I bought Gate of Thunder on the Wii a long time ago, but never seem to get past the first stage even, kind of gave up on it. Got Lords of Thunder today, it is far easier to survive for a while it seems, maybe because the weapons are more powerful? Specially when I bought the "3 power bar" upgrade in the shop at the start.
@RobboGLDBZ Oh my.......see, I tend to learn toward GOT. But, I think most people I know would say LOT. Honestly it's tough to choose (of course, GOT comes with three other games, hee hee). :)
Call the FBI!!! the 1 dislike is obviously from someone who did this against his will!. Seriously though, excelent review of an excelent game once again. fredom of choice is one of the game's strong point proving that the designer did this with the gamer in mind, not inflating his ego. Even if the game borrows heavily on Forgotten Worlds it's still a must play on whatever platform you choose. And thumbs up Chris for calling Gate of Thunder 'Gate'. 99.97% of people call it 'Gates'...
Hey Chris, I came here from Gamester81's channel, seen you in about four of his vids. Anyway, I subscribed, i'll be back for more Turbo and now pinball vids. I like how you talk about your history with the game as much as technical stuff about its production. I like to hear this stuff.
@GizmoFan1 Yup, it sure is. That version came later.....and ironically, many people have said that the Turbo version "betters" it. Honestly, I have never played this particular variation. You know?
@spida1a The Sega CD version, while stil the same basic games, is largely inferior to the TurboDuo version. The graphics and colors are duller, the difficulty is lowered, and the music is remade with more synth and an odd "live" sound to it. In general, if the TurboDuo version gets a 4.5/5, The Sega CD probably only would've gotten a 3.5/5. It's still good, but not AS good as the original.
@glovestrong48 That is what I have heard also. I remember when I picked up my Sega CD....I noticed LOT on there. But, I read that it was inferior so, I stuck with my Duo version. Ha ha. :)
@glovestrong48: I have both versions. Other than the sound track, they are virtually identical. Most people who say the Sega CD version is inferior (like you) have never played it on a real system. However, the Duo had MANY games like Lords, while the Mega CD, basically had about 20 good games and a bunch of FMV crap.
@majesticlizard Heh, admittedly so, the Sega CD really didn't have too much to justify the pruchase. Just as well, you are correct, I have not played Lords on a Sega CD, my info comes from a few websites that claim the differences(all stylistic really) and video comparison between the Turbo and CD versions.
I would say there's no really big differences to them other than graphics and sound, so I'll agree :)
@glovestrong48: Actually, believe it or not the graphics were almost identical. I'll upload a video in a bit to prove it if I have time. You would think with the Sega CD's 64 colors it would look a lot worse, but it uses ALL of those colors.
@glovestrong48: I just uploaded it. The first half is the Mega CD version, the second half of the video is the Duo version. They look nearly identical.
This is easily the best shump on the PCE, I would go as far as saying it's one of the finest ones ever created. There's nothing like this game, good review.
@brunoafh123 I can't say it's the best shooter for the PCE, as I have definitely not played all of the Japanese games. However, for the TurboGrafx, it definitely ranks up there easily! You know? Thanks for watching!
@spida1a Look into Hellfire S. Opinions are usually polarized and the Genesis port has more enjoyable music, but it's worth looking into. It's also hard as hell. I'm talking hardest of the hard, hard.
@spida1a I have it on save state and I have 2 or three stages to go. I have alot of emulators on the psp. like nes, snes, genesis, n64, colecovision, vectrex and atari. Also got turbo graphix 16.
Chris is right! You MUST get and play this game! If you are a metal head, the track will rock your socks off! The graphics are superb (bubbles under water actually jiggle realistically, enemies fly out of the background without choppy animation), larger enemies utter bass roars of agony when defeated.
This game will make you picture yourself as the main character.
It's very similar to Forgotten Worlds but, better in some ways.
waiting for your pc engine import review. : P hopefully it's a shooter. BTW...speaking of imports. I think this game is the best for a US release, otherwise Spriggan gets the honors for a best pce shooter.
Great game, I still remember buying it at Babbage's. I wish I could walk into a Gamestop today and walk out with a grip of new and sealed Turbo Grafx games.
Picked this up along with Gate of Thunder on the Wii VC yesterday after seeing your vid. I love shooters and cannot believe I haven't tried this before.
I'm listening to the soundtrack of this game right now and man it's bloody awesome indeed! *headbangs and plays air guitar* lol. Oh, and great review! :D
I bought a TurboDuo just so I could experience this game. Twelve years later I still have both along with many other Duo games. Great review Chris (as always) and keep them coming!
I still have this game ! I haven't played it in years. But I did defeat this game back in the day ! Great review as always Chris ! Keep em' coming ! Can't wait for your review on BEYOND SHADOWGATE !!!! Take care man !
A lot better than the sega cd version which was a really lazy port. Better difficulty (the sega cd version is WAY too easy), better sound effects, enemies don't flash in the sega cd version, your character gets paralyzed when hit in the sega cd version, and it has more colors of course. Also the music was switched around in some stages, bosque in particular...
They could have made MUCH better use of the more powerful sega cd hardware.
i love the graphics in this game, and the variety which is a must in shooters. in the old days, we all had one type of spaceship in games like defender. then came gradius with variety and now this.
Such a great game that chalk full of eye candy. This is definitely on my shortlist of games to clear in the near future. Your video is just what I needed to move beyond the Gates and face the Lords. hehe
So I take it of the series you'd go with Gates, then Lords? I've been wanting to pick them up on the Virtual Console but I didn't know which one to pick first.
I absolutely love this game!! I picked it up last year at the same time I got a PC Engine Duo-R and it has skyrocketed to the top of my favorite shmups list!
Ever since the TG-16 came out, I was always curious, never bought one though. Your reviews and the WII virtua console allow me to see what the TG-16 was all about
Nobody can disagree, that the music is PHENOMENAL in this game. It sure looks cool, but i heard that the water armor is quite very strong compared to the other armors. mmmh... still, i think i'm buy gate first if possible.
Great review Chris! LoT is easily my second fav game on the duo (Dracula X: Rondo of Blood is my all time fav). LoT has some of the best CD audio ever produced for a video game, the game can get extremely intense, and the crystal currency system is a genius concept (sort of gives the game a Forgotten Worlds feel). Overall, LoT is one of my favs, and one of the best video games ever made. Chris, I saw you noted the game is available on Wii VC. The game was also ported from the Duo to the Sega CD.
Awesome review, and this was one of the first VC games i got for my Wii along with "Gates of Thunder", was this game also on the SegaCD?? Cause I remember seeing a review of this on RetroWareTV, and I think they said it was, and a slight bit different then the SCD version.
Great review Chris! I have this game for my Turbo-CD Super CD-ROM2 system and I love it! I especially like the death growls some of the larger enemies bellow as the die/explode. Unfortunately, I have never been able to beat it because of the aforementioned last stage. I'll have to try your elixer strategy.
Great review Chris. This was one of my favorite games for my Turbo Collection. The best armor for me is the earth armor. When you have that armor fully powered up you can do some serious damage. The music is some of the best you will find in a video game. I would love it if Hudson Soft were to release an HD remake.
Awesome review dude! This an OUTSTANDING shooter in every aspect!! One of my personal favorites! The SEGA CD version is fantastic as well! Loved the bolder music featured in SCD! And believe this I haven't played Gate of Thunder neither back in the time nor now! Must get my hands on it as well!
Ohya baby! The last two stages in this game are just murder but there's no denying it's how fun it is to play especially seeing how impressive looking and sounding it all is. This game always sends a chill down my spine but in a good way. Another great review dude.
I've been meaning to get this one for a while now, but I promised myself I wouldn't get another shmup until I beat the last one (Soldier Blade) I bought.
Great review Chris of one of my all-time favorites! Have you ever played the Sega CD version of Lords? It's pretty excellent, although I don't think it holds a candle to the Duo version.
@snowcon3 I never had the Sega CD version back in the day. I heard that the Duo one was better so I just stuck with that. You know? But....then again, I could have been a tad "bias" (ha ha!!)
Well metalcoola, that's why many of us, like yourself, are probably addicted to shmups, because we suck at them, get mad, and keep playing because we can't get enough, lol.
I'm a fairly new subscriber, and I'm glad to see you covering this game being as this original Turbo version is my all-time #1 favorite video game ever made. Personally, I would've given it a perfect rating, but you giving it a 4 and a half is nothing to cry about.
he bucci, great review. i say this before i watch the review cuz they are always awesome. anyway, whats is your favorite chadwarden quote? mine is "chadwarden seen his fare share of illegal mexican niggaz" lololol
Superb review! I love this game. Amazing that it's now available on virtual console, it feels like one of those gems that will lay undiscovered for many years. The Japanese version has some additional synthesized speech from the shopkeeper, which always spooks me out - it has stadium reverb and delay.
Wow this game looks excellent. Wish I had the system to play this on. Keep these Turbo reviews coming, they are a lot of fun to watch. This is a system that didn't get much attention so it is nice to see it talked about.
out of curiosity do you record the game-play footage from the console or from an emulator? if you record it from the console I was wondering what you use since it look so clear and crisp :) thanks
I record the footage using my Digital 8 camcorder (which connects nicely to the "composite" cables coming out of the Turbo Duo). Somehow when it transfers from analogue to digital, it seems to add a crispness to the picture. Then...when I digitize it into my computer for editing, it retains the colors and sharpness. Honestly, I too was surprised how nice the quality was.
@TheDevilBurning Awesome. I'm glad you enjoy it. I heard the Sega CD version is pretty good. Is it pretty much the same? I never bothered getting that one back in the day since I already had it on the Turbo. You know?
I bought Gate of Thunder on the Wii a long time ago, but never seem to get past the first stage even, kind of gave up on it. Got Lords of Thunder today, it is far easier to survive for a while it seems, maybe because the weapons are more powerful? Specially when I bought the "3 power bar" upgrade in the shop at the start.

