In the stimulus theres $198 million to compensate Filipino World War II veterans for their service. Most dont live in the United States. I'm sure that the few left will end up millionaires with that much money to split among them.

In addition, Obama's complaints about "inheriting this" are ridiculous. As I recall, Obama wasn't drafted into the Presidency; he asked for the job. If he's upset over what he "inherited," he can step aside and let Biden handle it. Plus, Obama didn't inherit this problem from the people, the people inherited it from the government.
Also, Obama gave the GOP a BIG opening w/his comment about spending = stimulus. What???? Wasteful/foolish spending - by the government, primarily - is what got us into this! The GOP needs to pounce on Obama's comments as evidence that the bill is a return to Carter-era philosophy; big government and over-spending. The GOP needs to become the party of deficit reduction and lower spending. Keep the message simple and clear.
It takes money to make money. Cutting taxes is not going to stop us from steam rolling towards a recession. People would just take that extra cash from tax cuts and save it. You people KNOW this will work, but are looking for any reason to bash Obama.
I also think it will take more than just cutting taxes but massive government spending isn't the way to go. Frankly, the bill has reminded the GOP of what they're supposed to stand for - smaller gov't, lower taxes (they forgot that during the Bush years). So, the bill is not just an opportunity to obstruct Obama; it truly represents something the GOP should idealogically oppose.
You have to spend money to make money. Just because I get a bigger refund check at tax time doesn't mean I am going to higher people. That is a flip of a coin ideal, and we dont have time to take chances. Half-a million people losing their jobs everyday, and you people are crying about the size of the government. Must be all you rich folks that dont worry about keeping the lights on or eating.
I am not rich but I'd like to be someday. I also know that the gov't can do more harm than good, economically speaking. The gov't cannot end a recession/depression. Look at FDR's New Deal; he had a totally willing leg. branch and the public behind him but none of what he did produced "stimulus." The country sank deeper into recession partly b/c they kept expecting a magical govertmental solution that wasn't coming. Based on history, free enterprise will come through in the long run.
You might want to read the Nobel Prize winning economist , Paul Krugman, on this. Actually, the New Deal did work. It was slowed down when FDR started listening to conservatives and watered down the programs. By the way, how many WPA projects in our infrastructure (Hoover dam anyone?) do we still get an economic benefit from 70 years later? Or we could just piss it away in another useless war, I guess.

Actually, Bush cut taxes by 4% in 2006, and the economy has been nosediving ever since. We are too deep to give people bigger tax refunds and cross our fingers and hope that they hire people. That may have worked 1-2 years ago, but it is too late now.
It's been nose diving, because there was no spending cuts with the tax cuts. It is the over spending with no increase in production that is the problem. Tax cuts alone will not stimulate. Spending on waste and pork wont either. That is the problem with this bill.
48% of the Stimulus Bill IS tax Cuts, and 52% is spending. What the hell are you talking about? It is about as balanced as it will get. Most of the spending is a couple million dollars here and there.
Have you bothered to read any part of this bill? The key to spending in a recession is to spend to encourage production. Spending just to spend and line the pockets of various voter blocks will not stimulate anyting. There is LITTLE in this bill to stimulate PRODUCTION. It only stimulates government employees, and those who sit on their ass to continue to sit on their ass. Please, tell us how frisbee parks, bee insurance, STD prevention and other pet pork projects increase production?

the only thing bush did wrong was he had way to much govt. intervention in the economy. the amount of govt. spending for these projects was huge and put us into a budget deficit for over half of his presidency. but govt, intervention is a liberal view. i want someone to succeed, and if it's obama, so be it. but he's not going to with these policies. this type of stimulus has been attempted before and it didn't work. it was the liberals that put us into this situation, and now it's worse.

there's a difference between a budget surplus, and our national deficit. the budget surplus is spending less than what we planned for. which clinton did, but he also created a faltering economy. bush had a budget deficit, which means we spent more than what we planned for. but we've always had a federal deficit.

Keynesian economics didn't work in Japan's lost decade, so I'm skepticle of it working. Temporary tax cuts alone won't do anything. Tax cuts need to be real and permanent.
The US economy is doomed to failed regardless of a stimulus. Exponential growth just isn't possible. Check it out on wikopedia. Economic collapse should happen around 2040. Now it may happen sooner.

