I think that the release of ADWD will be a huge succes as well the tv series. That's great marketing. And i also believe GRRM already wrote a great deal for his 6th book, The Winds of Winter. Although he will never admit that.
@TheOKTerrificable yea that's currently one of my greatest fears. I have to know how the story ends! although I think Ive already deduced the main plot involving jon snow and danaerys ;)
@Krandolph17 LOL - remember when it was supposed to be October of 2008? He posted a set date on his blog, but he's STILL not done with it. It'll be longer than Storm of Swords though.
I don't give a darn on whether it's his book, his prerogative, his right ...blah blah blah. I want to read the freaking books myself N O W, while I still can!!! not when I'm 80 and blind! I want to read the rest of the story, not have my great grand children read it to me as I'm convalescing in a retirement home. Is that too much to ask? God has punished me, why did I have to be a fan of the fantasy genre?! Its authors either take too long to finish or kick the buck before they do...aggggg!!!
@mbarrientos1 Oh no...I just started this series. Freakn love it. I dont know if I can handle another disapointment like dune. I have read all the dune series 4 times and read the first book ritually once a year. I hope there is a heaven so I can finish Dune how Frank Herbert intended. I think about it so often.....how does Dune end?.......I hope this series doesnt leave me feeling the same way. I started A Clash of Kings last night and am 200 pages in. its so good.
Cussing out George on a MB isn't going to make him write any faster. The reason the book took so long to come out, was that he ended up re-writing it.
Folks, this was more than 3 and a half years ago. He has been milking the readers for years without delivering. This book will leave people with a bad taste in their mouths, should he ever finish it. He alledgedly has 2 other books planned after this.
Great, either he will pull a Robert Jordan or I will have something to read 20 years from now when I retire. He seems to be doing everything but writing the damn book.
ppl need to realize that he hasn't been writing too much because he is busy with the HBO series coming out. Once it's out on television, he'll release the book.
Stannis is so fricking badass i hope he wins everything and becomes king :P tyrion can be the kings hand and Stannis can ditch his ugly ass wife and marry Dany instead :) win win for everybody (exept for the starks)
G.R.R.M is great at 3 things, Writing, not Writing, and EATING. :)
It's a shame I listened to this as I'm still on the 4th book.... :( I remember Stannis trying to get Jon to become lord of Winterfell and be known as Jon Stark.. The 5th book makes it sound like he will eventually become Jon Stark, Lord of Winterfell.. What do ya'll think?
@shauwn78 no, definitely not. the entire chapter can be found at the grrm official website under dance of dragon samples, read it when you've finished the fourth book.
@shauwn78 I think he's gonna go looking for the only other heir to winterfell and first ranger Benjen. The Stark bloodline is running thin gather who's left!
shut up and read something else you bitches. why dont we throw him in some siberian labor camp till he finishes the series? this isn't soviet russia for god's sake.
The last book came out over 5 years ago. He gave up making excuses 2 years ago. What a douche bag. HBO series, playing cards, calenders, etc, and he can't even be bothered to finish the next book.....that he claimed was already written when the last one was published.
One person says he's slow at releasing books and suddenly this is everyone's opinion. Just shut up and wait, it's not like there's nothing ELSE to read
If he's not committed to this series, I'm not either.
Dear George,
I stayed on for as long as I could, but I've forgotten large portions of the arc and countless details since the last hardback. As entertaining as your work is, it's not worth staying interested while you drag this yarn across two decades.
At this point, your story will never match the version I've written and rewritten in my head repeatedly while you travelled and signed books instead of writing the next one.
Well...After reading the Author's Acknowledgments section p.1059 at the end of 'A Feast For Crows' it sure did not leave a warm fuzzy feeling that he'd have the next novel out soon.
Wow. I'm certainly stymied by that circa-1992 wit.
Care to drop any "You can't handle the truth" remarks in there? Maybe a Church Lady reference or "Now is ze time on 'Sprockets' ven vee dance," while they're at their freshest?
Neat.
So is anyone else just betting that George is going to prime-rib his way into an ICU before this series is done anyway?
Your extravagant proclamation of disinterest is good evidence that you're probably going to be one of the first few geeks in the bookstore.
This attitude of entitlement is ridiculous. Martin doesn't give a shit about you and doesn't have to. He owes his readers absolutely nothing. We are fortunate and PRIVILEGED to have been given any part of the series. Rather than express appreciation you harrow him like whiny beggar. Ungrateful scum.
Damn right we're entitled. If writers truly wrote for themselves, then why publish at all? They could just journal it or make copies and hand out manuscripts to passersby.
But seeing as how George has CHOSEN to be contracted for his talents, it's only reasonable to expect him to deliver as promised.
Geek? Whiny beggar? Ungrateful scum?
Eh, maybe. But you forgot one more: correct.
You uptight, humorless twat.
Oh, now I see why you resort to blind insults. That felt good.
He publishes to make money, obviously... hardly a selfless act. And unless you are among his publishers, I see no reason why his contract is any business of yours. He did not make any agreements with you. He is not indebted to you. You got everything you've paid for and certainly more than you deserve.
Blah blah blah and for an encore I suppose you're going to post that GRRM is not your Bitch link? Quite correct its the other way around you are his bitch. Why shouldn't he give a shit about the people that pay for his house and food? He should at least be a little more professional about saying things that aren't realistic like about how half of dance was done five years ago.
Does anyone else notice it says 2006..... it is now 2009 and it's still not out. It is supposed to be out this december.. but i have doubts. It was supposed to be out a while ago. It's worth the wait though so i can contain myself.
