  • He may not be rich, he may not be handsome, but a true gentleman always has his smile, and the Tramp always had his

  • What a deep and thought provoking plot!

  • Why can't I meet a tramp like that?

  • @organicjuice well if you call women like that i doubt you will :P

  • @XbleedingXmascaraXD

I meant Chaplin. I am a woman, lol.

  • @organicjuice ohhhhh lol ikr? XD be more specific XD haha

  • @Alkmini80 lol.. ik XD

  • Chaplin was a true polymath, and definitely as competent a composer as he was an actor and director. Krautrock fans, check out Holger Czukay's "Ode to Perfume" for a funkier version of this melody. It might just be an accidental coincidence like George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" which was ripped off of the Chiffon's "He's So Fine." Not sure.

  • Great, movie, great actor! You will be in our heart for ever.

I'ts a pity that, now, a lot of people don't understand the beauty of this movie!

  • oh, boHoooo...."poignant" is so the word!

  • most poignant ending ever

  • Kyle sent me!

  • Do you ever hear charley Chaplin singing the song? I have only seen my love (MJ) sing it witch I'm ok with but I just wanna know if charley sang it for real. But I am mj's #1 fan

  • @cutiepie101779 No there's not, Chaplin composed the music, while John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons added the lyrics and title in 1954 for Nat King Cole :)

  • @VynilFetishDJ but after i put this cmment i seen a vid with charley chaplin singing

  • @cutiepie101779 well, if that really happened, was after Nat King Cole, he made the first singed version, anyway you should send me the link, i like the song ^^

  • @VynilFetishDJ k well on the vid it said charley chaplin singing but im not sure. i will try to find the vid and when i do i will send it to you

  • @assunta 423 right man ;)

  • A true genius.

  • i just smiled now ^^

  • SMILE. Compuesta y dirigida por Charles Chaplin en 1936.

  • I like it.It is funny.

  • 36 people dont know how to smile and fight in bad situations...

  • Written by Chaplin. Was there anything that Chaplin couldn`t do?

  • @mebizzarobrian My good man, I don't believe there was.

  • @mebizzarobrian He also composed the music for a lot of the pieces.

  • @mebizzarobrian sadly he couldn't be around for ever... but other than that.. No

  • Beauty.

  • If Vivien Leigh didn't get the part, she would have been a great Scarlett!

  • Why can't cinema be like this anymore D: ? SO AMAZING!

  • There are no words to describe the feeling of joy and hope that this melody expresses.

  • 36 people didn't tried again.

  • tears and smiles tha's all in life

  • IL PIù GRANDE ARTISTA DEL SECOLO SCORSO.

  • she is beautiful :)

  • @knight0Farabia07 She is Paulette Goddard, Charlie's third wife....

  • Aww, what a beautiful song. Thank You Michael Jackson for introducing me to this <3

  • so sweet..

  • Can somebody explain me that we have HD, perfect colour and sound but the present films are much worse than in Charlie Chaplin's age?

  • @Havlos1990

90% of today's movies are shitty remakes, shitty sequels or movies based on shitty books.

  • @Havlos1990 Certainly. While technology has advanced, taste, art, craft, imagination, understanding of and faith in good acting and writing have declined.

  • @Havlos1990 We have too much and we should share. That's my best answer right now.

  • @Havlos1990 Lack of substance, that's clearly the case with so much modern rubbish.

  • another genius shunned by the public

  • On my comments page, not here but on my site, I said, he only wrote the music. On my comments page there was lot's of info on Charle Chaplin for a week. How he got blacklisted etc. I played the video of him receiveing his honorary Oscar as my featured video. I also had part 1 and the ending of City Lights. That's all gone now, and I am featuring something else. So, before you say anything on this comments page about what I said go to my site. I shouldn't have used the word song, but music.

  • This whole thing makes me smile :)

  • everybody who likes this watch '' The Old Mill''....a silly symphony cartoon.

  • paulette's heading for the hollywood hills in quest of being scarlett o'hara!

  • He wrote the song "Smile"

  • @Rtmax45 Actually he wrote the MUSIC to Smile in 1936. John Turner and Geoffrey Parson wrote the lyrics to go along with it in 1954.

