  • Half of the people in this video are dead lol

  • For every property tax dollar collected in 1977 (the year BEFORE Prop 13 passed), the county this last year (FY 2009-2010) collected $7.20. Verified with SD County Tax Assessor.

During that time frame, our county population has grown about 85%, and inflation has gone up about 260%. Hence property tax revenues today are substantially higher than the bloated PRE-Prop 13 year, even after adjusting for inflation and population growth.

  • In November, 2010, there's a simple majority sales tax measure (Prop D) on the San Diego city ballot. In addition, there's a simple majority car tax increase on the California state ballot (Prop 21). There are dozens of other such measures on the ballot across the state.

Apparently no one thought to fact check this segment with anyone familiar with the topic. Or, worse yet, perhaps this fact was known by the producers, but ignored.

  • A simple majority CA state tax increase (Prop 1A) was tried in May of 2009, and failed to get the simple majority. Indeed, with a 65% NO vote, it almost got 2/3 AGAINST it. But other such measures have passed.

  • This is an astonishingly dishonest, pro-Big Government PBS production. No surprise -- just disappointing.

Most important is the assertion that Prop 13 requires that all state and local tax increases must get a two-thirds majority to pass. That's patently false.

CERTAIN taxes take a 2/3 majority -- namely those taxes passed by the state legislature. But the state AND local governments can pass a general tax increase with a simple voter majority.