it seems like martin is a pilot that never learned to land the plane, he just circles the runway waiting for the gas to run out. when the first three books blew up he and his publishers saw an opportunity to make some serious money by turning a story that should have ended in five books into a seven book bonanza. seven books until they realize that people like the majority of you will buy every book that bears the title "a song of ice and fire," at which point it will turn into a 9 book series.
my msg 4 all those houndin and beratin george, have u people no lives to lead, are ur existiences so trivial that u most wait impatiently for a book to keep u going, and what about wen u finish this book, are u goin to start pressin him to finish the nxt one, u care nothing fo his life, only this art he has been blessed with. eventually he will stop writing all together, due to will, or death it matters not. what then will u do? be patient. spend time with ur family read other books live damn it
he didnt raise the stakes, he bit off more than he could chew and proved to fantasy authors everywhere that writing a story this epic is a big mistake.
Tolkien finished his book, which was considerably shorter than ASOIAF. It had a begining, a middle and an end, and it was published in its entirety, not in installments that were six to ten years apart. So far, ASOIAF is about three times the length of LOTR, is still somewhere between 'beginning' and 'middle' and has been on the shelf in an incomplete state for about 13 years.
My friend, we're discussing literature here, not arguing over a soccer team. You need to grow up and learn to offer a contrary opinion in a debate without calling people names. you might do well to try to comprehend arguments presented to you before responding to them. George hasnt raised the stakes until he completes his work. If he never completes it, and I think he wont, he will have definitely bitten off more than he can chew. The quality of his work is excellent, but its still incomplete.
It has taken so long for this book to appear that I have to go back and re-read the entire series again or I'll be lost when it finally does come out!
It is taking ages but it is worth the wait. GRRM is clearly a man of patience, perfection, and excellence. Which are all the reasons why he is the top author and is writing the arguably most sought after novel in the fantasy genre at present.
Patience is a virtue, and I think we all can wait a little longer to read what we've all been craving, 'Dance'. After all, it's better to wait to read something excellent later than to read something flawed sooner.
uhh no....... i dont think they are better. ASOIAF is amazing, nothing can compare. The reason why I mentioned WoT is the same waiting game we r having with ASOIAF. The the author died b4 the books were even done. I dont want the same thing to happen to George
I agree totally. if youve ever read terry goodkind's series. they were totally rushed at the end and it turned out really sloppy all because he wanted to finish the books off asap
You're right, its taking so long because of his patience, perfection and excellence. It has nothing to do with the fact that shooting out graphic novels like he's Marvel and DC combined and attending every single comic book/sci-fi/fantasy/RPG convention in North America and Europe.
im rereading the series b/c i tried reading AFFC when it first came out and for some reason lost interest in it quick and stopped. im in the third book again and im falling in love with series all ov er again :)
This book is taking AGES! I hope its better than AFFC anyway that was quite a bloated mess. Oh and don't get me started about gardens of the Moon series, after reading 2 books I didn't care about any of the characters at all... complete waste of time! maybe I've just been spoilt by GRRM and Robin Hobb ;)
In June 2008... nothing happened. You know, for a book that by his own words was almost done in 2004, it been "upcoming" for quite a length of time now...
go to george rr martins website it says that he should be finished around 2009 somewhere there not in 2013 also the hbo series of a game of thrones should be coming out. the book is a long wait but i want to see how it would be on tv. although it would have been better to make a movie then series bt thats my oppinion. if u like the book watch the show that will be coming out i dont know when also if u go to his website u can pre order jon snows sword. made with stainless steel. costs around $260
There's no movie, there is a HBO series that MAY happen. If it were to happen it wouldn't be for a couple of years I'd say, prolly around the time ADwD finally comes out....
Dont count on anything. Personally I am very pissed off with Mr. Martin because what happened is he is not NEARLY as far along as he should be with the series but he wont admit it, then he gets pissed off at fans for asking when its going to be finished.
I am going to read it still but I lost a TON of respect I had for this guy. My best guess is probably by Christmas.
It has been three years since the last book, a bit ridiculous dont you think?
Nope. Writing something of that length and is VERY taxing. Especially considering the size and scope of the world he's created. When it get's down to the editing process, it really takes a lot out of a person to work on something to massive.
Also considering all of the information he wants to relay to us, the information he still needs to withhold, the facts that he has to weave into the tale and keeping the past books in consideration 3 years sounds about right.
I will be you my life savings you are wrong. It doesnt take over 3 years to write one book, he has already admitted on his live journal that hes way behind on it anyway, so dont talk if you dont even know whats going on.
I read a different series now by Steven Erikson who is now on book 9 out of 10 and each of his books are usually 700+ pages and easily as good as writing as anything George does and he can actually give his fans updates and do interviews regularly to keep his fans updated.
Actually I do know what I'm talking about. People work at different paces. If you've taken into account all of the things that he's working with than it's understandable. Also, saying he's way behind doesn't mean that it's not written. He's more than likely in the editing and reworking stage. He's probably unsatisfied with it and is trying to 'tweak' it into something satisfactory. I read the live journals too so it's asinine for you to insinuate that you have more information that I do.
And Steve Erikson son is not a good comparison, considering that his writing style is a horribly jumbled mess. He's not even in the same league as Martin in terms of quality of writing. So I can see how it would take him much less time to write a longer, but less impressive book than Martin whose works overshadow Erikson's by ten fold.
