  • Politics, religion and thoughts on the BBC aside, this is a lovely clip and a great display of how much more effort they put into TV presentation back into the 70s as opposed to now.

  • at least tv at christmas time in the 70's and 80's

were magical but not anymore but it was the golden age of television

back in the day where christmas tv was worth watching it with the whole

family together infront of the fireplace watching it's a wonderfull life .

  • It has echoes of the later COW globe, introduced in 1985.

  • @Feisty1967 Echoes come after an event, not before.

  • I remember our whole family used to stand saluting in the living room when this wouldcome on the tv...and at the end we would all shout 'FUCKTHE POPE...FUCK THE POPE'

  • @007bondspy Why did you do that?

  • @Feisty1967 Simply, we are all inbreed protestants.

  • The globe looks like the globe in Universal Studios.

  • The BBC always had a certain sense of class in those days.

  • That "Goodnight" sounded rather blunt. It made me laugh the way he said it, not even a Merry Xmas or anything. How very English.

  • why the transmissions of the BBC channels often ended with the British national anthem?

  • to let johnny foreigner know whos boss.

  • that is, the BBC is a public company, right?

  • @vc210790 Not both BBC channels, just BBC-1 BBC-2 either closed down with no tune, or with some classical music or something like that. No national anthem.

it was a tradition carried on from many old-fashioned british cinemas, after the last film they showed that day, they would play the national anthem as a mark of respect for the queen and our country. and that's the same reason why the BBC and many ITV companies played the national anthem as they closed down each night.

  • The globe here bears more than a passing resemblance to the COW globe of 1985 onwards.

  • That globe looks familiar...

  • I'm sure that the Xmas ident shown is the 1975 Xmas ident with a 1974 clock tagged on to it.

  • The globe and the background were the same, but the lettering was quite different- in 1975 being the word "Christmas" above "BBC1".

  • Agreed. Though these days we'd probably all be treated to some awful Islamic music instead, in case the National Anthem offened someone.

  • @CelticReject Bigot.

  • @dutchgoing Yes, I think I have become one over the last 10 years or so. I think the reason for my bigotry is due to the the fact that I just cannot stand by and watch whilst the country within which I was born, raised and live is gradually taken over by people from overseas. I can't stand the PC BS which is used by our corrupt political overseers to hijack our freedom of speech. But mostly I cannot stand people like you who think you're superior, whereas in fact you've been conned and blinded.

  • @CelticReject We are a nation entirely composed of foreigners and have been for a very long time, over 2000 years at least. The idea that we have a distinct pure identity and gene pool is sheer paranoid tabloid delusion, nothing to do with PC. Your comment on 'Islamic music' shows you to be ignorant of other cultures & a petty racist. We had an empire and shat on other people for a long time, the consequence is that they have some link to the UK and even some justification for being here.

  • @dutchgoing Though your correct that these islands have been inhabited by a number of cultures for thousands of years. I feel that the huge influx of foreigners over the last 15 is unprecedented. I really don't blame them for wanting to be here either. If I were them, I'd do the same. However, I am tired of watching our culture being denied, even torn up, to accommodate them. I am in no doubt that the wishes of the predominantly muslim newcomers, are being catered for above those of the British.

  • @CelticReject We don't have any culture or community in the 'white' UK any longer & we don't know how to respond to people who actively have these things. Where does it say that most immigrants are Muslim? You need to stop reading the tabloids for a while.

  • @dutchgoing Additionally, I have many friends who are not Caucasian. And I adore the music, foods and cultures that exist around the world. One must not forget however that there are those who really do wish to replace Christianity/western morality with Islam, and will stop at nothing to accomplish this. Yes, I know, Christianity history is also far from peaceful. But, look at film of say London from the early 1900's. Then look at film of London today. Socially the place is unrecognizable.

  • @CelticReject Yeah Yeah you've got black & Asian friends but you don't speak your true mind to them by the sound of it. If you don't like it here then move to Australia. The UK is still overwhelmingly white, pretty much any city under 400K in population will be mostly white. The UK is a minority Christian country anyway, hardly any of the 'white' people go to church any longer. Christianity has a far more violent history than Islam ever has. I like London because it is multicultural.

  • @CelticReject Well Hitler's bombs took a hand in that. As did the Teddy boys, Hippies and Punks.

  • @CelticReject yawn......so, so predictable...lol

  • @CelticReject LMAO too true mate

  • @CelticReject oh get real you xenophobic cunt

  • @sonydigital1 Give it another 20 years or so.

  • @CelticReject

    The BBC was respected then.

  • @Glenn1967ful The BBC is still very much respected by the majority of the country!

  • @CelticReject yawn, sounds like yet another daily mail myth. there are no more closedowns as we have 24hour tv (a product of the margaret thatchers years of the fee market) think on tht my friend before you pontificate.

  • @gramule Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats. They're all as bad as each other and do not have the UK's interests at heart in any of their decisions. All following the evil EU agenda.

  • @CelticReject lol. 'evil eu agenda', you sure do like your daily mail! end of.

  • @CelticReject Actually he EU is the opposite of evil as it was originally set up to make sure that peace exists between member states.

  • @gramule To say that closedowns no longer exist because of the free market is rather a silly thing to say. Hundreds of channels on $ky, all taking advantage of the free market and many of them close down!

  • @AidanLunn lol. my comment was, not 'rather silly' more 'tongue in cheek' because of the somewhat preditcable islamaphobic comments from CelticReject. blaming everything on 'outsiders', without addressing inner forces, such as the free market, which, inevitably has meant that some channels feel the need (due to commercial pressure) to broadcast 24/7. hope this helps.

  • One of the final appearances of the 1972-74 italicised BBC 1 ident. The next one, in Futura Bold font was only days away (the following Saturday???).

  • Jimwoodward1212 - the reason for the change of globe is that they were 15 minutes into 24th December - although this is still technically 23rd December 1974 as it was listed at the end of that day's Radio Times listings.

  • Thanks for posting this closedown and also my request Jimwoodward1212!

although they even played the normal version of the national anthem on a 78 rpm which was faster.

  • pretty amazing considering that this came from a home video recording from *1974*. This was from the days before VHS or Betamax.

This was recorded on Philips N1500 tape!
