Yeah, theres something about this scene. You really get that they aren't fighting to put on a show for you, but to kill each other. Its tangible danger that comes across, the sense that somebodys really going to die at any moment.
tim roth's character was a better swordsman... or fenceman.. if that is a word. Rob Roy was a warrior. Tim Roth's character was a tactician but also a cocky fuck. Wore down Rob Roy, then Rob Roy beat him with both tact and strength. Wasn't it obvious?
Other than Cunningham being 'shocked' by the blade grab and unable to react in time, I don't see why else he couldn't pull his sword away or even stab straight into Roy's chest. I don't see how Roy can possibly have a solid grip on Cunningham's blade.
What did they tell you? That everybody is happy to have an American puddle in the EU? It was a big mistake on part of the French by not upholding the veto against the British membership.
That's the political side. Culturally England is part of Europe. Like it or not.
Ummm I find that offensive. The Scots had more right to THEIR land then the English, so in defending their land a few English had to die. Their not smelly, their a poud people who fought and died for their freedom. So don't go calling them smelly, you don't know what you are talking about.
I didn't mean it that way. I have nothing against the Scottish people. Besides I didn't call them smelly. Only that particular Scot (fictional on top of that). Peace.
please everyone knows bi-sexual rapists of women and buggers of boys arent supposed to win sword fights, especially when they're facing a Mountain fresh Scotsman. :-)
I'll assume you're talking about when he pulls the "medallion"/locklet off his neck when he's dead.
I'm not sure what you are talking about, but I always thought it was a portait of his maid/servant/whatever that he impregnated. I could be wrong though.
I mean the locket, which is not in the scene you show, but about 30 seconds after. Yes, after Archy is dead, the Marquis of Montrose seems to be interested in the memory of the picture in the locket. Most likely Archy is his illegetimate child.
While I'm glad the Englishman died, I'm tired of this type of ending. Roy should have been killed. This reminds me of those James Bond films where the bad guy has Bond dead to rites but has to brag or make some last comment. Any sane person would have immediately killed him, but not these egomaniacs. Same here.
Roy 'should have been killed'. Typical for frogs like you. If Roy had wanted to be a sniveling twit he could have not pulled all the honor crap. If Roy had been killed that way in history at that part, nobody would have bothered making a movie about it.
Genius, I'm not French. Also, there was no Cunningham. He was made up. Just like the duel was made up and just like the way this fantasy duel ended was made up. It would have been more realistic to have Roy actually beat Cunningham outright than to have Cunningham acting so superior to Roy. Any other person in real life would have killed Roy outright.
Roy, in REAL LIFE, went to prison. He never fought this duel to reclaim his honor and cancel his debt.
I didn't intend to disagree with you, and maybe mistated, I meant what you said better. First part I was saying in my way "THIS IS A MOVIE" second part I was saying If he was killed the way the guy suggested he should be, what would be the point of making a movie about it. It is just a loosely based movie, and liam neeson is a good sword fighter in real life, that's all there is to it.
Then I apologize. It's not me to be rude with people I don't know. I must have misunderstood your original post. I saw it & my emotions got the better of me especially when I felt I didn't say anything intentionally offensive about a poster, the actors or the movie. It's a brilliant movie. I'm glad Rob Roy won the duel but since it's a drama that's supposed to appear realistic, the way Roy won made me have to suspend belief to believe it. Maybe some guys really do that & win. I don't know.
I love the ending for a very simple reason. Pricks like Archibald Cunningham always get beaten because they underestimate the will of people who fight for a noble cause.
first of all he was a bastard and a prick and not a fag, second of all you go choke on a bible or any other fairytales from ancient desert nomads you believe have any value today
The way Rob was able to hold the sword was not with the skin of his hands.Notice how when he grabs the sword his hand starts to bleed profusely.Thats because it was all the way to the bone. His hand bones were what was gripping the sword. He was so eager to kill Archibald that the pain of holding that sword didn't matter! Thats my thought on it.
I think every one getting into the technical of if he can grab the sword or not is missing the point. The whole point was here is a evil prick dude that raped your wife, has tried to kill you. burned your house and caused you all kinds of trouble. And all you have left is to fight him and you realize he is seven grades better then you in sword fighting, playing with you and not even breaking a sweat an you are probably going to die...it builds the movie
One thing I notice about this scene that bugs me dearly is after Neeson slices Roth nearly in half. You how to ask youself how and the hell would Roth(Cummingham) be able the move his left arm after that?
Neeson's acting in this scene is amazing. The looks of desperation and fear on his face as he realizes there's no way he can fairly beat this evil twerp are perfect.
Moral of the story is, unless you are Ray Park or Daniel Day Lewis, don't go near Liam Neeson when he has a sword! The traditional scottish baskethilt claymore is really sweet too, same sword that killed Blackbeard.
The rapier was a narrow, springy blade with a heavy rib and steep bevels, like a steel whip.
In theory, seizing this type of blade and bending it would cause the edge to bite into one's palm and bind, especially if a large and desperate man was holding it. As they said of the rapier, "Cut with the edge, Kill with the point."
Of course, having the director on your side helps, too...
This is by far the most realistic sword fight ever in movie history. I mean, we see Rob Roy tiring as the fight slowly exhausts him. Corny as it sounds, but I felt I was back in time and really watching a real duel to the death.
The only reason I ever came across this movie was the review given by Siskel and Ebert. They both gave exceptionally glowing reviews, especially concerning this scene. I gave it a shot and loved it. I think it's too bad this got lost in the shuffle as "Braveheart" came out the same year. Apparently too many stories about Scottish guys caused this to lose out against Mel Gibson's film.
wrong. roth's character was very confused when he grabbed his sword. he tried to pull the sword back but liam was too strong. roth didn't have enough time to analyze and understand the situation. In roth's mind, liam grabbing his sword wasn't a possibility, he was completely thrown off.
I think Roth was masterful, poised & in control, like a cat toying with a mouse. Further we've seen how much quicker his sword could come into play than Liam's. Thirdly, his sword was razor-sharp, so Liam's brute strenth wouldn't have been enough to keep grasping it...Bye!
Swords are thicker than razors. But the point I was really trying to make is that Roth's character was completely thrown off by the grabing of the sword.
Don't listen to that other guy. Grabbing swords was a common strategy. It's just he never saw it coming...probably cuz roy had more experience in real fighting, archie in fencing class...this isn't just my opinion. Read "By the Sword" by R. Cohen...it gets into grabbing swords, which was standard...trinisexwhatever just needs to read more, talk less.
What do you mean "arguably" the greatest sword fighting scene on screen? As a girl I hate violence on film but this is the best fight I've ever witnessed!! Very smart.
I said "arguably the greatest dramatic sword fight scene..."
There are "better" sword fight scenes in cinema due to CGI, wires and and whatnot. But this scene(IMHO), IS the best period, if you have the backdrop of why they are fighting in the first place. The choreography of this scene is amazing and the dramatic tension of knowing(by watching the movie) that Liam's character has no chance against Roth's character in a dual, sets this scene up to perfection.
Without doubt one of "the" most brilliant revenge and good vs evil Flicks of all time.