It's impatient people like you that bitch and moan all the time that keep him from releasing any information on his works. So calm the hell down.
Martin has not informed his fans in any way as to the progression of the book and he owes more to the people that support him then that.
And its opinion that you think Martins work is better then Erikson's, I personally think they are about equal and I am sorry you dont have the reading ability to comprehend that "jumbled mess" that has attracted a huge fan base of readers. Erikson may have a different style of writing the quality is easily equal to that of Martins.
I find it ironic that you spout things like "its opinion that you think Martins work is better then Erikson's" And then go on to question my reading comprehension. We can have a discussion or we can sling insults. Ad hominem arguments are not and never will be applicable.
Secondly Popularity is not a good measuring stick for quality. There are many popular works that have huge followings.
Third, just as its my opinion that Erikson isn't in the same league, it is your opinion that he is.
Fourth, saying the Martin 'owes' fans an form of expediency is selfish, narcissistic, and downright possessive. He has provided fans with a high quality product that he loves. He lets us into his life on a daily basis and informs us with information that he thinks we might enjoy. He doesn't have to do any of that. He is working on the book. He will get it done when he does and we should be glad that he doesn't release a halfhearted work of fiction just for the sake of completion.
I never said he owed fans a form of expediency, he does however owe it to fans to update them as to where he is on with his work. If it wasnt for the people reading it then he wouldnt even be this far in the series so dont even give me that bullshit. He hasnt made any updates in almost a year as to where he REALLY is on the book. So yes he does owe more to his supporters then that.
I want him to release it to his standards, but after three years its not hard to say WHEN.
If popularity is not a good measuring stick fo quality then what would you say to Lord of the Rings, eh? You failed in that point.
Erikson is easily as good as Martin, how many of the Malazan Books of the Fallen have you read??? Please do tell, otherwise your opinion is quite worthless.
What are you talking about? Popularity does not automatically equal quality. Dan Brown novels are incredibly popular, but in terms of quality, they're magazine novels. Eragon is very popular but in terms of quality it's not quite up to snuff with others in the genre. James Patterson is another author that comes to mind. You are proving over and over again that you don't know what you're talking about.
Saying that Erikson is as good as Martin is your opinion. How can you insist that your opinion is correct, and berate me for being so insistent upon mine. It's such blatant hypocrisy that it makes my head spin.
I've read Gardens of the Moon. And found the style to be jumbled, belabored and hectic; and not in a good way. And I read a lot of complicated works. Finishing Erikson's book was a struggle. Contrary to A Game of Thrones, where finishing that book was a delight.
So you read one book out of a 10 book series and come to the conclusion that its a "jumbled mess"? So how can you draw such a conclusion when you have not read any further then the first book? And you never answered to my question of LoTR which is a very popular series, so what do you say to the quality of that?
Sorry to say but the reason you cant understand Eriksons writing is because its BETTER. Try reading through the series to where I am then come on back and try again.
Yes. One book. It only takes one chapter for a competent author to ensnare readers. He should at least be able to do it within a book. The burden is on the author to entertain the reader, not on the reader to be entertained. Questioning my comprehension of the material is an 'ad hominem', and therefore invalid.
LOTR is one example. AND I never said that popular books can't be of high quality, just that popularity doesn't automatically equal quality, as I expressed with the examples I gave.
I can question your comprehension of said material becuause unfortunatly you have not read enough of a partially completed project to make a correct analysis, so unfortuantly any conclusion you attemt to draw in regards to the quality of Erikson's work is actually inonclusive and holds no relevance.
Quality is a subjective term anyways, and each person defenition of it will be different, however you can not judge the quality of an uncompleted car or that of a food which is half cooked.
Gardens of the Moon is a complete book. While it's also part of an overarching story, it stands on its own, as most books in a series do. It's not hard to gather a person's writing style from 300+ pages of reading material. You're just upset that I don't agree with you, so you're trying to belittle my opinion (one of which I share with many others).
And no you cannot question my comprehension of the book I read because you have no knowledge as to whether or not I did or did not comprehend it.
You are upset because I will not agree to what YOU think is right, I am not upset at all, simply making my point. I understand that you could not comprehend Eriskons style of writing based on the fact that you struggled to finish it.
Keep trying but you are preaching to the quire friend, many people are provedly pissed off in regards to his delay of updates and the actual release of the book so you can cry in opposition to my feelings all you like but it only leaves you with nothing.
You can't say the same thing I said and use that as your own argument. That's just asinine. And your continuing to prove me right with your baseless accusations about my comprehension levels to the point that it makes me wonder if you even know what the word means.
I struggled to finish it because of the reasons I gave. It was jumbled. It felt belabored and messy. It was sloppy in its execution. That doesn't mean that I didn't comprehend it. That's your own pretentious assumption, obviously.
Not to mention that you haven't succeeded in countering a single point that I've brought up. Instead you try to make the argument about me as a reader. Which I will not let you do.
FYI: You used the expression "Preaching to the CHOIR" incorrectly. An expression implies that two people agree, which we clearly do not. Not only that but your arguing points that I didn't even make.
Clearly I'm going over your head, so I'll leave it at that. Have a nice day. ;)
Actually I loved Gardens of the Moon and followed it quite well, which goes to say a lot about your ability to read and comprehend really good writing, Its quite obvious it was to complicated for you.
