I watched this video purely for the Wackermania, and I was not let down. Very interesting to see him play outside of the Zappa context. What a versatile musician... Zappa, Holdsworth, James Taylor, Barbara Streisand (??!?). He's an outstanding example of superlative musicianship.
Chad Wackerman is a world class drummer now, can literally play with anyone. He's an example of the clean-cut kid who did his homework, avoided the drugs and bimbos and just kept working.
I remember that big hair that Dave's rockin' from back in the day! For those of you not old enough to remember (Koz is just a couple of years younger than me), that look was the shit for men -- really hot! Looking back now -- not so much (lol). Dave was a lot edgier back then (what the hell has happened to him???), but then again playing with Jeff brought the best out of a musician.
@msguidobiatch You're right about the commercialism. Same thing happened to Kenny G who started his career with Jeff Lorber (Jeff Lorber Fusion) waaaaay back in the day. IMHO, Kenny and Koz both left their best work with Lorber's band. All that being said, I do have a ticket to see Koz' show when he swings through my city in early August (lol). Actually, it'll be my first time seeing him live. I hope he doesn't disappoint and delivers, as I'd really like to change my opinion about him. :-)
Dave Koz's style reminds me of Kenny G back in the day. Both once apart of Lorber's band, both have gone very soft. It's uncommon to hear an alto sax played hard like a tenor.
Koz screwed up and threw off Wackermans drum solo/sax interchange, coming in too soon in the progression....They still forged ahead though, as we musicians do in the heat of OOPS!
My God what's with the post 80's hair? I wish I could have seen Jeff Lorber live more often, He really put on a great show back in the day!! (he still does but something back then was really special)
Hey dude, I was trying to send you a "Share" on one of these videos. I see you already know about them. Cool. Dave Koz and Jeff Lorber sound amazing, don't they?? God bless.
