No other soprano sounded so good he wobbled...
jrwilmott 4 years ago
She lost the power with the weight, but still sang some great E-flats, though not with the same ease or gigantic volume she could pour out when she was zaftig. Still though, not even Sutherland did the same diminuendo on the E-flat Callas could do well into '57.
Shahrdad 4 years ago

csmjr91090 4 years ago
Even though I have listened to this a million times, every time I listen even though I know exactly when the E-flat is coming, Maria still blows me away each time! For 8 seconds there is just an unexplainable feeling that I get.
csmjr91090 4 years ago 4
E-flat!! woooow...just amazing!! haha La Callas was just great!! there's no one like her!!...she is my heroe...and I think that what she did that time /and many others has no comparasion)..please post your commentS!! I just can't stop listening!! jojo
