Saruman destroys the shire as 'sharky' like Orcish for 'Old Man' - to get his final last laugh at Frodo, which I guess he does 'more damage than you can undo in your short lives'. Wormtongue does knife him, hobbit archers kill Worm. I like that ending: more of a statement about world war

Yes, Gamling was Rohirrim and one of Theoden's bodyguard. He was an old man trying to make defence at Helmes deep along with Aragorn, but Saruman's army was too strong so he died. Once again Saruman's Uruk-hai rules.