And because of that you are missing out on a very good series with a story that would easily rival that of Martins or Tolkiens books. Its just unfortunate you dont have the intellect to understand any of this, I do feel bad for you.
I appreciate Mr. Martins writing, however my opinion is that he is not appreciating his fans as much as he should be. He should respect his fans a bit more then that, the series wouldnt be much without people that love to read it.
Cry all you would like to, I will retain my opinion and so will everyone else that eagerly awaits an update as to the progress of his next book.
If you followed Martin anyway, you would know he admitted that he has both slowed down in the book, and ran into problems in its production with HUGE parts of it, oh but I thought you were informed. I guess not.
If he was as far along as he should be then he would be able to provide updates with no problems to his fans after almost a year since his last, not much to ask. If you were aware of the situation at all then you could find online in many places that the majority agrees, sorry.
Further yet, The majority of people are pissed off about this delay with no response, otherwise Mr.Martin would not have posted the response he did in regards to this on his website. Now I am allowed to be pissed off about this, and so are all the other people out there who are. Its not hard to give a simple update about something if you are making progress.
You can be pissed off all you want, but you have no right to make demands about anything information about his product he's giving away for free.
And speaking on LOTR, do you know how long it took Tolkien to write those books? 12 years. That's 4 years per book. [even though they're really only one book] Some people simply work slower than others, and the Martin have been spoiled with his constant updates and tidbits. Getting pissed off, and raging at the author is very immature.
I pretty much agree with FroLogic on almost anything in this discussion bur for one thing. Although Gardens of the Moon is disorganized in some ways, the rest of the series shows the writing of Stevento be assuredly up to par with that of Martin. The problem between the two is more that where Martin's tale is character driven and Stevens tale more lot driven.
(3/3)Main concern is Martin's health. His overweight is a serious risk factor, even more so with his increasing age. Unless he changes this dramatically, it might come in between him and ASOIAF.
Guess all I want to say is I can't see him finishing this mighty series.
You must remember that as a story progresses the author needs to give more and more thought to how he is going to wrap things up in upcoming books. On a more hopeful side, maybe hes half done the rest of the series and tying everything together at once. Keep your fingers crossed. I, for one, will await patiently, as I know great works take time especially under immense pressure.
With Game dating back to 95/96 (the release!!!), it has taken Martin well over 14 years to get about 60% of the story complete. Given his tendency to put more time in every upcoming book than he did in the previous one, he will be writing on the remaining 40% for another 14 years.
Let's not forget that when he released Feast, he also declared that Dance was already more than halfway done... the other half of Dance took him 3 years!?!
the thing is we don't know how much of books 5-7 he has actually written, if he had half of dance written when he released feast, then maybe he has half of the next book done when dance is released, maybe he has completed some storylines and is simply having problems with certain other storylines, he could actually have the series nearly finished, we really dont know anything
On the first day of this year Martin announced that the release of Dance was scheduled for the late summer/eary winter. Imagine the blow he would have delivered when he told straight away that he would not have it done before 2009. That's what it all comes down to: another year.
You can read this entire chapter if u want - along with a Tyrion chapter and a Dany chapter (although hers is the same as the one published at the back of A Feast for Crows).
Since someone below asked for a text version here it is.
...spit on me.
As you command sire.
"What did you expect?" Jon might have added. But part of him wondered if the letters had been sealed with a direwolf instead of a crowned stag. What then? If they had been signed Jon Stark, Lord of winterfell. But it was too late for such misgivings.
"You ask much of them your grace, give them time. You will have your answers."
"Answers such as this?!" Stannis crushed Liara's letter in his fist.
"Homage is the duty every subject owes his liege king. Yet all your northmen shun me save the Karstarks."
The Karstarks had little choice. The late Lord Karstark had betrayed the direwolf and spilled the blood of lions. The stag was Karstarks last and only hope.
GRRM is an excellent writing, it's a shame that "deadline" doesn't apply to him, and he takes over 3 years per book. I wonder if DwD is going to be complete or is he going to have to split that in half as well.
The book isn't done yet and the TV series is still in development. They've written a script for the pilot and the rumor is HBO likes it, but hasn't decided if they are going to produce it or not. There is also a King Arthur project they have and apparently intend to do one or the other (but not both). The Westeros project is farther along, though, which is good.
I will be very upset if they pass over ASOIAF for another crappy King Arthur story, both the movies King Arthur and The Last Legion were monstrosities.
Feast for Crows wasnt bad at all, quite good really. Most negative crit for it just boild down to "I didnt get to read about my favorite characters D:"
Exactly. I loved A Feast For Crows and I am very much looking forward to A Dance With Dragons. Future books are also highly anticipated by me and many others. I love this series of books and I have for years. I thought somewhere I read he hopes and wants to finish it by 2011 with two more books. I hope he gets to, as I really love it.
Great author... but i was expecting a better reading. He sounds like an average joe who picks up a book and reads it out loud - which he is. I was just expecting something more like an audiobook type read.
Weakest? I wouldn't say so, just a bit different this time. :) I saw "A Feast For Crows" as a bit of a tense 'rest period' before an even darker gathering storm hits Westeros. :) I'm looking forward to the rest of the series all the more now. :)
Fuck him! He made me wait too long! Ive lost interest, all my attention will be devoted to playing Skyrim anyways.

