I love listening to some great ragtime players like Glen Jenks, Bill Westcott, or of course Claude Bolling... But I have to say you definately bring something in rag-playing, since, where most pianists seems to play in a "chopped" or "ragged" way (yes, it makes sense... ^^), your playing feels more emotionnal, and sometimes less "mechanical". It seems that you put your guts in your interpretation, and this gives an amazing rendition !
For sure a great source of inspiration, thank you for that.
A note from one of your subscribers- if you can even keep up with comments these days--- it's been awhile since you posted anything new. I wonder if you're ok, and if you're ever going to treat your followers to more lovely piano music?
@carolchill Sorry I haven't posted anything in ages, I've been dealing with alot of things in my life, both good and bad. But I promise that I will post again someday. I have alot of ideas for future videos that aren't just contained to ragtime or even piano, so stay tuned!

Who are you? I haven't heard such a wonderful command of the piano since Glenn Gould. Do you have a CD out? I would love to buy it and listen to you play driving along.
I've been listening to your rags for a while now, and I have to say, I've absolutely fallen in love with this performance. I've heard a dozen other versions, but... none quite capture the feeling like you do. This is the ultimate inspiration for me. Thank you so much for pouring your passion into this music. Wonderful, truly.
this is how i learn to copy on the piano , i love this music. maple leaf rag and entertainer are also great and it its my dream to be able to play them. i envy one who can play them i would play the piano for a living if i could play these wonderful tunes
I can not stop listening to your awesome piano skills, I'm so jealous I wish I did not get distracted by sports right now. Piano last longer than your ability to play sports. Good Job! Never stop Playing!
@EmulatorDX look at the best professional piano players/musicians. All of them are EXPRESSIVE and put emotion into their playing, if you keep your body upright and stiff, you can't feel the music. Who are you to comment on how someone plays something? I'd like to see YOU play any piece as good as chocotiger.
I told someone I would try this out, and now he has asked me to actually play this... awh... Hope it will turn out just a percentage of your great performance here =)
Man- It's truly amazing when someone can pump their music with so much soul, but be so subtle about it. That's when performance really shines. You've really made the song so tight, but you're so loose with it. My only request: Keep Playing so you can spread this tremendously rich music! :D
question: how long does it take you to learn a scott joplin song? his rythms are so hard, ive been trying to learn maple leaf rag for months and i still cant get it! you play amazingly though.
Why is everyone playing this song like they're Liberace??? It's ragtime for God's sake, down and dirty ragtime. The sound of the brothels! Play it hard and straight. Have some fun instead of sitting there like you're serenading the Queen of England.
Modern players of ragtime take themselves far too seriously these days.
I will upload the real version of this song played by Joplin himself shortly.
@BenNCM I think you are confusing someone who is into the MUSIC with someone who is into themselves. I would guess that chocotiger is into the music. He seems to be enjoying playing not busy thinking about the historical and environmental context of the music.
Me? I'll keep enjoying chocotiger's playing and Joplin's music!
@GlueFactoryBJJ As you bring up the distinction, how are you so sure that the guy isn't doing both at the same time i.e. enjoying playing whilst also enjoying brandishing the kind virtuosic embellishments usually reserved for classical greats? The two aren't mutually exclusive.
He has a right to interpret music as he sees fit but this display of gratuitous would have even Stevie Wonder cringing (if he could see that is).
@BenNCM Alright, you got me. I DON'T know. I can't read his mind. Perhaps I'm just not all hung up on the visual part of the YouTube video and focus on the audible. After all, that's what music is all about.
Then again, maybe it is because I find myself doing similar things when I'm really into the music. Hey, different strokes for different folks...
@GlueFactoryBJJ I know what you're saying about the visual aspect but the fact is that it's impossible to separate the musical from the visual, and more to the point, why would you want to? Every piece of music automatically conjures up visions in the mind of the listener and so when music of Scot Joplin is coursing through the veins of chocotiger, he starts to embody these personal visions and creates an aesthetic; one I unfortunately find absolutely nauseating.
@BenNCM As I said, different strokes for different folks. AFAIK, Joplin MAY have played it like chocotiger. We don't know as there isn't film of him playing (AFAIK).
Music's an auditory art form. Art is supposed to create an emotional response. However, when the interpretations are recorded in a visual arena like YouTube, the visual is often necessary to prove s/he is actually playing. FWIW, try closing your eyes and enjoy the art form in its purest form and forget the distracting visual.
@GlueFactoryBJJ I tried closing my eyes and it simply made the visuals more intense. What is going through your mind when you listen to music with your eyes closed. Do you see absolutely nothing at all? I find this hard to believe.
If Joplin played like chocotiger then he would have been bottled upside the head in the saloon after the first flourish. Can you possibly watch Pine Apple Rag played by Bachscholar and tell me your thoughts on the way he plays it.
@BenNCM Well, you've got me. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. Seriously, I cannot see how you can compare a video of a person playing just showing his hands (Bachscholar) and someone who shows himself AND his hands (chocotiger).
Besides, I don't think anyone cared what Joplin was or wasn't doing while playing. I'd imagine they were too busy enjoying the music, drinking with their friends, and/or picking up women.
If you don't like it, fine. I do. Different strokes for different folks.
It is true. I don't brag about anything, it just was necessary to say at the time. It is a gift. I get it from both my parents. I will post videos of me playing ragtime when I get a real piano in may, AND drums playing. I'm multi-instrumental. I also play guitar. Don't worry you shall see videos. Good English by the way ;)
just wondering, how did you learn to play those songs? sheet, ear, or somethin else? i learned the maple leaf rag by ear and i want to learn the pineapple rag but i cant find anything to learn from.
My friend, let me tell you. I CAN NOT read sheet music. /: I learn everything by ear, and I'm going to be learning this by ear very shortly. And you want to learn this beautiful song? I recommend if you can learn by ear (it is a gift, I'm blessed) than learn this by watching, and listening to this video OVER AND OVER analyzing every sound and finger placement. That's how I did it. But it comes naturally to me. I hope it does to you to.
Yeah I did learn it by ear, as well as Elite Syncopations. Don't worry, I'm sure you will grow in sight reading. I'm seeing to it that I do. I'm a sight reading noob. Haha
You have a real talent! I love playing the piano...and although I haven't been able to really practice lately, I think its amazing that you can play such a complicated, beautiful work of art by a famous artist without the music sheets right in front of you! I can play easier songs like that, but you're truely amazing!! Thanks for sharing your talent with others and making their day! :D
I must admit, Scott Joplin is the ONLY ''modern'' artist that I LOVE. I fell in love with The Entertainer while watching Charlie Chaplin one day, and you play the music so well. Also, congrats on 1 million views on The Entertainer.
Yeah. Scott Joplin is great. Have you heard any of Gershwin's music? Like, Rhapsody in Blue? If you haven't, you might like it. Gershwin was a "modern" composer too. But it's classical jazz. I don't know if you like that or not.
@Viola1059 You love only one modern artist? Not even Ludovico or Ehren Starks? If you've never heard of them I implore you to atleast try them out. You won't just like them, you'll love'em :)
I've heard 'The Entertainer' for the first time, played during a very old silence movie 'the sawmill'. See, i bought a DVD-box, containing movies from Laurel and Hardy. Unfortunately, there wasn't a single movie, where Laurel and Hardy played together! See, it where movies, during their solocareers, so i saw 'Laurel', and 'Hardy' seperate XD.
(the sawmill, 1922, had only the 'Hardy-part' of the duo)
The tempo should be sped up only a little bit, however, try using less staccatos because it seems very unnatural, and I realize that about your pieces and applaude you for your originality, however, the staccatos are just too much for this song.
not true, Joplin explicitly mentions in his music books that the tempo should never be 'too fast' - he does not mention that his music can be played slow.
Scott Joplin placed a notice at the top of his pieces: "Notice! Dont play this piece fast, It is never right to play "Ragtime" fast." This is beautifully played.
dear thelizinator, i have in may hands some Scott partitures and i dont see a notice like that in anyone, nevertheless, i remind you that notes themselves have a time value and based in that i confirm my last comment, this piece is played so slow..... greetings....
So charming, so sweet, so poignant... but I always feel a great sadness when I hear Scott Joplin's music, because I can't help but reflect on his tragic life and brutal fate. He died never aware of the joy and heartfelt pleasure his music would bring the world decades later. Maybe he has reincarnated and feels it.
nice job! and i love the fact that you are puting a lot of emotion into it! it joplin would be proud. no matter how many times i play it, i always have trouble around 1:13 to 1:17.
Thanks for uploading all these Joplin rags! I've been playing through the complete rags book and anytime I have a question about how to play something I check here. Thanks!
I'm 10 & learning this for my grade 7. Quite a good piece, actually

