13 years later and I still get the goosebumps from this. Epic stuff. Perfect soundtrack so many changes/variations that makes you imagine. I remember many many years ago I had a 3d project created in my head with all of the story board timed to the 2nd part of the music of Stash. Sadly I was never as productive as TBL.
WIthout doubt one of the best soundtracks ever created for an intro. And indeed quite an achievement when considering the rather poor sequenzing-capabilities. Music had to be created without the sounds, then precalced and played to hear the result, then adjusted a bit, then re-calced and played. Must have taken quite a few hours. Nowadays, VSTs are typically created for the softsynths, making composing a bit more intuitive let alone productive. Still - TBL set the bar high with this one!
Excellent. I think the PC demoscene is pointless and boring in gerneral, this one of the very few demos I've seen that's really impressive. (the other ones are also by TBL)
@drazi79 LOL Out of all the demo/intro classics this one is IMO the most techically superior ever made. There was absolutely NOTHING like the synth in this at the time. By far the best 64k intro of all time!
i'm still wondering how the fuck could someone include such sophisticated soundtrack in a 64k demo... must be some kinda custom synth and/or midi whatever... i wish i knew!!! i've been thinking about it for years and still could not figure it out...

It would be nice to see a vid "the making of stash" by tbl, i'm sure everyone would learn a lot.

what this track??

Too bad the soundtrack is badly captured (why the alternating/weird compression on the audio level?) The track is this intro's best asset.
Hurray for Probe for making this track and for the "mp4" audio algorithms ;-)

Thumbs up, way up!

The synth was, like mvsmsx says, pretty basic.
It generated the sequenses you hear as samples, wich were inserted as in a .xm file.
The sequenses itself were hardcoded. :)

@Daft99 Well, the structure of the synth is pretty basic, but the sound.... poehaa, simply amazing. ;)
And the funny part is, the fatness of the sound somes from some bugs in the osc code, it's the tb303 all over again. ;)

@Daft99 Oh, and of course Probe is just a musical deity. ;)

I remember this from The Gathering 1997 i think it was in Norway and it totally blowed my mind. Remember this is only 64Kb!

TP97.
I remember the stunned audience bursting into cheers when first part was over and then was struck numb in silence when part 2 pounced on us.
Awesome!

But I have also seen this in Normay, maybe it was TG98 they showed it on the big screen.

The synth was reasonable simple, really. And synths like these don't really need to be all that big anyway.

one of the best for me :)