Get bent.

Neat.
So is anyone else just betting that George is going to prime-rib his way into an ICU before this series is done anyway?
rugbynimbus 2 years ago
Your extravagant proclamation of disinterest is good evidence that you're probably going to be one of the first few geeks in the bookstore.
This attitude of entitlement is ridiculous. Martin doesn't give a shit about you and doesn't have to. He owes his readers absolutely nothing. We are fortunate and PRIVILEGED to have been given any part of the series. Rather than express appreciation you harrow him like whiny beggar. Ungrateful scum.
Unisonus 2 years ago
Damn right we're entitled. If writers truly wrote for themselves, then why publish at all? They could just journal it or make copies and hand out manuscripts to passersby.
But seeing as how George has CHOSEN to be contracted for his talents, it's only reasonable to expect him to deliver as promised.
Geek? Whiny beggar? Ungrateful scum?
Eh, maybe. But you forgot one more: correct.
You uptight, humorless twat.
Oh, now I see why you resort to blind insults. That felt good.

He publishes to make money, obviously... hardly a selfless act. And unless you are among his publishers, I see no reason why his contract is any business of yours. it seems like martin is a pilot that never learned to land the plane, he just circles the runway waiting for the gas to run out. when the first three books blew up he and his publishers saw an opportunity to make some serious money by turning a story that should have ended in five books into a seven book bonanza. seven books until they realize that people like the majority of you will buy every book that bears the title "a song of ice and fire," at which point it will turn into a 9 book series.