joeyscorpionking 2 years ago
not true, Joplin explicitly mentions in his music books that the tempo should never be 'too fast' - he does not mention that his music can be played slow.

buy one of scott joplin's sheet music
it almost always says "NOT FAST"

I want your back beat to be stronger and your rythmn to be looser. Otherwise your interpretation of Joplin is very good! What else do you do?

You can "want" in one hand and....

Outstanding. Take criticism in stride. At this point, you already know that. It's your interpretation and I like it.

I think the tempo is pretty close. Don't forget this music was composed around 1900

@scorekeepn
I agree - It sounds pretty much just like on my "The Sting" album.
Nemspy 2 years ago
I'd say you're teh reincarnation of him but instead of composing you play the 'Songs'
P.S. I don't know the right term
krijger103 2 years ago
i think this is played very slow, please try again speeding up this piece, i'm sure you can do it and it will be closer to the original.

Scott Joplin placed a notice at the top of his pieces: "Notice! Dont play this piece fast, It is never right to play "Ragtime" fast." This is beautifully played.
thelizinator 2 years ago
dear thelizinator, i have in may hands some Scott partitures and i dont see a notice like that in anyone, nevertheless, i remind you that notes themselves have a time value and based in that i confirm my last comment, this piece is played so slow..... greetings....
chorizoalegre 2 years ago
Really? What is the "time value" of a whole note in seconds? And what "original"? You have a recording of Joplin himself playing this?
seth0351 2 years ago
It's called a piano roll. The tempo of this compared to the original played by Scott Joplin are almost exactly the same.
shinrai77 2 years ago 2
@seth0351 Joplin never made a recording of Pine Apple Rag
Doug19752533 2 years ago
@ Doug19752533: No shit. That was my point. Did you intend to direct that to shinrai77?
seth0351 2 years ago
you really loved scott joplin's compositions right?.
well theres one thing i have to say..its enjoyable without a doubt xD
one more thing..did you learn it by your self or your attending some piano lessons??..
kc0703chua 2 years ago
I don't mean this as an insult but out of interest are you a classically trained pianist?

So charming, so sweet, so poignant... but I always feel a great sadness when I hear Scott Joplin's music, because I can't help but reflect on his tragic life and brutal fate. He died never aware of the joy and heartfelt pleasure his music would bring the world decades later. Maybe he has reincarnated and feels it.