  • He is with Paulette Goddard in this scene, who he lived with for 10 years. They had a common law marriage. They split up, but it was an amicable separeation

  • Goosebumps all over the place

  • I dont know why every time i watch the ending of any Chaplins movie i have this stupid smile in my face :)

  • Truly one the great artist / actors of our country.

  • @1:19....awesome lol so cute

  • BEAUTIFUL..

  • FABULOUS - From Egypt with Love :D

  • OK OK I'LL SAY IT........ the girl is hot :)

  • movie like this will never came again, my respect for chaplin

  • There is an obvious difference between Charlie Chaplin and Hitler. Maybe you should keep your obnoxious comments to yourself and let everyone else enjoy this. Just sayin.

I love Charlie Chaplin c: one of the best actors who ever lived! :3

  • when was hitler in a movie?

  • @MikEhaWk6009 LOL

  • @MikEhaWk6009 right after he fucked your mum.

  • Eu adoro Charlie Chaplin !!

  • The best final shot in movie history.

  • The final shot @1:25 is considered Chaplin's most poignant.

It's also the final shot of the silent film era.

  • @leafyutube It's not the final shot of the silent film era. The silent film era ended in 1929. This was a silent film made during the sound era. If you look at it your way, the final shot of the silent film era was "The Artist" from 2011. Silent films are still being made. The medium was never completely abandoned.

  • @shanecincy

Let's put it this way. It was the final shot of the transition period. Still, we say final shot the "silent era" in the interest of brevity. It that clear now?

  • @leafyutube Different ways of looking at it I suppose. In my opinion, 1936 was after the "transition period" was long over. By 1930, 99% of all films made in Hollywood were talkies, so the transition period is more like from 1927 when "The Jazz Singer" came out up until 1930. Chaplin was unique in that he was making silents films this late, and many said the film would fail because of that. Boy did he show them wrong!

  • "Smile though your hart is aching" - michael jackson & charlie chaplin RIP - the world will never be the same

  • Please don't compare that freak, little-boy-molester to Chaplin!

  • Please don't compare that freak, little-boy-molester to Chaplin!

  • @toffeemomma MJ deeply Admired Chaplin and like it or not he-s the most talented and succesful artist in last 50 years. He was found innocent.Let the man rest in Peace.Mj sang Smile brilliantly,be positive and just Smile! instead of judge a man that is not here anymore and went throu something Iwish you never go thru. Face the whole world thinking you are a child molester being a lie.Nobody has stopped to think how much MJ suffered but his fans

  • @toffeemomma how dare you say that

  • @rk tqmffptb He was a sick, wealthy backstabber! He betrayed his friends (Just ask Sir. Paul!), and payed off people to get away with his inappropriate behaviour with little boys! As far as I know, Chaplin never behaved in such a sleazy way! His friends could trust him, and he never payed off the parents of little boys for their silence! Any grown male who admits to sharing a bed with a little boy who is not his own child is up to no good!

  • @toffeemomma It was business, and there was no inappropriate behavior. That was proven in the trials. There are many doubts to think if he did a terrible thing, anyway he was a great artist that you can't ever put down

  • @rktqmffptb Ohhh so THAT is what you call an appropriate behaviour, calling someone that bad an artist...that's why creativity is dying, their owners are as good as dead aswell...jeez and they say I'm crazy

  • @catiaktita what r you talkin' about, you just hate him you don't care about the truth that's all

  • @rktqmffptb ARE YOU SERIOUS??? what are you a skinhead? well you might as well disappear then, nobody wants you here...oh excuse me, here as "on earth"! the truth... like you know the truth you are nothing more than a maggot and so much more than just an idiot! fucktard!

  • @catiaktita I don't know the truth but also you don't. so stop speaking ill of him

  • this is quite possibly one of the greatest and most beautiful scenes in movie history. more people my age need to see this and appreciate truely incredible and (emotionally not literally :P) moving ART such as this masterpiece.

  • It's so sad that today there isn't too many people who can see the beauty of this...

  • SMILE 4 EVER EVERYONE CHARLIE IS THE ONE WHO MADE US SMILE BACK IN HIS TIMES.

  • that is so sweet :D cutest thing I've seen in a while :D

  • Chiiilllllls every time I watch this.

  • this scene made me cry...Charlie ever fails to do that - make me laugh and cry at the same time. He's always been so good at pulling heartstrings.

  • best walk evah, i freaking love him xD

  • I love this film. The actress is so adorable.