I expect George needing less time on finishing The Winds of Winter , in comparison to ADWD.
But damn, it i cannot wait reading the rest of this stellar story.
This series is unmatched really. A masterpiece, his Opus Magnum. He raises the stakes for future fantasy writers. Hell even for writers in general.
ajaxrules1975 2 years ago
he didnt raise the stakes, he bit off more than he could chew and proved to fantasy authors everywhere that writing a story this epic is a big mistake.

DjUmKuE 2 years ago
Tolkien finished his book, which was considerably shorter than ASOIAF. It had a begining, a middle and an end, and it was published in its entirety, not in installments that were six to ten years apart. So far, ASOIAF is about three times the length of LOTR, is still somewhere between 'beginning' and 'middle' and has been on the shelf in an incomplete state for about 13 years.
What was your comparison, again?
exiledred77 2 years ago 2
He didnt raise the stakes?
Writing a series that is planned to be spanned throughout seven books, all which are VERY well done books IS raising the stakes.
Either you're some kind of idiot, or you're jealous of his writing talent. Probably both.
Whitewalls19 2 years ago
My friend, we're discussing literature here, not arguing over a soccer team. You need to grow up and learn to offer a contrary opinion in a debate without calling people names. you might do well to try to comprehend arguments presented to you before responding to them. George hasnt raised the stakes until he completes his work. If he never completes it, and I think he wont, he will have definitely bitten off more than he can chew. The quality of his work is excellent, but its still incomplete.
exiledred77 2 years ago 2

It is taking ages but it is worth the wait. GRRM is clearly a man of patience, perfection, and excellence. Which are all the reasons why he is the top author and is writing the arguably most sought after novel in the fantasy genre at present.
Patience is a virtue, and I think we all can wait a little longer to read what we've all been craving, 'Dance'. After all, it's better to wait to read something excellent later than to read something flawed sooner.
Patience, will eventually pay off.

