I think I'm pretty good with words. But . . . I can't describe this music. And I have no desire to try. It infiltrates my being and I blissfully float away with it . . . body and soul.
This recording of “Body and Soul,” (I think) is from 1939, is a tour de force made over three minutes in one set - nonstop - no session check, no retakes - nothing but Coleman Hawkins' improvisational genius translating instructions from his muse. Amazing! It has to be one of the most perfect jazz solos of all time.
With this, he gave the tenor sax it's place as a solo instrument - a benchmark for all future tenor players. The second chorus blows my mind, phrases coming from all directions, backed by the so sensitive orchestra - leading to that wonderful crescendo.
Is there any instrument that can top the sax??????I have loved the sax since I was pre=teen. I have an out-of-body experience when I listen to a lovely sax ....Yep, I am transported back ,in time, dancing to this song, Body and Soul . Awesome song and sax....What a winning collaboration.....Thank you for posting this beauty, here.
@Arizona22Rose awesome to see that i am not alone in my love for saxophone! and i know what you mean when you listen to these awesome vintage tracks and it's beyond description... the tone is just so beautiful... i can't describe it with any word besides beautiful.
kanye west, black eyed peas, whatever music kids listen to these days, they cannot even compare to this music, which is lovely, creative, playful, free. thank god for jazz... one of the last true forms of music
this is extraordinary- i go hot & cold all over listening to this. I usually go for Lester over the Hawk, but this tells a story as eloquent, if not more so, than any of Pres's. 3 minutes of humanity functioning at its very highest level
Just heard that among the recently discovered Savory recordings is a 1940 night club version of this that runs 3:00 longer and is may be better than this. Hope we get to hear it eventually.
@Waylandm46 ...Have you heard anymore on this recording you speak of?! It excites me so to hear what you are saying...I hope to hear it soon..although to be honest I dont think my heart could handle much better than this...
perhaps the finest sax solo of all time.
