I've seen my share of combat and then some as a sniper qualified Army Ranger & one thing I can say for sure........everything from a .22lr to the 50 BMG is easily capable of killing effectively and it doesn't matter what a man or animal is killed with, dead is dead. It doesn't matter whether it came from a musket, AK, BB gun or a Naval deck gun, it all ends the same......lights out .....game over. What is more important than the weapon or cartridge is the man behind the weapon.
There seem to be quite a few here that know everything about nothing, with a few mixed in that really do seem to know something. Let me help clear some of this up....an AK is not a piece of junk, it is one of the most durable and reliable weapons in the world. A 50 BMG with FMJ or AP rounds will not expand on a human and will pass through, it'll leave a massive wound channel but it will almost never tear a human in half.
My friend who was a marine scout sniper in Iraq said what happens when you shoot a person with a .50BMG. He said it's hard to recognize that what you hit WAS a person. I tend to believe him over keyboard commandos as he has actually been there.
@lucastimmer wow.. you're f'king ignorant lol. Have you ever seen a person shot with a barrett .50 cal? I can tell by your comment that you haven't... "glide through the human body without transferring much energy inside the body" Dude.. you are INCREDIBLY f'king retarded.
@paedrarmy1 I's like to think a .50 (or 338lm) would be more 'humane', more of the time. I'm sure the huge temporary cavity with the .50 gives a HUGE margin of error vs a .308.
I like it when bucks go down right there, not after sprinting 100yds. (I deer hunt with a slug gun fyi)
i wouldn't trust anyone on this whole message bored with even a bb gun if you don't know from personal experience what you talking about than you have no right to argue so strongly i'v never killed a man with a musket or a .50 so i don't argue i read and learn witch is what every one on the bored should do
@lucastimmer no, but okay, of course a musket ball is flatter lol and yes it can put a whole through someone at 20 yards, but stop tryin to spit shit outa ur ass all you musketball nutthuggers get over your self, 50 call of duty bs excuse, take in account type of ammunition for 50 as well as angle of target when hit as well as distance, a 50 fmj will not just glide through a human body you obviously have no expiernce what so ever with firearms in combat
@lucastimmer apparently the exit wound from a .50 round (FMJ) is about the size of a dinner plate. Fuck knows what an armour piercing or incendiary .50 round would do...
@thetubewithin Are you serious? Where did you see that? A movie? A .50 cal FMJ zips right through the human body 95% of the time and AP will do the exact same thing.
@RIA1911a1 note that I said exit wound, as the entry will obviously be a lot smaller. Have you ever read a book called Sniper One by SGT Dan Mills? It's his account of the Siege of CIMIC House in Al Amarah, Iraq. He describes the results of shooting insurgents with a Barrett in this book. I also said 'apparently' in my comment, so it may not be true, but it seems fairly believable to me considering 7.62mm rounds take chunks away from the flesh.
Hey, you might think it's overkill, but I'd rather be knocked out with a .50 than wounded with a .22-250. Generally speaking, the less the deer runs, the more humane the shot was, and this one wasn't moving forward one damn inch.
This video is of a guy taking a deer with his 50 BMG rifle. Although it is overkill in a big way, it is no different than those that take prairie dogs with a 22-250 rifle. This video is to demonstrate the shear power of the 50 BMG cartridge, and although the off side shoulder was damaged beyond use, the backstrap, hams, and shot side sholder we usable.
@rbthntr64 I've seen the power of .50cal via human headshots. It's more impressive than watching the blurry video. Not saying it's your fault, but your phone has a shitty camera ;)
Not sure how hunting with a .50 makes you less of a man (or woman, as the case may be). Unless you're out there with a bow and arrow where the deer can pay you back....
Ever think maybe they just wanted meat? Not everyone hunts for antlers on their wall to show all their friends how manly they are. Sounds like you have an inferiority complex.