It has been three years since the last book, a bit ridiculous dont you think?
refuckulate420 3 years ago
He's probably almost done
FroLogic 3 years ago
I will be you my life savings you are wrong. It doesnt take over 3 years to write one book, he has already admitted on his live journal that hes way behind on it anyway, so dont talk if you dont even know whats going on.
I read a different series now by Steven Erikson who is now on book 9 out of 10 and each of his books are usually 700+ pages and easily as good as writing as anything George does and he can actually give his fans updates and do interviews regularly to keep his fans updated.
refuckulate420 3 years ago
Actually I do know what I'm talking about. People work at different paces. If you've taken into account all of the things that he's working with than it's understandable. Also, saying he's way behind doesn't mean that it's not written. He's more than likely in the editing and reworking stage. He's probably unsatisfied with it and is trying to 'tweak' it into something satisfactory. I read the live journals too so it's asinine for you to insinuate that you have more information that I do.
FroLogic 3 years ago
And Steve Erikson son is not a good comparison, considering that his writing style is a horribly jumbled mess. He's not even in the same league as Martin in terms of quality of writing. So I can see how it would take him much less time to write a longer, but less impressive book than Martin whose works overshadow Erikson's by ten fold.
It's impatient people like you that bitch and moan all the time that keep him from releasing any information on his works. So calm the hell down.
FroLogic 3 years ago
Martin has not informed his fans in any way as to the progression of the book and he owes more to the people that support him then that.
And its opinion that you think Martins work is better then Erikson's, I personally think they are about equal and I am sorry you dont have the reading ability to comprehend that "jumbled mess" that has attracted a huge fan base of readers. Erikson may have a different style of writing the quality is easily equal to that of Martins.
refuckulate420 3 years ago
I find it ironic that you spout things like "its opinion that you think Martins work is better then Erikson's" And then go on to question my reading comprehension. We can have a discussion or we can sling insults. Ad hominem arguments are not and never will be applicable.
Secondly Popularity is not a good measuring stick for quality. There are many popular works that have huge followings.
Third, just as its my opinion that Erikson isn't in the same league, it is your opinion that he is.
FroLogic 3 years ago
Fourth, saying the Martin 'owes' fans an form of expediency is selfish, narcissistic, and downright possessive. He has provided fans with a high quality product that he loves. He lets us into his life on a daily basis and informs us with information that he thinks we might enjoy. He doesn't have to do any of that. He is working on the book. He will get it done when he does and we should be glad that he doesn't release a halfhearted work of fiction just for the sake of completion.
FroLogic 3 years ago
I never said he owed fans a form of expediency, he does however owe it to fans to update them as to where he is on with his work. If it wasnt for the people reading it then he wouldnt even be this far in the series so dont even give me that bullshit. He hasnt made any updates in almost a year as to where he REALLY is on the book. So yes he does owe more to his supporters then that.
I want him to release it to his standards, but after three years its not hard to say WHEN.
refuckulate420 3 years ago
If popularity is not a good measuring stick fo quality then what would you say to Lord of the Rings, eh? You failed in that point.
Erikson is easily as good as Martin, how many of the Malazan Books of the Fallen have you read??? Please do tell, otherwise your opinion is quite worthless.
refuckulate420 3 years ago
What are you talking about? Popularity does not automatically equal quality. Dan Brown novels are incredibly popular, but in terms of quality, they're magazine novels. Eragon is very popular but in terms of quality it's not quite up to snuff with others in the genre. James Patterson is another author that comes to mind. You are proving over and over again that you don't know what you're talking about.
FroLogic 3 years ago 2
Saying that Erikson is as good as Martin is your opinion. How can you insist that your opinion is correct, and berate me for being so insistent upon mine. It's such blatant hypocrisy that it makes my head spin.
I've read Gardens of the Moon. And found the style to be jumbled, belabored and hectic; and not in a good way. And I read a lot of complicated works. Finishing Erikson's book was a struggle. Contrary to A Game of Thrones, where finishing that book was a delight.
FroLogic 3 years ago 2
So you read one book out of a 10 book series and come to the conclusion that its a "jumbled mess"? So how can you draw such a conclusion when you have not read any further then the first book? And you never answered to my question of LoTR which is a very popular series, so what do you say to the quality of that?
Sorry to say but the reason you cant understand Eriksons writing is because its BETTER. Try reading through the series to where I am then come on back and try again.
refuckulate420 3 years ago
Yes.
FroLogic 3 years ago
I can question your comprehension of said material becuause unfortunatly you have not read enough of a partially completed project to make a correct analysis, so unfortuantly any conclusion you attemt to draw in regards to the quality of Erikson's work is actually inonclusive and holds no relevance.
Quality is a subjective term anyways, and each person defenition of it will be different, however you can not judge the quality of an uncompleted car or that of a food which is half cooked.
refuckulate420 3 years ago
Gardens of the Moon is a complete book. While it's also part of an overarching story, it stands on its own, as most books in a series do. It's not hard to gather a person's writing style from 300+ pages of reading material. You're just upset that I don't agree with you, so you're trying to belittle my opinion (one of which I share with many others).
And no you cannot question my comprehension of the book I read because you have no knowledge as to whether or not I did or did not comprehend it.
FroLogic 3 years ago
You are upset because I will not agree to what YOU think is right, I am not upset at all, simply making my point. I understand that you could not comprehend Eriskons style of writing based on the fact that you struggled to finish it.
Keep trying but you are preaching to the quire friend, many people are provedly pissed off in regards to his delay of updates and the actual release of the book so you can cry in opposition to my feelings all you like but it only leaves you with nothing.
refuckulate420 3 years ago
You can't say the same thing I said and use that as your own argument. That's just asinine. And your continuing to prove me right with your baseless accusations about my comprehension levels to the point that it makes me wonder if you even know what the word means.
I struggled to finish it because of the reasons I gave. It was jumbled. It felt belabored and messy. It was sloppy in its execution. That doesn't mean that I didn't comprehend it. That's your own pretentious assumption, obviously.
FroLogic 3 years ago
Not to mention that you haven't succeeded in countering a single point that I've brought up. Instead you try to make the argument about me as a reader. Which I will not let you do.
FYI: You used the expression "Preaching to the CHOIR" incorrectly. An expression implies that two people agree, which we clearly do not. Not only that but your arguing points that I didn't even make.
Clearly I'm going over your head, so I'll leave it at that. Have a nice day. ;)
FroLogic 3 years ago
Actually I loved Gardens of the Moon and followed it quite well, which goes to say a lot about your ability to read and comprehend really good writing, Its quite obvious it was to complicated for you.
And because of that you are missing out on a very good series with a story that would easily rival that of Martins or Tolkiens books. Its just unfortunate you dont have the intellect to understand any of this, I do feel bad for you.
refuckulate420 3 years ago

