  • THE BOMB THAT FELL ON NIAGARA

by Geoff Kelly and Louis Ricciuti

    Google the above!

As large as Love Canal was/is it is only a small part of the ongoing chemical and radioactive dumps around Niagara Falls.

  • 1:01 Lois Gibbs "and i did not know about Love Canal"

Makes you think about how much or how little we know about what could be buried beneath our feet.

    Probably nothing, mayby not.

  • can't decide tothis day if I love her or hate her..I'm originally from Love Canal-born and raised on 101st.It was the greatest neighborhood on the planet..there willnever be another!!!

  • yah, well mafia goombas or not, human beings still have the freedom to make the right choices regardless of the threat of losing thier fingers or whatever. Hooker Chemical is still irresponsible and cowardly on top of it if your claim is correct.

  • @lilaclang Hooker said it wasn't fit to be built on. They did and said everything they possibly could. In NO WAY can any RATIONAL human being blame them for what was obviously the Education Dept's obvious carelessness, blame, neglect and outright criminal act.

  • I love people who fight for what is right!

  • What do people think of putting a park on top of it, naming ti after William T. Love (e.g. William T. Love Memorial Park) and building an environmental education center and naming it for Lois Gibbs? The reason for the environmental education center is so people are aware if anything stupid like this happens again...and hopefully it won't. Lois Gibbs, you are an amazing person!

  • Lois - you are a true inspiration. I am the founder of a Citizens Group in Pompton Lakes, NJ called Citizens For A Clean Pompton Lakes (CCPL). We are living in a horrible toxic cocktail in the contaminated area known as the DuPont plume. I have been fighting for what is right for the residents in Pompton Lakes since the release of our vapor intrusion contamination to the public in June 2008. We also have soil and groundwater contamination and to-date if affects over 450 homes.

  • Grew up on the Cdn side of the river. In the 70's we fished the lower river and a lot of the fish had sores on them. The water use to smell real funky. I'm sure they didn't contain very much of that stuff. It's better today down there, but the problem is still only a few miles upstream...

  • I thought those were your noses

  • I grew up in Niagara Falls stayed to stay in love canal in a projects called griffin manor ! My brother grew up with alot of health problems because of it and til this day have them !

  • im 34 years old and grew up in the town of tonawanda.like 15 minutes from here.seen it for the first time in early 90's it was like i went in time.very creepy i actually seen stuff left from the late 70's clothing, furniture, vacums old tv;s even the inside of the houses looked lived in like the 70's from what i was able to see threw the windows.then i went back in 2006 to show someone and they tore down the school and fixed up soem homes still really scary and depressing to think all those people

  • @RavishingRedheadd

Tonawanda has got some chemical problems too. It was just on the news. So scary

  • @RawFedSkye yes i live there but not in the bad part were they have the tonawanda coke troubles.been threw love canel its really scary place.

  • @RawFedSkye btw which parts of tonawanda did they mention? bet it was way down sherdian drive near grand island.there is really bad chemical smells around there and if you go on the thruway near the grand island bridges i always smell it.

  • @RavishingRedheadd

I'm not exactly sure. It was on the news just a few days ago. But if you look up Toxic in Tonawanda in Google search, you will see people have been complaining for a while. I heard Niagara Falls/Buffalo/Tonawanda and all those areas have lots of toxic waste sites/problems. :(

  • I'm originally from Niagara Falls, and the part of this story that has never been accurately portrayed is that it was a bunch of Mafia types running the Board of Education that forced Hooker to sell the land for $1, then subsequently developed the land against Hooker's objections - it was these goombas that should have gone to jail...but Hooker was held to blame instead.

  • I would love to see any proof that you have making these allegations..Till then total Bull shit.

  • Do some research and you'll discover what I'm saying is true. It was reported and documented at the time, it just wasn't sensational enough for the liberal media to divert attention from the "big, evil corporate" types.

  • @angrydoug, toxic people and organizations always seem able to silence anyone who exposes them for who they are.

This is why I suggest to look beyond approved and sanctioned images of people, public and private organizations by researching [keep in mind Intent, Context, Circumstance, and Consequences] how they attain wealth, power, authority, and supporters especially how they keep them that can reveal their personality and character.

  • Check my Love canal video Creekside Woman based on my song about it...

    Jon. ..

  • I've never seen this woman speak before but knew somewhere 1 person took a stand and changed the world. She has been my hero for many years. Thank you for putting this online.

  • because the guy who found it was william love and also because it connects to the niagra falls

  • y is it called love canal?

  • The entrepeneur William Love had an idea before alternating current was developed that he would build a 'Model City' that would run on a generator that would send power out from the center of a futuristic city he got mone to start digging a canal from the upper Niagara River to the Lower Niagara and use it as a power generator around the time of the generator when alternating current was developed it fell through

  • I lived on 99th street Love Canal as a 2 year old, and moved across the creek when the homes were demolished. Spent most of my life in that area. Really hits home. Lois Gibbs is a hero for many many families.

  • i live about an hour and a half away from there, and never knew that. An amazing story, and an amazing woman, a true hero

  • OMG!! this is my exhibiotns topic for history day!!

  • Unless you lived there beforehand you can not understand/appreciate what this did and how it devastated a whole generation of people. My childhood home /neighborhood..which was so very happy and beautiful...is gone. I have been sooooo sick due to it.............I lived on a street that had 10 homes. Out of those 10 homes ..9 have had cancer deaths....that is normal? Let the world beware!!

  • I grew up there. I witnessed this. Lois Gibbs was a mover and shaker. My childhood was shattered due to this. I was 18 when this was disclosed. To this day I look at my child and worry about birth defects and lifetime problems.

It's been 30 years. No one can give me answers.....no one knows.............and can you believe they have repopulated this area?? Like a clay cap will stop it?

  • As I mentioned to you on another video, nvbouvier, my uncle was a part of the crew that set up the waste water decontaminating facility. He passed away almost 10 years ago from complications caused by 30 years of working in toxic areas.

My prayers are with you and your family, I know how impossibly difficult this experience was.

  • people still live on the edge of the place-never

  • I once saw a show about this on the history channel, called "Mega disasters" Its such a sad story people buy houses not knowing whats under them then they sick and die and in the end are not left option other than leave. This woman is awesome she brought attention to it and I have no doubt alot of lives were saved because of it. people knew to get out. great vid thanks for sharing.

  • What a terrible mistake people made. It's horrible how so many people were ill because of hazardous industry waste.

  • What model of camera was used for this interview? It looks really good.

  • Thank you so much for putting this on. I have read lots about Love Canal, but to actually hear Lois Gibb talk...! Although there are a lot of other (worse!) Superfund sites, it is very inspiring to see/hear one of the first common public environmental activist. She's a real hero to keep it up after so much trouble.

  • Very informative. I grew up in southern Niagara county (currently residing in Erie county) and have always had a facination with the Love Canal story. Thank you for posting this. Eagerly awaiting part two.