If he just wanted meat, he would have shot it with a round appropriate for a deer sized animal. By his own admission, he wasted and entire shoulder. He was demonstrating the devastation of a .50 BMG. Something that has already been demonstrated on countless videos. I would reconsider eating any of the shot side shoulder too. Talk about major lead contamination. I've never shot a deer with anything bigger than a 270. I've never had a deer move more than ten yards from the shot.
@pyrewyrm With much, much, much lower velocity. A .50 cal ball round out of a smooth bore musket doesn't even compare to the energy in a modern .50 BMG round, or even most common .30 cal rifle rounds.
Energy isn't everything, especially when much of it carries through in the bullet out the otherside of the target. In addition, soft lead deforms far better than jacketed FMJ, yielding far more destructive wounds than their muzzle velocity would suggest.
As I stated above, muzzle velocity is only one small part of the equation. Military historians credit the soft lead mini ball as the most horrific wounding ammo in history. Its a claim I've yet to read disputed. (John Keegan 'Mask of Command')
Your muzzle velocity guesses are also incorrect, AmericanHeritage cites rifles averaging 1600 fps and extra powder loads for long shots boosting mv to 2500 fps...
Actualy my friend, that is incorrect. I work for a company that makes custom muzzleloaders long rifles and flintlocks as well as being in the marines i can tell you recieve most of your info from books or online sources, i can tell you a musket ball punches a hole through its victims to the damage you are talking about its at 100 yards. And princeaferds correct with muzzlevelocity im not sure what your even talking about with that. He is talking bout50 cal sniper muzzle velocity
You could learn alot from books.. and alittle lesson in history. Look up the concept of "proofing". Likewise, books, whatever you may sneer at for, contain facts which can be verified. Which is not something I can say for any of your claims. Otherwise, I could simply cite my own experience and claim the high ground as well. As it stands, I base my statements on established fact. The fact is muzzleloaders were often given double or triple powder loads for range.
You also need to understand is that if you get shot with a 50 cal sniper at 100 yards of course the bullet will go through and yes it doesnt do the punch action as a musket ball, it does worse damage. The force and kinetic energy of a 50.bmg at 100 yards would either cut you into 2 or blow a whole 3 feet wide in you,
as much as you may want to believe a musket will do more damage, its just not true,
@hellofriend247 I own a black power rifle(.50), and a .55 anti tank rifle. If one was to be hit by a 805grain, .55 round, travelling at 2980fps (sim to .50bmg), square in the body,it would tear a gaping hole from hip to hip and leave two seperate portions of body.. Kinetic energy involes pressure waves, and that in conjunction with the weight and spin is enough to pulverise any thing that breaths.. A ball wouldnt have the co efficiency to perform as well. or put up with 3000fps. i agree with u
Someone has been watching too much hollywood and spending too little time at the range. I never implied the .50 BMG round was anything less than effective. But your gross exaggeration of its effects and down play of muzzle loader only reveals a lack of basic knowledge in terminal ballistics. Just because a target is not torn in half does not mean the insides are not reduced to a terrible mess resembling more of a grenade than a bullet. But your back yard tactical experience is supreme right?
@hellofriend247 the average man is 20" wide at the chest... a hole 3 feet wide? Someone has been watching rambo too much and not enough military channel.
@hellofriend247 False on the hole. The fact that you cant even spell hole says it all. It completely depends on material the round has to pass through the the density of that material. For instance a ball round (FMJ) will just go right through and the exit will be roughly the same as the entrance. Although if you use a hollow point or partial metal jacket with lead core it will cause a LOT more damage. This stuff is pretty much the same regardless of caliber.
Heh, I'd rather have a good .30 cal with a 180 grain soft point, people hear .50 BMG and they think that its better than everything, unless he made his own bullets, that was a FMJ, not too efficient at killing.....
@TacticalSuperRebel I totally agree! On every damn video theres something about "Why not a .50 cal?!" Because of CoD. God I love CoD as a game but people who dont know shit piss me off.