If you were aware of the situation at all then you could find online in many places that the majority agrees, sorry.
refuckulate420 3 years ago
You've stated this already, and I've already posted my reply to this statement i my previous posts.
"If you were aware of the situation at all then you could find online in many places that the majority agrees, sorry. "
This phrase doesn't even mean anything. First I'm aware of the situation, and "The Majority" is an inferred claim.
It's all relative, as I've previously expressed.
FroLogic 3 years ago
Further yet, The majority of people are pissed off about this delay with no response, otherwise Mr.Martin would not have posted the response he did in regards to this on his website. Now I am allowed to be pissed off about this, and so are all the other people out there who are. Its not hard to give a simple update about something if you are making progress.
refuckulate420 3 years ago
You can be pissed off all you want, but you have no right to make demands about anything information about his product he's giving away for free.
And speaking on LOTR, do you know how long it took Tolkien to write those books? 12 years. That's 4 years per book. [even though they're really only one book] Some people simply work slower than others, and the Martin have been spoiled with his constant updates and tidbits. Getting pissed off, and raging at the author is very immature.
FroLogic 3 years ago

ValAktaion 3 years ago 5
You must remember that as a story progresses the author needs to give more and more thought to how he is going to wrap things up in upcoming books. On a more hopeful side, maybe hes half done the rest of the series and tying everything together at once. Keep your fingers crossed. I, for one, will await patiently, as I know great works take time especially under immense pressure.
Nickodemusodurn 3 years ago
(2/3)
With Game dating back to 95/96 (the release!!!), it has taken Martin well over 14 years to get about 60% of the story complete. Given his tendency to put more time in every upcoming book than he did in the previous one, he will be writing on the remaining 40% for another 14 years.
Let's not forget that when he released Feast, he also declared that Dance was already more than halfway done... the other half of Dance took him 3 years!?!
ValAktaion 3 years ago 2
the thing is we don't know how much of books 5-7 he has actually written, if he had half of dance written when he released feast, then maybe he has half of the next book done when dance is released, maybe he has completed some storylines and is simply having problems with certain other storylines, he could actually have the series nearly finished, we really dont know anything
ryto12 3 years ago
On the first day of this year Martin announced that the release of Dance was scheduled for the late summer/eary winter. Imagine the blow he would have delivered when he told straight away that he would not have it done before 2009. That's what it all comes down to: another year.

The book doesn't have a release date yet and as far as i know neither does the tv series.

"Tell me Lord Snow", said Lady Melisandre, "Where were these other kings when the wild people stormed your Wall?"
Awesome :D

Great author... but i was expecting a better reading. He sounds like an average joe who picks up a book and reads it out loud - which he is. I was just expecting something more like an audiobook type read.

This is a great series! He has a pretty good reading voice as well. Thanks for putting up this video!

Weakest? I wouldn't say so, just a bit different this time. :) I saw "A Feast For Crows" as a bit of a tense 'rest period' before an even darker gathering storm hits Westeros. :) I'm looking forward to the rest of the series all the more now. :)

Feast of Crows was his weakest yet. Too bad he cannot organize his writing to fit into separate books better.
