  • we did this version in english class and mt teacher kept on fast forwarding some of the scenes so i didnt get to see the whole movie :(

  • This is my favorite version of all of them, and I've seen a few!

  • dereck jacobi best

  • [...in English. That should have said, "Cyrano in English." There goes the whole point, yeesh.]

  • @uptoolate1896 That's what the actors names were for. I doubt Kelvin Kline is famous in other countries as well as speaking their language. :)

  • Affreuse performance de Gardner

  • I'm usually a fan of all these people in their other work....just not this....

  • Of all the actresses to put against an actor like Kevin Kline...Garner is truly dreadful..which is probably why Kline has won a Best Supporting Oscar and two Tony Awards...she couldn't win a goldfish at a fair...

  • Ah ah entièrement d'accord avec toi (:

D'ailleurs pourquoi le faire en anglais ? Ça massacre toute la poésie de Rostand...

  • @EthyliquementVotre Aww, give us a chance, you folks can read a newspaper and make it sound like a love poem! We try!

For what it's worth, though, I speak one language as a native and a second darn near native, and Cyrano is one of the most beautiful things I've discovered. I am partial to Brian Hooker's translation, though.

  • @uptoolate1896 Ah ah I'm sorry but I was just saying what I think :) Honestly the acting is not great...

And it doesn't matter, we french people "have a good language" and you have great tv shows we can't even look now :(

  • Je trouve que Jennifer Gardber jout très mal le personnage de Roxanne, même si je comprend rien elle est trop gestuelle et cabotine

  • Jennifer Garner is awful! She didn't find her voice for the character at all.

  • bad, very bad, ridiculus in english

  • I actually cried the first time I saw this scene. Its beautiful.

  • I LOVE this show... anyone know where I can find the whole thing? And I mean, with Kevin Kline. Not any other, it's not as good!!

  • @notablegoat This was originally done by Christopher Plummer on Broadway... he was spectacular.. got a Tony award for it... and it is available on CD (I got mine thru Amazon) Kevin Kline is good... but listen to Plummer... you will be impressed.

  • @iamsayda I'll look into it! But Kline holds a special place in my heart, because he's the first I saw...

  • @notablegoat Ive been looking. but Amazon seems to be it... So under appreciated by others... It is depressing.

  • kline is terrifically understated in this, so much less boldness than the classic Ferrer portrayal--yet it works brilliantly for Kline. So effortess. Garner's trying but she's forcing it. Not a good role for her at all.

  • I love this play.

  • I could watch Kevin Kline speak all day long.

  • Can't say I like Garner's performance. She doesn't seem to have really become the character. She is saying the words, but she seems to be too conscious of the fact that she is acting.

Kline, however, is pure genius :)

  • omg I remeber watching this on PBS, it is awesome! i wanna buy it it's so sad :( :( :( :( but frikkin awesome. Great acting. dudes that's not overacting it's called BROADWAY, their supposed to be DRAMATIC

  • Kevin Kline is an amazing Cyrano! I love the dialogue that Cyrano speaks to Roxanne. This play is AMAZING!

  • At first I cringed at Garner's performance, but it has grown on me. I think she did well. :) It IS a stage performance. Kevin Kline, however, just enraptured me in his performance. Very well played. I will think of Cyrano only as Kevin Kline. :D

  • @WarriorQueen2 Kevin Kline's performance had me crying twice. However, Gérard Depardieu's performance is incomparable.

  • @myguiltypleasures1 Really? I'll definitely have to watch his rendition, some time. Thanks :)

  • It's not that she's overacting, it's that she's acting badly. Her tone, her expressions, everything seems wrong for the scene. Yes, Roxane is overly dramatic, but in this scene she is supposed to be somewhat captivated by Cyrano's words.

  • shame this dvd not available in italy

  • Anyone who slates garner for over-acting here doesn't know Cyrano. Roxanne is famously dramatic.

  • I know the play, I love the play, I'm French. And I think Jennifer Garner acts terribly here.

And BTW, Depardieu is no reference. He totally missed how light and subtle the character is, which he, as an actor and as Cyrano, is not.

Although I don't know much of the full theatre literature, I think Cyrano is one of the most difficult parts to play.

  • @beritheatre Agreed ... I think it is a difficult part to play. I think Kevin Kline would be better if he didn't try to rush through the lines so much. Put some passion into it! And I also agree about Jennifer as Roxane ... dislike.

And I would *love* to see many, many more actors performing Cyrano in its original French! I've looked to see videos of more ... but so far, no success. :-/ That makes me sad. heh.

  • I love the play, I finished reading in school the other day! :D The actors are great.

  • Why is Jennifer Garner not blond? The script specifically refers to Roxanne being blond. She couldn't wear a wig?

    And she's horrible!

  • Watch Derek Jacobi or Gérard Depardieu perform this scene -- then you will see how it is supposed to be done. ;-)

  • I just got to watch this last night and it was amazing. I cried at the end, it was extremely well done!

  • Have you people never read the play?? She isn't overacting, it's the character!!!

  • @Ryxak So true! In the play she's scripted as such a drama queen.

  • Most of the show is comedy, and the way she overacts is funny.

  • God... Jennifer Garner is LAME!!!

  • I know. She's overacting through the whole thing. Thankfully that doesn't take away from teh beauty of the show, and kevin Kline is amazing!

  • She's overacting because she's on a live stage, and one has to overact to get the point across to the audience

  • A GOOD actress doesn't have to overact in order to make up for her shortcomings. Her being cast for this role was a gross mistake, and a waste of Kline's talent.

  • @bbbernardo Anyone who has been on a live stage professionally can tell you that Overacting is necessary to show the audience what is happening. Every actor, good and bad, has to do it. The only thing that determines whether or not you are good is how naturally you can do it. I believe Kline did it very naturally, and is an amazing actor

  • where can we find it to see it all?

  • this is sutch a beautyful story it is sade thow
