They've been opening for major bands, had a spot in multiple festivals.And they've only had an album out for 1 year! Dear god even bands like Dream Theater weren't even known until after their 2nd, and weren't doing major tours with big name bands until after their 5th.

If anything, Black Tide is the luckiest quickest rising band in all of the metal scene.

And then there's bands like Between the Buried and Me. After almost 10 years, they're still an extremely underground band.

all depends on ur style with music. if the style of music you play fits with the current trend, you'll rise to the top pretty quick and you'll be real famous real fast. but if you're style doesn't fit with mainstream tastes -- no matter how talented your group is at songwriting or playing -- you're not likely to make it huge. Case in point, almost any prog band on the planet, at least in the eyes of north american ppl lol.

Though, finally a band has broken that mold.

Dream theater reached top 10 in 13 countries, including #6 in America and #2 in Japan. Also they have the 12th best selling album in the world for this week (beaten by about 5 Michael Jackson albums).

That means Dream Theater is the first band to have a #1 album in any country (Finland) top 10 in as many countries, and the first Prog metal band to break the top 10 on the billboard 200 in america (beating Hannah Montana, thank god).

well that is true for sure. But listen to their new stuff. (dream theater that is). its much much more accessible than previous records were -- with songs like a rite of passage and wither. these songs are, imo, fairly mainstream in nature, even tho they are definitely still DT flavour. not disagreein with you at all, and i still love DT to death and love the new album... but in recent times they've been playin more and more accessible music. Reroute to remain i guess -- thanks In Flames lol

But on the other hand they have (A Nightmare to Remember, Count of Tuscany, and Best of Times are all giganticly Prog, and the fact that Shattered Fortress is basically a reprise for the entire 12 step suite added with it's mind bogglingly complex riffs doesn't make it too accessible.

On the other hand there are some other pretty damn good selling prog bands that aren't too accessible

HAHA on the porcupine tree comment. And i agree that there are some heavily prog songs on BC&SL but listen to A Rite of Passage and Wither. Fairly mainstream songs, even Best of Times isnt that wacky compared to alot of music today. Anyway, we could debate this all day and i know u dont really want to haha. Anyway, i love dream theater. And Opeth may just be my new favourite band. Never thought anything would replace DT but i was wrong lol

How? You've got four pads which are very much like drums, you hit them with actual drumsticks in time with a beat. Admittedly, you get the beat shown to you as a scrolling chart, but playing it does help to develop personal rhythm, sticking speed and maybe even technique.