@metalcoola
Well metalcoola, that's why many of us, like yourself, are probably addicted to shmups, because we suck at them, get mad, and keep playing because we can't get enough, lol.

@JayDee284 That I am not sure. I never played the Sega CD version (since I already owned the Turbo one, you know?). Thanks for watching.

I'm a fairly new subscriber, and I'm glad to see you covering this game being as this original Turbo version is my all-time #1 favorite video game ever made. Personally, I would've given it a perfect rating, but you giving it a 4 and a half is nothing to cry about.
Please keep up the great work on these videos.

Superb review! I love this game. Amazing that it's now available on virtual console, it feels like one of those gems that will lay undiscovered for many years. The Japanese version has some additional synthesized speech from the shopkeeper, which always spooks me out - it has stadium reverb and delay.

@futurematt5 Ha ha. Very true. :)

TheDevilBurning 1 year ago
@TheDevilBurning No emulation for me, no. Ha ha.
Thanks!!

awesome game... I have it on sega cd :) your review is also very good and I didn't get bored at all man!
TheDevilBurning 1 year ago
@TheDevilBurning Awesome. I'm glad you enjoy it. I heard the Sega CD version is pretty good. Is it pretty much the same? I never bothered getting that one back in the day since I already had it on the Turbo. You know?
Thanks.