This so-called Stimulus Bill won't stimulate ANY new jobs. SPENDING More doesn't fix a deficit. How many of you, if you don't have the money to make your house payment or your car note would recommend going on a wild spending flurry?? How long before you would literally be on the street or out of transportation?? So why would it EVER make any sense to anyone to spend, spend, spend when we are fiscally in desperate straits????? In the stimulus theres $198 million to compensate Filipino World War II veterans for their service. Most dont live in the United States. I'm sure that the few left will end up millionaires with that much money to split among them.
What about the vietnam veterans and other Us veterans? And, there is no money in the stimulus for the US Mexican border fence. Now, tell me who Obama is catering to? The answer, "Not the American people."

It doesn't matter who started this mess. It is his job to fix this mess. Obama ran for presidency on his own free will, and now the economy is his responsibility. This whole stimulus is a joke. Obama said that Congress must be 'urgent' in passing the bill, and that if they're too late, the economy may suffer 'irreversible damage'. Most of the spending in this bill won't start until 2011 and 2012. And so far no recession has been irreversible.

$1.6 trillion to bailout wallstreet & state govs mean that each of your families (~4 people) will fork out 20K. When was the last time the gov gave you 20K in tough times?

Even Obama says it won't stimulate the economy. he even says it may take along time. Talk about covering his ass. Everyone says the market will fix it's self. As if that being true, his plan will only hurt it or take it longer. he can't make companies hire people back. His plan isn't going to do one thing to help the economy. All the other problem in the country and he thinks he can stimulate the economy and he can't even hire anyone that isn't behind on their own taxs.

Well j0hnwi11iams I have downloaded the HR-1 Bill and printed it. There is nothing in it that will stimulate one job for any of the millions layed off. There is no highway plans in it, no plans to build bridges in it. There is many studies in it. Anywhere from 100's of millions to billions in studies. one being the study of RFID chips to being embeded into everyone in the US. Are you one of the ones waiting in line to get yours?

If you think that the Democratic Party can allocate scarce rescources more efficiently than a free market (which we haven't had for a long time), your dream will turn into a nightmare. The best way to stimulate the economy is to cut back on taxes. Do you wonder why US corporations became multi-national? It's because our country has the 2nd highest corporate tax rate in the world! In addition, Obama's complaints about "inheriting this" are ridiculous. As I recall, Obama wasn't drafted into the Presidency; he asked for the job. If he's upset over what he "inherited," he can step aside and let Biden handle it. Plus, Obama didn't inherit this problem from the people, the people inherited it from the government.

Also, Obama gave the GOP a BIG opening w/his comment about spending = stimulus. What???? Wasteful/foolish spending - by the government, primarily - is what got us into this! The GOP needs to pounce on Obama's comments as evidence that the bill is a return to Carter-era philosophy; big government and over-spending. The GOP needs to become the party of deficit reduction and lower spending. Keep the message simple and clear.

I also think it will take more than just cutting taxes but massive government spending isn't the way to go. Frankly, the bill has reminded the GOP of what they're supposed to stand for - smaller gov't, lower taxes (they forgot that during the Bush years). So, the bill is not just an opportunity to obstruct Obama; it truly represents something the GOP should idealogically oppose.

You have to spend money to make money. Just because I get a bigger refund check at tax time doesn't mean I am going to higher people. I am not rich but I'd like to be someday. I also know that the gov't can do more harm than good, economically speaking. The gov't cannot end a recession/depression. Look at FDR's New Deal; he had a totally willing leg. branch and the public behind him but none of what he did produced "stimulus." The country sank deeper into recession partly b/c they kept expecting a magical govertmental solution that wasn't coming. Based on history, free enterprise will come through in the long run.

You might want to read the Nobel Prize winning economist , Paul Krugman, on this. Actually, the New Deal did work. It was slowed down when FDR started listening to conservatives and watered down the programs. By the way, how many WPA projects in our infrastructure (Hoover dam anyone?) do we still get an economic benefit from 70 years later? Or we could just piss it away in another useless war, I guess.

Actually, Bush cut taxes by 4% in 2006, and the economy has been nosediving ever since. We are too deep to give people bigger tax refunds and cross our fingers and hope that they hire people. That may have worked 1-2 years ago, but it is too late now.

It's been nose diving, because there was no spending cuts with the tax cuts. It is the over spending with no increase in production that is the problem. Tax cuts alone will not stimulate. Spending on waste and pork wont either. That is the problem with this bill.

Have you bothered to read any part of this bill? The key to spending in a recession is to spend to encourage production. Spending just to spend and line the pockets of various voter blocks will not stimulate anyting. There is LITTLE in this bill to stimulate PRODUCTION. It only stimulates government employees, and those who sit on their ass to continue to sit on their ass. Please, tell us how frisbee parks, bee insurance, STD prevention and other pet pork projects increase production?
