I'd like to go up there sometime. It's along the way when my husband and I drive up from Omaha to Minnesota to visit friends. I've heard rumors the area is haunted - farmers and people in the area have claimed to hear music and see apparitions of the 3 stars wandering the cornfields
@VirgoGal74 I heard music at one point in the video, while they were standing at the site. It might have just been one of the guys' cell phones. I'd love to see one (or all) of the apparitions. It sounds spooky to talk about, but imagine if you could actually interact with their spirits. You know, talk to them and have them respond intelligently. THAT would be cool!
Did the same walk myself in 2007, even more snow then, really cold. But well worth the pilgramage. Have also been to Lubbock cemetry a few years - everybody I asked in Lubbock had never heard of Buddy1 Ended up in the Sheriff's office where I finally got directions. I hope it's better publicised these days.
I just visited the site today...I love their music and I am only 16 so that proves it that these musicians are timeless and even though they are gone their music still lives on! R.I.P. Buddy, Ritchie, and J.P.!!
I walked this trail to the memorial site last month (Oct. 2010) in 70 degree weather! and it was a HIKE! I cannot imagine walking it in 5 degree weather (-15 Celsius) NEVER! I had to pull my pictures out and the snow on the day this video was shot has to be almost 3-1/2 feet deep as the bottom rim of the glasses come to above my waist. I don't think I can do the hike in 5 degree weather and 3-1/2 ft of snow but it is a site that all should visit. Watched Los Lobos at the Surf Ballroom too!
I was there 6 days after you! It was exactly like you showed, except near the memorial was a blackened crater where a bonfire was on the 3rd. Was driving from Seattle to DC, had to make the detour and visit. Everyone should do this once in their lives, you will be enriched from the experience. Seriously, y'all gotta do this. Glad you got to do this, wish we could've met!
In feb I am going to Iowa to trudge through another winters snow. ( a "bucket wish" i geuss) My hat is off to two guys how love thier idols as muchg as I do
I Was told as long as you keep to the fence it was OK ,When crops are growing you would automatically do this .
On the day we walked to the site the snow was a good 2 foot deep it had snowed
about 5in the night before [try to find a summer view of the glasses marker] and you will see what i mean Its a lovely tall corn field in the summer . Thanks
@silvereagle2061 They're definitely cool with it, as long as you don't muck up the grounds or the corn. Actually, it's owned by a company which also owns The Surf Ballroom. I found this out after calling Mrs. Juhl, the former resident, and asking permission beforehand, and she explained this. She is a very sweet woman, was a pleasure to talk with her.
I was born in Argentina in 1975, I did not know these musicians, I only listened about their names and of some songs interpreted by other artists, but what meant it is that it is exciting to see that they happened more than 50 years and still these boys still are remembered and respected, if had known they it would be very proud, I am in favor of trying to conserve the past, this is exciting, congratulations!!
I see that probably a few people use to do this trail and its a shame that this sacred ground do not show any decent mark for people to remember this great musician
@cbimbi This video was shot in the middle of winter and the snow has covered the trail. There IS a monument out in the middle of this field and a steel pair of black rim glasses showing the start of the path. To say "its a shame that this sacred ground do not show any decent mark for people to remember " is completely inaccurate. The town cherishes these artists and literally everyday there is someone walking the 1/2 mile path to the monument. Don't make statements you know nothing about.
All I can say is when you stand there you realize you aew on sacred ground. Only way I know to describe the feeling, Think about his impact. Right now, this very minute some bunch of kids are playing in a band and 50 years later "Not Fade Away" blares from their amps. Somewhere in the world right now his music is being played by people whose parent were unborn at the time of his death.
This gives you a better perspective of how far the crash site is from the road. And how solumnly quiet/cold it must have been when the authorities first drove up on the scene.
Thank you guys for going through the trouble to video this.
Just by the sound of the footsteps in the snow, I know it was pretty cold. The scene look just like it did 50 years ago. Of course, being a snow covered feild helps, but it must have been like being in a time warp. Thanks for posting.
I didn't go to the crash site this year because of the extreme cold - but I really regret not going. Tony, is that the first time you'd been to the site? The first time I went there it was very cold also; I remember I had on 3 layers of clothing! I also remember that I cried a little bit. Thanks for posting!
It touches my heart to see devoted fans still doing things like this. Here it is..50 years later, and people still care. That is a testament to the impact of Buddy's music...not only that, but that fans would come from all over the world to pay tribute...
Wow, just watching that made me feel cold..and it's July right now!
@silvereagle2061 he's cool with it. It's a history.