  • why is it silent i thought in 1936 they had sound..i love this song

  • @normandyangel

Yes but Chaplin was very much opposed to sound in film. In his own films he felt that if the tramp spoke the magic would disappear.

  • Happy Birthday to the Greatest!!

  • Happy Birthday, Genius!

  • this is the best video on youtube

  • Who performs this version???

  • i cryed in this clip

  • Where can I find the original "smile" with the actual VOICES?? Or did it not have vocal singing?

  • @crazy4corbinbleux The original score was instrumental, no voices.

  • @eleonora1782 Wait.. so then how did Michael Jackson know what to say in the lyrics?? If the original was just instrumental? I'm so confused..

  • @crazy4corbinbleux Well Michael Jackson wasn't the first to sing it... A lot of people in the 40s and 50s did, including Nat King Cole. I think they turned it into a pop song in the 30s, so someone else added the words then. But all of the music you hear in Chaplin's films was written by him, as a movie score.

  • @eleonora1782 Really? Ohh, I thought it was only Charlie Chaplin who sang it, and then MJ took his version and made his own thats on the HIStory Album. Others covered it before? Interestingg. Thx !

  • @crazy4corbinbleux Ur welcome ! =) Learn something new everyday!

  • @crazy4corbinbleux the lyrics were added in 1954 by John Turner & Geoffrey Parsons, & Nat King Cole also released the original vocal version of " Smile " also in 1954. That's where MJ, & a host of others who covered this amazing song, got the lyrics. Even more amazing that the music & the lyrics were written 18 years apart, but they fit so perfectly, you would swear they were written together!

  • Actually, there will be 4, you can add Jesus and Elvis

  • @botsbotoi Jesus was a bit before the 20th century. And Elvis.... Great pop artist, but not on the level Chaplin performed. Chaplin added something culturally. Elvis was the first pop artist, but we shouldn't overrate the importance of that when talking about the likes of Chaplin.

  • Neither City Lights nor Modern Times are silent films. They both had brilliant musical scores and use of sound effects; in addition, there are scenes in Modern Times in which speech is mediated through electronic devices--part of that film's satire of the industrial age.

  • @kamilla1960 they indeed did, Chaplin of course didn't apply spoken language to leave the opportunity to convey his messages without needing language as a Catalyst for his emotional portrayal. all of Chaplin's work is one of a kind. as well as Timeless :)

  • what is jackson have to do with all this????

  • @zelgraymon Cause he was one of the " Many " & more " famous " artist who has covered this brilliant song over the past 60 years..............................like him or not, he's still MJ, there'll never be another entertainer like him, as there'll never be another Chaplin!

  • @jasont0815 I see. Thanks for explanation!

  • an original showman to be sure...thanx

  • Well, raise my blood pressure--75 years of Modern Times, 75 years since Charles Spencer Chaplin composed 'Smile'.

Time can never, but never, and I mean, never erase such a legacy.

If you agree, raise your hand.

  • Not a silent film, neither is City Lights. Both are sound films with inventive use of music and sound.

  • @50Violetta absolutely !!!!!!

  • so smile

  • this song makes me sad

  • GLEE

  • He's a genius!

  • Always amorsss !

  • Chaplin experimented with another ending, where the Gamin had become a nun, and he visited her in her convent before walking off alone. Thank goodness his artistic sense prevailed, and he opted for this poetic, simple ending.

  • 1:50

    It's Lawrence of Arabia!

  • siempre te amaré chaplin

gracias por todo lo que nos enseñas!!

  • amazing

  • I love how even though talkies were invented by the time this movie was produced, he still never wanted the Tramp to speak. It shows how much he cares about the character and how he knows the value of him.

  • this movie and song always brings a tear to my one good eye.

  • Charlot, as we call him in France, was, still is, and will always be the greatest artist of all time. In 1000 years from now, only two names will be remembered from the 20th century : Albert Einstein and Charlie Chaplin.

  • @SkaramandraX And Freddie Mercury!

  • @SkaramandraX AGREED and SO TRUE! Funny thing .. he was always so protective of his image & just about a year before he passed .. he started lending his image to any worthy cause that ask. When 'he' was asked why the genorosity all of a sudden .. he replied - I am fastly aging and know my time is near .. I do not want to be forgotten!

You will NEVER be forgotten Charlie!!
