i love this song charlie chaplin will live on forever his films captured the worker against what we call the 1%....tears always come to my eyes when i hear his song i hope this is the last song i hear
Can someone please explain to me the significance of this scene with him telling her to smile and then them walking off into the mountains? I mean I get that it's a nice scene, but everyone is saying this it is extremely profound and poignant, which I just am not understanding why it would be haha.
Chaplin was a true polymath, and definitely as competent a composer as he was an actor and director. Krautrock fans, check out Holger Czukay's "Ode to Perfume" for a funkier version of this melody. It might just be an accidental coincidence like George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" which was ripped off of the Chiffon's "He's So Fine." Not sure.

@cutiepie101779 No there's not, Chaplin composed the music, while John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons added the lyrics and title in 1954 for Nat King Cole :)
@cutiepie101779 well, if that really happened, was after Nat King Cole, he made the first singed version, anyway you should send me the link, i like the song ^^
@Havlos1990 Certainly. While technology has advanced, taste, art, craft, imagination, understanding of and faith in good acting and writing have declined.

@leafyutube Different ways of looking at it I suppose. In my opinion, 1936 was after the "transition period" was long over. By 1930, 99% of all films made in Hollywood were talkies, so the transition period is more like from 1927 when "The Jazz Singer" came out up until 1930. Chaplin was unique in that he was making silents films this late, and many said the film would fail because of that. Boy did he show them wrong!

@crazy4corbinbleux Well Michael Jackson wasn't the first to sing it... A lot of people in the 40s and 50s did, including Nat King Cole. Neither City Lights nor Modern Times are silent films. They both had brilliant musical scores and use of sound effects; in addition, there are scenes in Modern Times in which speech is mediated through electronic devices--part of that film's satire of the industrial age.
@kamilla1960 they indeed did, Chaplin of course didn't apply spoken language to leave the opportunity to convey his messages without needing language as a Catalyst for his emotional portrayal. all of Chaplin's work is one of a kind. as well as Timeless :)
@zelgraymon Cause he was one of the " Many " & more " famous " artist who has covered this brilliant song over the past 60 years..............................like him or not, he's still MJ, there'll never be another entertainer like him, as there'll never be another Chaplin!
Chaplin experimented with another ending, where the Gamin had become a nun, and he visited her in her convent before walking off alone. Thank goodness his artistic sense prevailed, and he opted for this poetic, simple ending.
I love how even though talkies were invented by the time this movie was produced, he still never wanted the Tramp to speak. It shows how much he cares about the character and how he knows the value of him.
Greetings from Texas. Love Charlie Chaplin. Im Tory from Austin Texas singer songwriter musician actress. Check out my original song the The Little Tramp, my tribute to Charles Spencer Chaplin, performed in Houston at Fitzgeralds. ..TTT
Charlot, as we call him in France, was, still is, and will always be the greatest artist of all time. In 1000 years from now, only two names will be remembered from the 20th century : Albert Einstein and Charlie Chaplin.
@SkaramandraX AGREED and SO TRUE! Funny thing .. he was always so protective of his image & just about a year before he passed .. he started lending his image to any worthy cause that ask. When 'he' was asked why the genorosity all of a sudden .. he replied - I am fastly aging and know my time is near .. I do not want to be forgotten!
Brilliant man, he was.

You will NEVER be forgotten Charlie!!
